La rubrica Ricerche si apre con due saggi dedicati alla scrittrice e poetessa italiana Anna Maria Ortese. Il primo, di Arianna Ceschin, analizza la pratica letteraria innovativa di alcuni suoi scritti, una pratica capace di combinare tratti tipici dello stile narrativo con il gusto del visivo tipico del giorna- lismo. Il secondo saggio, di Alessandra Trevisan, indaga il legame intellettuale e fraterno tra Anna Maria Ortese e Beppe Costa, fondatore della Pellicanolibri, casa editrice e grande progetto culturale che vide coinvolta anche la scrittrice italiana. Il saggio è arricchito da un’intervista a Beppe Costa e da alcune lettere inedite di An- na Maria Ortese. Anche il saggio che segue tocca un tema nuovo per la rivista. Veronica Stefani ripercorre un decennio di attività di Femen – il movimento transnazionale femmi- nista emerso con la rivoluzione arancione in Ucraina –, ne discute punti di forza e di debolezza e si interroga sull’efficacia dell’uso della nudità come mezzo di rivo- luzione sessuale. L’ultimo saggio raccolto nella rubrica traccia un profilo biografi- co dell’attivista per i diritti civili degli afroamericani Ella Baker, figura recente- mente rivalutata dalla storiografia femminista nera, soffermandosi in particolare sulla sua etica organizzativa basata sui valori del mutualismo e della democrazia diretta. Nella rubrica Documenti il numero riprende temi già affrontati, li amplia e li approfondisce. Anna Scandolin presenta e suddivide per temi una vera e propria raccolta di articoli di Ruth First – l’attivista e sociologa sudafricana a cui DEP ha dedicato un numero speciale (n. 26, 2014) – apparsi tra il 1957 e il 1953 su varie testate e conservati prevalentemente nell’archivio Ruth First Papers presso l’ Institute of Commonwealth Studies a Londra. A conclusione del centenario della Grande guerra, inoltre, la rubrica ritorna sul tema del pacifismo femminista presentando in traduzione italiana alcune poesie e un dramma della poetessa britannica Margaret Sackville, l’articolo La musica di Natale di Bach in Inghilterra e in Germania della scrittrice cosmopolita Vernon Lee e, della stessa, la prima parte dell’opera Satana il distruttore la cui parte cen- trale, il Balletto delle nazioni , è già apparsa nel n. 31 del 2017. Il tema delle donne che lottarono a fianco di Gandhi – oggetto del numero mo- nografico n. 37 del 2018 – è qui ripreso nell’intervista a Radha Bhatt, attivista im- pegnata da anni nella diffusione del Programma costruttivo di Gandhi. Infine, in questo numero che, come di consueto, si pubblica nell’imminenza del Giorno della Memoria, due contributi di Sara Valentina Di Palma si soffermano sul © DEP ISSN 1824 - 4483 destino dell’infanzia nella Shoah. Nella rubrica Donne umanitarie la studiosa trac- cia un profilo di Matilde Cassin concentrandosi sull’aiuto ai bambini ebrei, mentre nell’intervento incluso nella rubrica Recensioni , Interventi, resoconti , attraverso i frammenti di alcune esperienze infantili, presenta le difficoltà di ricostruire l’identità e il vissuto dei bambini assassinati nella Shoah, una sfida e un dovere per la storiografia. *** This miscellaneous issue of DEP returns to themes the journal has already dealt with as well as introducing new ones. The Ricerche section opens with two essays dedicated to the Italian poet and writer Anna Maria Ortese. The first, by Arianna Ceschin, analyses the innovative literary practice of some of Ortese’s writings, which combines typical aspects of her narrative style with her journalistic love for the visual. The second essay, by Alessandra Trevisan, explores the intellectual and fraternal bond between Anna Maria Ortese and Beppe Costa, the founder of Pelli- canolibri, a publishing house and noteworthy cultural project to which Ortese con- tributed. The piece is accompanied by an interview with Beppe Costa and by some unpublished letters by Anna Maria Ortese. The following essay also introduces a new theme for the journal. Veronica Ste- fani reports on a decade of activity carried out by Femen – the transnational femi- nist movement that grew from the Orange Revolution in Ukraine – discussing its strengths and weaknesses, and exploring the effectiveness of nudity as a means of sexual revolution. The last essay in this section provides a biography of the Afri- can-American civil rights activist Ella Baker, who has recently been reconsidered by Black feminist historiography. She focuses in particular on Baker’s organisa- tional ethics based on values of mutualism and direct democracy. The Documenti section expands and elaborates on themes already dealt with in past issues. Anna Scandolin introduces a collection of articles by Ruth First, the South African activist and sociologist to whom DEP dedicated a Special Issue in 2014 (n. 26). These articles were published in different newspapers between 1957 and 1953, and are mainly conserved in the Ruth First Papers archive at the Insti- tute of Commonwealth Studies in London. At the end of the centenary of the Great War, Documenti returns to the theme of feminist pacifism with the Italian translation of some poems and a play by the Brit- ish poet Margaret Sackville, Vernon Lee’s article Bach’s Christmas Music in Eng- land and in Germany (La musica di Natale di Bach in Inghilterra e in Germania ) and the first part of Satan, the waster (Satana il distruttore ) the central part of which, The Ballet of the Nations (Balletto delle nazioni ), was published in 2017 (n. 31). The theme of the women who worked alongside Gandhi – dealt with in the monographic issue n. 37 in 2018 – is taken up again in an interview with Radha Bhatt, an activist who has been involved in propagation of Gandhi’s Constructive Program. Finally, this issue that appears each year close to Holocaust Memorial Day pub- lishes two articles by Sara Valentina Di Palma that explore childhood in the Shoah. In the Donne umanitarie section, she provides a biography of Matilde Cassin, fo- 2 cusing on her aid for Jewish children, while in the Recensioni , Interventi, resoconti section she explores the difficulties in reconstructing the identity and experience of the children killed in the Shoah through some fragments of childhood memories, both a challenge and a duty for historiography. 3 “Sento che occorre un mutamento nel paesaggio”: viaggio nel giornalismo degli anni cinquanta di Anna Maria Ortese di Arianna Ceschin* Abstrac t: Anna Maria Ortese’s work demonstrates the existence of a link between literature and journalism. In the 1950s, her Il mare non bagna Napoli and Silenzio a Milano can be con- sidered as an example of innovative literary practice capable of combining unique features of her narrative style with a visual style, typical of journalism. La prosa giornalistica di Anna Maria Ortese, una “palestra di scrittura” alla ricerca della realtà La pagina narrativa non fu l’unico spazio dove Anna Maria Ortese, eclettica firma della letteratura italiana novecentesca, seppe offrire una lezione in fatto di originalità stilistica e schiettezza di contenuti. Una realtà riportata con piglio sincero dalla penna ortesiana riaffiora anche e soprattutto tra le pagine dei periodici. Risulta cospicuo il numero di collaborazioni presso diversi giornali, testimoniato dall’intensa biografia dell’autrice.

Quite simply, their lives too closely resembled the status quo antebellum. Indeed, African Americans remained landless, lacked ownership of the fruits of their labor, lost the vote (through elec- toral fraud and discriminatory changes to state constitutions) shortly after they had received it, and were subject to vicious, vulgar, and random acts of racial terrorism as a result of the federal government being more interested in protecting the southern economy than in protecting black folk. In response, African Americans organized to implement their vision of freedom, which differed substantially from that of white southerners and white northerners. By agitating for their civil and human rights, especially for good-quality education, political participation, personal safety, and control of their own labor, the former slaves launched the fight for racial justice that continues to this day (Harding 1981). The most important link in this intergenerational struggle is the modern Civil Rights Movement. It represents the most highly organized manifestation of African Americans’ post-emancipation search for a new freedom and, if measured narrowly in legislative terms, the most successful. Popular interest in the Civil Rights Movement has swelled during the last two decades. Evidence of this trend is the surge in the number of feature-length films that explore aspects and events of the civil rights era, such as Freedom Song and Boycott.

    Resistance, Social Change, and the Environment Introduction Environment is one of the key sites of global social change, with environ- mental activist groups seeking to draw attention to the effects of specific practices on the environment, and subsequently seeking to impact policy making and practices that shape the environment (Castells, 1996, 1997, 1998; della Porta & Diani, 2006; Rootes, 2004; Sklair, 1995). In our discus- sion of the politics of resistance in this chapter, we will specifically focus on global social change movements that emphasize local participation and processes of change, situated amidst the broader backdrop of claims making and presentation of arguments that seek to impact the realms of policy making and programming. Drawing upon examples from the global North as well as from the South, we will particularly examine the ways in which social change processes are constituted amidst policy frameworks and articulations across various global spaces.     1 Report of the activities of the Gandhi Study Circle (July 2017-April 2018) 21 September 2017 In collaboration with Loktantrashala, School for Democracy, the Gandhi Study Circle organized a lecture by P.V. Rajagopal of Ekta Parishad on “Mahatma Gandhi and the Theory of Non-Violence”. P. V. Rajagopal spoke on the significance of training in the methods of non-violence all across the world and of the use of the padayatra as active non-violence. 2 9 October 2017 The month long Gandhi Jayanti celebrations coincided with the inauguration of the Kalavati Gupta Hostel. This event was marked by: a welcome song by the Equal Opportunities Cell; a bhajan by Vasundhara Raturi of B.A. (Hons) Music; the hymn “Abide with Me” by the Western Music Society; and the Ram Dhun by Alaap. Nivedita Tuli spoke on “Indraprastha College’s Gandhian Connection”, and drew attention to different aspects such as the charkha society of the college that began in 1943 under the aegis of the Social Service League, and functioned till 1948. 3 13 October 2017 In collaboration with Loktantrashala, School for Democracy, the Gandhi Study Circle organized a lecture on “Gandhi in the Contemporary World” by Rajni Bakshi.
