The Complete BBarclayarclay Crocker Audio Tape Guide By David Winter Version of 26 NOVEMBER 2015 This list contains all known Barclay Crocker tapes released between 1977 and 1986. Any new version will contain minor fixes or updates, or unreleased titles. If you wish to contribute, please email me at [email protected] with good quality pictures showing what should be updated or added. Thank you. Change log: Titles known under two catalog numbers have their references combined to avoid duplicate lines. Fixed date code format (day/month were swapped). Minor updates in titles / performers on a few titles. Tape not in the list published by BC in 1986 before closing, and not extremely rare for such. NR : Never Released (production samples may exist). Sonic Sentry: Sonic Sentry is a special signal recorded on tapes with Side 1 shorter than Side 2. To locate the beginning of Side 1, the tape must be played in high speed mode. Some decks use a « cue » system allowing to bring the tape closer to the playback head. Others need to be put in edit mode. When heard, Sonic Sentry sounds like alternating beeps. Note that early BC tapes produced in the 1970s did not yet feature Sonic Sentry. Tapes featuring Sonic Sentry have a small icon printed on the right of the label and come with a notice explaining how it works. Quality Control (QC) code format and how to date your tapes: All Barclay Crocker reels have a control label on Side 2. Earlier labels have a blue contour, later ones are white and also contain the operator’s initials after the code. The format is SYMMDD where: S = Slave recorder (1 digit; only five copies were made simultaneously) Y = Year (7 and 8 stand for 1977 and 1978 respectively, 0-6 stand for 1980-86) MM, DD = Month and Day (2 digits each) II = Operator initials where RF = Rich Fill, WC = William Cunningham, WC = Wayne Chin, EH = Erich Hissel, EM = unknown (so far) , and sometimes HB = Henry Barclay. Lubricant loss problem on Barclay Crocker reels (and how to play them when still possible): Reels produced in 1977/78 happen to suffer from lubricant loss and the well known sticky shed syndrome. In most cases, the tape will squeak on the tape guides of your recorder due to the uneven and very slightly sticky tape surface. It is possible that a tape squeaks on one side but not the other due to different tape tension. Bad tapes can increase head wear and generate highly audible distortion. In some cases, the tape can still be played by reducing the tape tension. For example, disconnecting the supply reel motor on a Revox may allow the tape to play fine, although a quality transfer is recommended. If your tape is stuck, try playing it without head contact. Although the tape will have become more abrasive and prone to head wear, it is still possible to transfer it. In any case, it is not recommended to play defect Barclay Crocker tapes regularly. Labels known to suffer from these problems are MHS, VAN and UNC. Remember: such tapes have the second digit of their Quality Control code equal 7 or 8. Other wordings: / between orchestra and conductor means "conducted by". #: #1 stands for "number 1", #1-4 stands for number 1 to number 4. Credits: Thanks go to all eBay sellers for their clear tape pictures and descriptions without which many titles would remain incomplete: changesbowie, livelyauctions, luchretia123, o-jayne, polyphonyclassics and reelshiny. Thanks also to those who sold LPs also released by BC, without whom I would have never been able to fix many entries. I would also like to thank David Mansell who provided additional pictures and David L. Schwartz who provided detailed information on rarely seen tapes.
