THE IMPORTANCE OF WINDMILLS FOR THE NETHERLANDS • • 32 km ca 3 hours INTRODUCTION A gentle creak and a soft ‘whoosh’ as the sails zip past is all you hear when standing close to a windmill. It’s worth bearing in mind that a century or so ago nigh on ten thousand windmills were fully operational day in day out in the Netherlands! They were used to reclaim polders, mill grain, to press oil from seeds or to saw wood. This wood, for example, ensured a fl ourishing shipbuilding industry in the Zaanstreek region, which is where the world’s fi rst bona fi de industrial zone emerged in the seventeenth century. When the windmills found themselves in competi- tion with steam and later diesel and electricity, they gradually CYCLE JUNCTIONS: disappeared from the Dutch landscape, leaving the 1200 FOLLOW THE NUMBERS... windmills that remain today and are being lovingly The route description features several numbers in green circles. maintained and protected. Climate resilience of railway stations in The Netherlands A risk assessment for passenger stations Master Thesis Janieke Scholten December 2020 I The cover of this report shows a photo created by Jos van Zetten II Climate resilience of railway stations in The Netherlands A risk assessment for passenger stations By Janieke Scholten in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Civil Engineering at the Delft University of Technology, to be defended publicly on the 9th of December 2020 at 09:00. Supervisor: Dr. ir. F.H.M. van de Ven TU Delft Thesis committee: Dr. ir. J.G. Langeveld TU Delft Dr. ir. A.J. van Binsbergen TU Delft Ir. J.C.J. Maltha ProRail Ing. A. Toufexes ProRail An electronic version of this thesis is available at http://repository.tudelft.nl/. III IV Acknowledgements With the completion of this graduation thesis, my Master of Science in Civil Engineering at the Delft University of Technology comes to an end. I conducted my research in collaboration with ProRail Stations on the ‘Development and Policy’ department, by means of a graduate internship. When I started, climate adaptation for stations was a relatively unexplored topic at ProRail, which gave me the opportunity to help shape the way climate change is evaluated and addressed. This has stimulated me to challenge myself to work independently and always be critical of my findings. It has also allowed me to combine my interests in water management and climate adaptation, from both a technical and socio-economic perspective. I am therefore thankful for the opportunity ProRail has offered me, and for the trust which I received during the whole process.

Hard remmen etc. Zet eens "mystery guests" in of zo !

If accidents or near-accidents nevertheless occur, a thorough investigation into the causes of the problem, irrespective of who is to blame for it, may help to prevent similar problems from occurring in the future. It is important to ensure that the investigation is carried out independently from the parties involved. This is why the Dutch Safety Board itself selects the issues it wishes to investigate, mindful of citizens’ position of dependence with respect to public authorities and businesses.
