Two others, the Brown Bear Ursus arctos and Polar Bear Ursus maritimus also occur in Asia (the Polar Bear only in the Arctic region of Siberia), as well as in Europe and North America. Only the American Black Bear Ursus americanus and Andean (Spectacled) Bear Tremarctos ornatus do not occur in Asia. Most Asian bear species face conservation threats, including the threat posed by ongoing trade in bear parts. Unfortunately, there is a lack of reliable data concerning Asia’s bear populations and the challenges facing them. With this in mind, TRAFFIC, the joint wildlife trade program of WWF and the World Conservation Union (IUCN), took the lead in organizing the Fourth International Symposium on the Trade in Bear Parts, held on October 4th 2007 in Karuizawa, Japan. With support from WWF–Japan, the WWF International Global Species Programme, the IUCN/SSC Bear Specialist Group, and the Animals Asia Foundation, the symposium brought together representative from wildlife management authorities, conservation groups, animal welfare organizations, as well as academics, researchers, and members of the Traditional Medicine community. Approximately 90 people attended, most from Asian countries. Earlier symposia in this series have focused on broad global issues such as the status of bear species and populations on the various continents they inhabitat, the effectiveness of trade regulations and law enforcement in combating illegal trade in bear parts, the use of bear bile in traditional medicine and pharmaceutical alternatives to it, and related topics. That's why I'm delighted to be able to give you a comprehensive summary of our work in 2016 in the form of Report On Our Work this annual report. During the past year, FOUR PAWS had 11 national branches Wild Animals and operated in a further 14 countries around the world. Stray animal care 12 Helping Bears teams in eight countries neutered and treated more than 10,000 animals living 16 Helping Big Cats on the streets. Our disaster support campaign organised food for about 10,500 farm animals, preventing them from starving. The team led by vet Dr Amir Khalil 18 Great Apes in Need released 15 zoo animals from the Gaza Strip and saved them from certain death. OWL AND BIRD OF PREY CENTRE, Haringsee 20 At our five bear sanctuaries and three big cat centres, we fed and looked after 74 22 Fur Farming Campaign bears and 107 big cats every day throughout 2016.   • Sea of Okhotsk: Seals, Seabirds and a Legacy of Sorrow
    SEA OF OKHOTSK: SEALS, SEABIRDS AND A LEGACY OF SORROW Little known outside of Russia and seldom visited by westerners, Russia's Sea of Okhotsk dominates the Northwest Pacific. Bounded to the north and west by the Russian continent and the Kamchatka Peninsula to the east, with the Kuril Islands and Sakhalin Island guarding the southern border, it is almost landlocked. Its coasts were once home to a number of groups of indigenous people: the Nivkhi, Oroki, Even and Itelmen. Their name for this sea simply translates as something like the ‘Sea of Hunters' or ‘Hunters Sea', perhaps a clue to the abundance of wildlife found here. In 1725, and again in 1733, the Russian explorer Vitus Bering launched two expeditions from the town of Okhotsk on the western shores of this sea in order to explore the eastern coasts of the Russian Empire. For a long time this town was the gateway to Kamchatka and beyond. The modern make it an inhospitable place. However the lure of a rich fishery town of Okhotsk is built near the site of the old town, and little and, more recently, oil and gas discoveries means this sea is has changed over the centuries. Inhabitants now have an air still being exploited, so nothing has changed. In 1854, no fewer service, but their lives are still dominated by the sea. Perhaps than 160 American and British whaling ships were there hunting no other sea in the world has witnessed as much human whales. Despite this seemingly relentless exploitation the suffering and misery as the Sea of Okhotsk.

The earliest medicinal literature (Shen-nong Ben Cao) dates back to 482 BC and records 365 types of medicinal issues. One of the most famous Chinese herbals, (Ben Cao Gang Mu) was written by Li Shi-zhen during the Ming dynasty (1590). This work lists 1,892 types of herbs used as medicine. In the above mentioned literature, animal ingredients make up less than 10% of the medicinal ingredients, and the majority of those animal parts are insects. There is very little use of mammal body parts listed in these early Chinese traditional medicines1. The use of bear parts in medicines in China dates back over 3,000 years. Medicinal uses for bear gall bladder first appeared in writing in the seventh century A.D. in the Materia Medica of Medicinal Properties2. The use of bear bile has since spread to other Asian countries such as Korea and Japan where it has been adopted for use in local traditional medicines. Plant and animal products which are selected for use in Chinese medicine are classified according to their properties.

    AN ASSESSMENT ON THE WELFARE STATUS OF ENDANGERED TERRESTRIAL MAMMALS AT NEPAL CENTRAL ZOO BY RAVEE TANDUKAR In Partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor in Development Studies (BDevS), September 2014 a project work on the title ‘An Assessment on the Welfare Status of Endangered Terrestrial Mammals at Nepal Central Zoo’ has been submitted to Kathmandu University. The research started from the month of June till September, 2014. Summary The conditions at the Central Zoo were found to have improved in the welfare standards for seven endangered terrestrial mammals. Three enclosures failed, namely that of Asian Elephant, One- Horned Rhinoceros, and Striped Hyena. The researcher concludes that immediate improvements of the failed enclosures and translocation of the larger endangered terrestrial mammals to the planned new ‘Open Zoo’ location at Suryabinayak, Bhaktapur, are urgent matters to be addressed. The Central Zoo of Kathmandu is the only place in the country where various native as well as exotic wildlife species can be observed. The Central Zoo is managed by Nepal Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) and the only zoo recognized by the Government. Till date no legislation such as Zoo Act or Policy has been established. In the absence of such legislation the zoo has been deprived of clear guidelines and budget allocations to improve its standards. When it comes to captive endangered terrestrial mammals, the need of such legislation is even more pressing. Apart from incidental journalistic write ups in the local media, little research has been conducted into the welfare standards of the animals at the zoo.

Forest fragmentation is a threat to flying squirrel population due to dependence on gliding locomotion in forests. Therefore, it is essential to understand their gliding ability. The gliding locomotion of Pteromys volans orii, were observed from July 2003 to June 2005, in Obihiro, Hokkaido, Japan. The horizontal distance and glide ratio obtained from 31 glides were employed as indicators to know their gliding ability. The gliding ability was not affected by weight and sex in the Siberian flying squirrel. Mean horizontal distance and glide ratio were 18.90 m and 1.70 with great variation. Although maximum values were 49.40 m (horizontal distance) and 3.31 (glide ratio), most of the horizontal distance and glide ratio were in the ‘10–20 m’ and ‘1.0–1.5’, respectively. Therefore, to retain the flying squirrel populations, forest gaps should not exceed the distance traversable with a glide ratio of 1.0 (distance between forests/tree height at the forest edg).
