Roosevelt’s presidency. It is largely an industrial analysis that incorporates legal, political, and social histories in its attempt to investigate the impact of antitrust law on the industry during the Great Depression and World War II. Antitrust law in the U.S. was relatively new when the first round of lawsuits were filed against the Hollywood studios in the 1910s, and it played a key role in the development of the business and economic structure of the industry. This study offers a basis for a more complete understanding of how antitrust shaped the motion picture industry by addressing three areas of historical specificity: first, government-industry relations during the Great Depression; second, antitrust law and its on the structure and behavior of the motion picture industry throughout the decade; and, finally, the reasons behind (1) the Department of Justice issuing a consent decree in ii the middle of the United States v. Paramount; (2) the subsequent creation of the Motion Picture Committee Cooperating for National Defense (later renamed the War Activities Committee— Motion Picture Industry); and (3) Hollywood’s substantial efforts to aid the government in its national defense work for the duration of the war. Ultimately, this dissertation argues that the motion picture industry’s close relationship with the Roosevelt administration played a key role in its ability to stave off the commencement of government actions against them until the postwar period. iii The dissertation of Mary Gelsey Samuelson is approved. Through strict licensing policies and creative branding, the husband-and-wife duo led Technicolor in the aesthetic revolution of colorizing Hollywood. However, Technicolor's enormous success, beginning in 1938 with The Wizard of Oz, followed decades of duress on the company. Studios had been reluctant to adopt color due to its high costs and Natalie's commanding presence on set represented a threat to those within the industry who demanded creative license. The discrimination that Natalie faced, while undoubtedly linked to her gender, was more systemically linked to her symbolic representation of Technicolor itself and its transformation of the industry from one based on black-and-white photography to a highly sanctioned world of color photography.

    FOLLOW-UP ASSIGNMENT: FDR AND THE WORLD CRISIS: 1933-1945 SUBMITTED BY PAUL S RYKKEN, BLACK RIVER FALLS, WISCONSIN 26 July 2007 OVERVIEW As part of our concluding discussions at the July seminar, we were asked to create a letter, article, journal entry, briefing, press release, song, or classroom project that reflected a theme or revelation that resulted from our Hyde Park experience. Having taught American history for 28 years I have been “living” with FDR for many years and attempting to interpret him for students in my classes. I found the NEH experience to be incredibly enriching and thought-provoking and certainly am walking away from it with a much deeper appreciation for both Franklin and Eleanor. Of the wide ranging topics that we discussed, I was particularly taken with what we learned about Roosevelt’s fascination with maps and his sense of geography. The presentation by Dr. Alan Henrickson concerning FDR’s “mental maps” was especially instructive in this regard. The lesson plan that follows relates directly to what we learned about FDR as a communicator and global strategist during World War 2. I have often used the Fireside Chats in class (especially his first one) but will certainly add this one to my repertoire next year. The lesson plan is not especially original, but nevertheless offers excellent openings for working on the following skills: • Authentic document analysis • Enhanced understanding of the geography of the war, particularly concerning the early Pacific theater • Analysis of the power of persuasion by the President • Deeper sense of empathy concerning ordinary Americans during World War 2 1 DOCUMENT PROJECT: FDR AND THE WORLD CRISIS LESSON SET-UP In this activity students will be experiencing FDR’s Fireside Chat of February 23, 1942 concerning the progress of the war.
