MTV’S NEWS & DOCUMENTARIES DEPARTMENT PRESENTS TRUE LIFE: I’m in an Interfaith Relationship Relationships can be tough but, what happens when the person you love doesn’t share the same faith as you do? Can the differences ever be put aside? With over 4,000 known religions in the world, from traditional faith to new age beliefs, interfaith relationships are very common. For some people faith and religion is instilled from a very early age and usually lasts a lifetime. For others, faith is found later in life. Either way, there is not much that will make these individuals change or compromise their religion and faith…not even meeting the love of their life. Are you currently dating someone who doesn’t share the same religious background as you? Do your family and friends not understand? If you appear between the ages of 18-28 and you want to share the challenges and benefits of being in an interfaith relationship, we want to hear from you. Please email your contact info, recent pictures of you and your loved one, and explanation of your current relationship to [email protected]. True Life wants to experience your interfaith relationship from your point of view. 13EXODUS: CONTO E RECONTOS Long walks, incredible journeys: popular fantasies of escape and returning home Caminhadas longas, jornadas incríveis: fantasias populares de fuga e de regresso a casa Anthony Barker University of Aveiro [email protected] Palavras -chave: gulag, fuga, fraude, regresso a casa. Keywords: gulag, escape, fraud, home-coming. When I was 8 years old, I was taken to see a Disney movie called The Incre- dible Journey (1963). It concerns a Canadian family who are given the chance to live and work in England temporarily. In order to do so they have to leave their three pets, two dogs and a cat, in the care of a friend. A mix-up occurs and the animals are lost. What then follows is an immense trek of three pets across the plains and forests of north-west Ontario to be eventually reunited with their now returned owners many months later and nearly 400 kilometers away to the west. Disney began making films of this type (what it called “True-Life Adventures”) in 1953 with the documentary The Living Desert. In 1957, the same film unit swi- tched over to making what it now called, somewhat oxymoronically, “True-Life Fantasies.” The Incredible Journey, based on the 1961 children’s novel of the same name by Sheila Burnford, was the fourth in a sequence of these. To an 8-year-old, the finely-developed homing instincts of cats and dogs were a source of both great delight and perplexity. Even at that age, the story only seemed to have any point, any sense of uplift, if it were true.

Bam cannot tolerate the pain enough to remain perfectly still, so the brand touches him several times, resulting in multiple images that seem blurry or in motion. Bam’s mother, who usually plays the role of game audience for his antics, balks when she learns that her son has been hurt as well as permanently marked. She asks Dunn why anyone would ever burn a friend. “Cause it was funny,” Dunn answers.1 Jackass mines the body in pain as well as the absurd and the taboo, often dealing with one or more of the body’s abject excretions. Jackass offers no compelling narrative arc or cliffhangers, presenting instead a series of discrete segments that explore variations on the singular eponymous focus of the show: playing the fool. This deliberate idiocy is the show’s greatest strength, and its excesses seem calculated to repeatedly provide the viewer with a mix of schadenfreude, horror, and disbelief.
