Pachyrhynchus is a genus from subfamily entiminae of which 145 species are known so far. Checklist prepared including it’s synonyms and different subspecies indicate that this genus is predominantly tropical with most of the species known from the Oriental region: Philippines (135 species or 93%), Indonesia (6 species or 4%), Japan (3 species) and Taiwan (1 species and two subspecies). Apo, Mindanao, the Philippines. In contrast to the detailed morphological description based on a large number of museum specimens labelled as “Mt. Apo”, the precise distribution of this species in Mt. Apo, which is a large mountain mass with the country’s highest peak, has been unknown to date. In addition, nothing has hitherto been known about its ecology. From October to November, 2015, we conducted field sur- veys for Pachyrhynchini weevils along the following three trails in Mount Apo Natural Park: 1) Mandarangan Trail, Barangay Ilomavis, Kidapawan City, Cotabato, 2) Balutakay Trail, Barangay Managa, Bansalan, Davao del Sur, and 3) Bongolanon Trail, Barangay Bongolanon, Magpet, Cotabato. Geographic overlap is a primary determinant of whether individual predators encounter, and thus learn to avoid, such aposematic prey. We experimentally tested whether the conspicuous colouration displayed by Old World pachyrhynchid weevils (Pachyrhynchus tobafolius and Kashotonus multipunctatus) deters predation by visual predators (Swinhoe’s tree lizard; Agamidae, Japalura swinhonis). During staged encounters, sympatric lizards attacked weevils without conspicuous patterns at higher rates than weevils with intact conspicuous patterns, whereas allopatric lizards attacked weevils with intact patterns at higher rates than sympatric lizards. Sympatric lizards also attacked masked weevils at lower rates, suggesting that other attributes of the weevils (size/shape/smell) also facilitate recognition. Allopatric lizards rapidly learned to avoid weevils after only a single encounter, and maintained aversive behaviours for more than three weeks. The imperfect ability of visual predators to recognize potential prey as unpalatable, both in the presence and absence of the aposematic signal, may help explain how diverse forms of mimicry exploit the predator’s visual system to deter predation.

However, these interactions are not always beneficial for the host; they can also incur costs under certain circumstances. The bacterial symbiont supports, on the one hand, the cuticle formation of the sawtoothed grain beetle Oryzaephilus surinamensis, which is extremely beneficial under dry conditions as a thicker and more melanized cuticle prevents desiccation of the insect. On the other hand, under higher humidity, the benefit is strongly reduced. In this study, we investigated whether harboring a symbiont can also be a disadvantage. Therefore, we first measured the number of symbionts throughout the beetles’ life and found a strong increase during the end of metamorphosis, just before beetles reach adulthood. Afterwards, males lose the symbionts again, whereas females retain a stable number. A comparison of beetles with and without symbionts revealed no differences in many life history traits. Larval development took the same time and there was also no difference in adult mortality or lifespan or the number of offspring of females.

This species group is endemic to Mindanao Island. P. pseudamabilis is very similar to P. amabilis Schultze, 1922, only known from Bukidnon Province (Yoshitake, 2012), being separated from other species in the group by subtle color and endophallus characteristics (Bollino et al. 2018). P. pseudamabilis was previously only known from Mt. Apo, North Cotabato. Since the description of P. pseudamabilis, no additional distribution records for the species have been documented. Here we present new data on the distribution and ecology of P. pseudamabilis, made during recent expeditions conducted by the Coleoptera Research Center in Mindanao and examination of materials in Daugavpils University, Institute of Life Sciences and Technology, Coleopterological Research Center (DUBC) in Latvia.
