Follow the jump for JSA: Savage Times Volume 6 hefty list! After that he started the title Stars and S. Johns is often criticized for having JSA: Savage Times Volume 6 much of a focus on the past, but with such an early involvement with classic legacy characters, I do not see how it could have gone any other way. Besides, at least his writing is usually good. People often forget that Geoff Johns had a issue run on the fourth volume of Hawkman. So, here I am to remind you! One of the things Geoff tried to accomplish while writing the title was to make sense of one of the most convoluted character back- stories in the history of DC comics. Other than the odd shoehorning of Bart Allen into the role of Kid Flash as opposed to Impulse, Johns had a good grasp of each character that lead to an enjoyable read. I would stop after Infinite Crisishowever, because his last few issues are mainly set-up for the rather disappointing next writer. Without a doubt, what Johns is currently most well-known for JSA: Savage Times Volume 6 his revitalization of the Green Lantern franchise. Johns first massive event was Infinite Crisis sure, Day of Judgment was an event, JSA: Savage Times Volume 6 hardly on the same scale. This has been mentioned at least briefly in every one of these lists for DC. Geoff Johns was one of the four co-writers of this weekly epic, which was about as important to the DC Universe as Infinite Crisis itself. Geoff Johns loves Superman. Pure and simple. While he had done a few single issues for the big blue boy scout early in his career, Johns really JSA: Savage Times Volume 6 to explore the character after Infinite Crisis and I still believe that Up, Up and Away! However, as Johns is a writer of serial fiction in a massive universe, you can bet that he is going to reference previous things he has written, such as the aforementioned throwbacks to his time on Hawkman. Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal.

It was during the fall of 1941 that Herron came cover for Fawcett and the first of the CMJr origin trilogy, Master Comics #21 (Dec. 1941). Below up with the idea of a new addition to the Fawcett family. With Captain is a vignette derived from Raboy’s cover art for Captain Marvel Jr. #26 (Jan. 1, 1945). Marvel sales increasing dramatically since his debut in February 1940, Fawcett management figured a teenage version of the “Big Red Cheese” would only increase their profits. Herron liked Raboy’s art very much, and wanted a more illustrative style for the new addition, as opposed to the C. C. Beck or Pete Costanza simplified approach on Captain Marvel. The new boy-hero was ably dubbed Captain Marvel Jr., and it was Mac Raboy who was given the job of visualizing him for the very first time. Jr.’s basic attire was blue, with a red cape.

Amid a limited media landscape that otherwise consisted of radio, film, newspaper, and magazines, comics served as a useful tool in engaging readers of all ages to get behind the war effort. The aims of this research was to examine a sampling of messages put forth by comic book publishers before and after American involvement in World War II in the form of fictional comic book stories. In this research, it is found that comic book storytelling/messaging reflected a theme of American isolation prior to U.S. involvement in the war, but changed its tone to become a strong proponent for American involvement post-the bombing of Pearl Harbor. This came in numerous forms, from vilification of America’s enemies in the stories of super heroics, the use of scrap, rubber, paper, or bond drives back on the homefront to provide resources on the frontlines, to a general sense of patriotism.
