Once a year, the Friends of Harvard Baseball hosts an informal reception for baseball alumni and friends of the program in NYC. This year was no different than years past in that we had a strong turnout from local alumni, complemented by a few that were able to make the trip from out of town. We spent most of the night catching up with old teammates and trading war stories about indoor dirt mounds, triple headers in Florida and putting Manny Ramirez’s son to bed in the middle of contract negotiations, among other things... Our night was capped off with a “State of the Program” speech given by Coach Decker, where he gave us his 2014 outlook and let us know specifically where the program Left to right: Michael Marcucci ’98, Brian Ralph ’98, Peter Woodfork ’99, Scott Parrot ’96, could use alumni support. Madhu Satyanarayana’03, and Tyler Albright ’11.

It’s an honor to be a part of a group of such athletically and professionally accomplished individuals. Every year when we get together, I’m reminded of how talented and unique a group of alumni we have. It is my sincere hope that we can grow the reception each year to bring more and more alumni together to celebrate our shared experiences playing baseball for Harvard. — Madhu Satyanarayana ’03

Friends of Harvard Track and Field NYC Reception

The Friends of Harvard Track event at the Harvard Club of New York was a great success. The turnout of former track and field athletes was a demonstration of the support for the outstanding program at Harvard. The personal interaction and networking gave me opportunity to meet the coaching staff and make new friends. I am proud to have participated in such an enjoyable event. — Roosevelt Weaver ’71

On February 21, 2014, the Harvard 1989 Men’s NCAA Championship Hockey Team returned to Cambridge for its 25th Reunion. Lane MacDonald ’88-89 captain of the ’89 team, addressed the group which also included wives, offspring and parents. Lane cited the spirit, the cohesiveness, the fun both on and off the ice, and the specific stated goal of the team from the start of the season: winning the national championship. Following Lane’s words of welcome, the entertainment of the night was Mike Vukonich ’91 and Brian Popiel ’90 with their dog and pony show, in a Quiz Game format which created many laughs and classic comebacks. I reiterated that winning the championship was a The 1989 National Champions Harvard Hockey team celebrating on the ice. The win is unforgettable, but what has made me most proud is the careers, the families of the players, and the contributions to society that all have made since their years at Harvard. Thanks to the Varsity Club for coordinating the Reunion. The recent Friends of Harvard Baseball Boston reception was a great way to launch this year’s team into the baseball season. Meeting the players and talking with the coaches about their expectations and strategies for the upcoming season showed their strong dedication and commitment to making this year a success. Hearing the staff’s plans, both immediate and long term, to return to the top of the Ivies gave a real world context to our support of the program and inspired all of us to stay active and relevant to the Friends. Of course the highlight is getting together for a fun night of story swapping and Pinocchio’s eating with multiple generations of baseball alums always to remind us of what is so great about the program and it’s characters. — Tim Burnieika ’91
