Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.151 - Winter Edition 2018 Annual General Meeting Wednesday, 8 August 2018, 6.30 pm in the Mike Simpson Lounge Shore Road Reserve Formal Notice of the AGM has already been given to members but the Board asks that you please make every effort to attend. In addition to the circulated Agenda: Iain Laxon, CEO of Auckland Cricket, will be attending our AGM and, as he has done so willingly in the past, will update us on Auckland Cricket matters. This is an opportunity for us to ask Iain for more information on the tragic circumstances of Eden Park now not economically viable and likely to be demolished, and explain • why the bureaucratic process is so impossibly difficult that Auckland can only host two International T20s in 2018/19? • how New Zealand, let alone Auckland, will ever again host a World Cup or ODIs against the likes of Australia, India, England and South Africa where sellout crowds have regularly numbered 45,000+ in the recent past? Note the following seating capacities: Western Springs Stadium, Auckland 20,000 (projected) Seddon Park, Hamilton 10,000 Westpac Stadium, Wellington 34,500 Bay Oval, Tauranga 10,000 McLean Park, Napier 19,700 Saxton Oval, Nelson 6,000 Basin Reserve, Wellington 13,000 University Oval, Dunedin 3,500 Note further - Eden Park • 1920s - built by cricketers for cricket, rugby invited to share (and so make economically viable) to provide a stadium so Auckland could host international games of both codes • 1950s – Empire Games held there plus international Hockey and Football games. For rugby tests, crowds slept overnight in the streets outside the ground to gain good vantage points when the gates opened on match day – no residential protests then, only goodwill • 1956 – scene of NZ’s first Cricket Test win and, that winter, Springboks beaten • 1980/90s – first ODIs, the Richard Hadlee/Martin Crowe years, cricket at Eden Park throbbed • 2015-18 Cricket World Cup – 2 sensational ODIs at Eden Park: 1 wicket win over Australia and last ball win over South Africa, Further brilliant ODIs & T20s culminating in the Test win over England in the Day/Night Pink Ball Test. • 2019 – ODIs vs India need to finish 1 hour later in the evening to enable an international TV audience of some 40 million to view the game. Necessity for Resource Consent to be obtained from Auckland Council ruled too difficult/costly so games vs India scheduled elsewhere. Earlier, this year, protesters claiming residential rights had forced the cancellation of a Charity Concert. Protesters number 60 – a poll indicated 91% of Aucklanders favoured the Concert but the minority, led by former PM Helen Clark prevailed. Ms Clark added at the time “Eden Park is a sports centre not a concert venue”. Now, when a small dispensation for cricket is required, sport is halted as well! Iain – we will be most interested in your comments. FROM THE DERBYSHIRE CCC WEB – LOCKIE FERGUSON’S PROFILE Lockie for the Black Caps and on the Derby website and, last season for Parnell vs ECB – a very tentative, young tailender facing! Bat: Right-hand bat Bowling: Right arm fast Birth place: Auckland, New Zealand High score: 41 Best bowling figures: 7-34 Date of Birth: 13/06/1991 (27 years old) Sponsored by: The Energy Check Profile A fearsome quick able to bowl at breakneck speed, Derbyshire has signed New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson for this summer’s Vitality Blast. The colourful seamer brings raw pace as well as an exuberance and desire to take wickets for Derbyshire, following in the footsteps of fellow New Zealand overseas players. Keen to join Specialist Twenty20 Coach and fellow Kiwi, John Wright, Ferguson has been clocked at 95mph and has pace and bounce in abundance. Wright spoke to Ferguson prior to putting pen to paper and was impressed by his desire and hunger to take wickets, a necessary asset for a quick bowler in Twenty20 cricket. The 27-year-old has experience of cricket on the world stage and broke into New Zealand’s ODI side at the end of 2016 after impressing for Auckland. He has featured in 16 ODIs for the Black Caps and taken 21 wickets with best figures of 3-17. His first wicket in the format came against Australia at Sydney, when he hurried the experienced David Warner who chopped on a fierce delivery onto his stumps. His pace impressed overseas and Ferguson was snapped up by Rising Pune Supergiants in the 2017 IPL. After an inauspicious start, the lively quick came back with figures of 2-7 from four overs in a 61-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore. Overall, he has claimed 76 white ball wickets, But he is also an adept first-class bowler having represented his native Auckland since 2013. Born and bred in the city, Ferguson has taken 124 first-class wickets for Auckland and New Zealand, including best figures of 7-34. This will be Ferguson’s first foray into the English domestic game, however he has faced off against a number of the Blast’s biggest local stars, having played England in a One-Day International series in New Zealand in 2017. Amongst Lockie’s team mates at Derbyshire is Harvey Hosein, the wicket keeper, who was in the Denstone College 1st XI coached by Ian Trott a few seasons back. Also, his T20 coach at Derby is John Wright, Tom Talbot’s uncle, the former Black Cap opener and wonderfully successful coach of India back in those Tendulkar/Ganguly/Dravid/Laxman days. In his 10 Vitality Blast T20 games for Derbyshire Falcons, Lockie has taken 14 wickets @ 17.42 and, whilst not opening the bowling has 4 times taken the first 2 wickets to fall and, in one of those, the first 4 wickets. He heads the Derbyshire stats for most wickets and best average. In the Vitality Blast, the top wicket takers are to date: PR Brown Worcestershire 20 @ 12.05 8.31 Econ. Rate Grant Elliott Birmingham 16 @ 15.81 8.16 Ish Sodhi Nottinghamshire 16 @ 17.25 7.88 Imran Tahir Durham 15 @ 13.53 6.34 Lockie Ferguson Derbyshire 14 @ 17.42 6.59 NOTE: THREE NEW ZEALANDERS IN THE TOP 5 WICKET TAKERS & NOTE LOCKIES SUPERB ECONOMY RATE!! NEWCOMERS FOR 2018/19 SEASON Head Coach Ian West reports that “Aniket Parihk and Ollie Pringle will be joining Parnell this coming season . This is great news as David Goddard, Mike Ravlic and Mitch McCann have departed. Also Brenton Thompson a batsman from Tauranga who has played a lot for Bay of Plenty - Dave Goddard is a good friend of his which is the connection. Also Keegan Russell a fast bowler who played Auckland U17 & U19s and performed very well. After U19s he went to the UK to play hockey for a year then was injured on his return so just getting back into cricket - was associated with Takapuna but didn`t really play for them due to school/age group commitments and has now moved over the bridge”.
