OVERVIEW: The Foundation of Rock And Roll During the Great Migration more than 100,000 African-American laborers moved from the agricultural South to the urban North bringing with them their music and memories. Also, during the 1920’s the phonograph and the rise of commercial radio began to spread Hillbilly music and the Blues. This gave rise to an appreciating of American vernacular music, both white and black. Ultimately, the homogenizing effect of blending several regional musical styles and cultural practices gave birth to 1950’s rock and roll. Högskoleexamen SUN STUDIO Inspelningsteknik och sound Författare: Jacob Montén Handledare: Karin Eriksson Examinator: Karin Larsson Eriksson Termin: HT 2019 Ämne: Musikvetenskap Nivå: Högskoleexamen Kurskod: 1MV706 Abstrakt Detta är en uppsats som handlar om Sun Studio under 1950 talet i USA, hur studion kom till och om dess grundare Sam Phillips och de tekniska tillgångarna och begränsningar som skapade ”soundet” för Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ike Turner och många fler. Sam Phillips producerade många tidlösa inspelningar med ljudkaraktäristiska egenskaper som eftertraktas än idag. Med hjälp av litteratur-, ljud- och bildanalys beskriver jag hur musikern och producenten bakom musiken skapade det så kallade ”Sun Soundet”. Ett uppvaknande i musikvärlden för den afroamerikanska musiken hade skett och ingen skulle få hindra Phillips från att göra den hörd. För att besvara mina frågeställningar har texter, tidigare forskning och videomaterial analyserats. Genom den hermeneutiska metoden har intervjumaterial och dokumentärer varit en viktig källa i denna studie. Memphis, Tennessee, Is Known As the Home of The
Memphis, Tennessee, is known as the Home of the Blues for a reason: Hundreds of bluesmen honed their craft in the city, playing music in Handy Park and in the alleyways that branch off Beale Street, plying their trade in that street’s raucous nightclubs and in juke joints across the Mississippi River. Mississippians like Ike Turner, B.B. King, and Howlin’ Wolf all passed through the Bluff City, often pausing to cut a record before migrating northward to a better life. Other musicians stayed in Memphis, bristling at the idea of starting over in unfamiliar cities like Chicago, St. Louis, and Los Angeles. Drummer Finas Newborn was one of the latter – as a bandleader and the father of pianist Phineas and guitarist Calvin Newborn, and as the proprietor of his own musical instrument store on Beale Street, he preferred the familiar environs of Memphis. Finas’ sons literally grew up with musical instruments in their hands. While they were still attending elementary school, the two took first prize at the Palace Theater’s “Amateur Night” show, where Calvin brought down the house singing “Your Mama’s On the Bottom, Papa’s On Top, Sister’s In the Kitchen Hollerin’ ‘When They Gon’ Stop.’” Before Calvin followed his brother Phineas to New York to pursue a jazz career, he interacted with all the major players on Memphis’ blues scene. In fact, B.B. King helped Calvin pick out his first guitar. The favor was repaid when the entire Newborn family backed King on his first recording, “Three O’ Clock Blues,” recorded for the Bullet label at Sam Phillips’ Recording Service in downtown Memphis. -

Buster Williams Biography Buster Williams is a prodigious artist whose playing knows no limits. “That’s All Right” on Memphis Radio, July 1954 Source: Historic-Memphis.com Dewey Phillips was a longtime disc jockey at WHBQ radio in Memphis, Tennessee. Phillips was known for playing music recorded by both black and white and artists. Shortly after Elvis Presley made his first recording, a single whose A-side was the Rhythm and Blues song “That’s All Right,” Phillips became the first disc jockey in the country to play the song on the radio, in July 1954. The account below is taken from the book The Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley, by Peter Guralnick. The response was instantaneous… He played the record seven times in a row, eleven times, seven times over the course of the rest of the program. In retrospect it doesn’t really matter; it seemed as if all of Memphis was listening as Dewey kept up his nonstop patter, egging his radio audience on, encouraging them to join him in the discovery of a new voice… For Gladys [Presley, Elvis’ mother] the biggest shock was “hearing them say his name over the radio just before they put on that record…” She didn’t have time to think about it for long anyway, because almost immediately the phone rang. It was Dewey for Elvis… He said, “Mrs. Presley, you just get that cotton-picking son of yours down here to the station. I played that record of his, and them birdbrain phones haven’t stopped ringing since.”… Within minutes, Elvis was at the station. “I was scared to death,” Elvis said.
