Capilano 5 Reserve FACTS & STATS 1 Our Community by the Numbers

Last revised: December 2014 Capilano 5 Reserve Introduction

This report provides information on the Capilano 5 Reserve located at the south- eastern boundary of West .

When reporting on demographic data, Statistics provides separate data for First Nations re- serves and municipalities. District of municipal totals in the Facts and Stats series do not include the Capilano 5 Reserve, unless specifically noted.

The District of West Vancouver’s historic municipal boundary includes most of the Capilano 5 First Nations Reserve lands. These lands are owned and governed by the Squamish Nation. West Van- couver’s municipal land use bylaws do not apply. West Vancouver provides services within Capi- lano 5 through agreements with the Squamish Nation. The Squamish Nation leases out some of the Capilano 5 lands to other parties, including Park Royal Towers and the Park Royal Shopping Centre (south side).

This report provides an overview of 2006 census data for Capilano 5 including to- tal land area, population, households, dwellings and income. Comparative West Vancouver munici- pal data (without Capilano 5 included) is provided for reference.

As a result, structures that may have been classified in previous censuses as a single-detached house because there was no outside sign of a second dwelling unit within the building, are more likely to be classified as a duplex in the 2006 and 2011 Census. **includes semi-detached house, apartment duplex, other single attached house. *** In the 2011 Census, the definition for a single-detached house changed to include the following sen- tence: “A mobile home fixed permanently to a foundation is also classified as a single-detached house.” As a result, structures may have been classified in 2006 Census as mobile homes, but classified as single- detached houses in 2011. It can be a different interpretation between two enumerators. They need to de- termine if the dwellings can be moved on short notice or not
