Welcome to St. George Greek Orthodox Church

From the desk of Fr. Neofitos – ’s Presence, Our Presence

The Catechetical Paschal of our Father Among the Saints, St. , Archbishop of

If there are devout and God loving people here, let them enjoy this beautiful, radiant festival. If there are prudent servants, enter joyously into the Lord's joy. Whoever may be spent from fasting, enjoy now your reward. Whoever has toiled from the first hour, receive today your just settlement. If any came after the third hour, celebrate gratefully. If any of you arrived after the sixth, have no misgivings, you have lost nothing. If some have been as late as the ninth, come forward, do not be at a loss. If any of you have arrived only at the eleventh hour, do not be dismayed for being late. The Master is gracious: He accepts the last even as the first; He gives rest to those of the eleventh as well as to those who have labored from the first; He is lenient with the last while looking after the first; to the one He gives, to the other He gives freely; He accepts the labors and welcomes the effort; honors the deed, but commends the intent. So, all of you, enter into the joy of our Lord: first and second, share the bounty. Rich and poor alike, celebrate together. Sober or heedless, honor the day. Those who fasted and those who did not, rejoice today. The table is full, everyone fare sumptuously. The calf is fatted; no one go away hungry. Everyone, savor the banquet of faith; relish the riches of His goodness. No one need lament poverty, for the kingdom is seen as universal. No one need grieve over sins; forgiveness has dawned from the tomb. No one need fear death; the Savior's death has freed us from it. While its captive He stifled it. He despoiled Hades as He descended into it; it was angered when it tasted His flesh. Foreseeing this, Isaiah proclaimed: "Hades," he said, "was angered when he met You below." It was angered because it was abolished. It was angered because it was mocked. It was angered because it was slain. It was angered because it was shackled. It received a body and encountered God. It took earth and came face to face with heaven. It took what it saw and fell by what it could not see. Death, where is your sting? Hades, where is your victory? Christ is risen and you are overthrown. Christ is risen and demons have fallen. Christ is risen and angels rejoice. Christ is risen and life rules. Christ is risen and not one dead remains in the tomb. For Christ, having risen from the dead, has become the first fruits of those that slept. To Him be the glory and the dominion forever. Amen.

Apolitykion of St. John Chrysostom The grace that from your mouth shone forth like a torch illumined the universe. It deposited in the world the treasures of the absence of avarice. It showed us the height that is attained by humility. Now you instruct us by your words, Father John Chrysostom. Intercede with Christ God, the Word himself, entreating Him to save our souls.

The blessed words of John, read after the midnight Liturgy on Pascha Sunday lavishly paint a blessed of our Lord’s love and compassion toward his beloved creation, humanity. Our Lord loves the last even as the first. His compassion and His justice are unlike that exists in the world. Why would there be mercy on the last? Why would the first receive the same as the last and vice versa? Love does not rejoice when someone else fails or suffers. Our Lord does not want the death of the sinner but life and the return of the sinner. He leaves the 99 sheep to go save the one and then the entire village rejoices: the heavenly Kingdom of angelic hosts and Saints rejoice.

These holy days are a true test for our spirit. Our main concern should be our own family’s offering to our Lord. He offered us everything, what do we offer Him in turn?

First and foremost, we can offer Him our presence. Showing up is half the battle. The thief on the cross is proof that God's justice his merciful. His love is abounding. As long as we draw breath, the door is open. His arms are wide open waiting for our presence. Our chance is now. The precious life we have been given can be used for the glory of God or for the demise of our soul, for the evil one.

Our presence is required not only in church but full body, heart, and soul too in the presence of God. His presence is revealed to us through our own struggle toward holiness; our fasting, prayer, almsgiving, church services, holy , sacrifices, and offerings. These ascetical practices open our eyes to the presence of our God and allow for the awareness of our presence to share His presence. It is we who are many times absent from his presence as worldly, earthly beings consumed by distractions and difficulties. Our experience of God comes from these practices.

Welcome to St. George Greek Orthodox Church

And for those that choose to be present and pick up their cross and follow their God, the road can be perilous. We might feel alone, tired, beaten by the realities of this life. The resurrection is a small foretaste of our rest, our joy, our reward. The race never ends. Christ is eternal and forever and his gift to us is eternity. Surrendering during our struggles is a choice. We ought not to see it as a race with an end but a life in His glory.

It does not matter who finishes first or last. In the parable with the talents, the wicked servant lost his talent, and it was given to those who had more. Jesus said to those who have more, more will be given. God's justice is not our justice. He is a lenient judge, and his yoke is not heavy but light. We are asked to enter into the joy of his Kingdom on these days. To be in his presence and to remain in the race. And for those who are first, it is a great temptation to think that the race ends at the resurrection. We do not fast for 48 days so that we can become gluttonous the rest of the year. True spirituality is not about meat, dairy, and candles. It requires the Holy Spirit. Our efforts can become blessed by the Lord and be transformative. Living a life of spiritual struggle should transform us even after Holy Pascha and the Resurrection are celebrated.

The table is full, everyone fare sumptuously. The calf is fatted; no one go away hungry. Everyone, savor the banquet of faith; relish the riches of His goodness. No one need lament poverty, for the kingdom is seen as universal.

It is a choice we have to either choose spiritual poverty or His great banquet. During these blessed holy days, we have an opportunity to grow in our love for humanity and God. We might encounter individuals struggling that we have never seen in church before. It is a temptation to be judgmental and to not be loving and welcoming. The way of Christ requires us to be welcoming and accepting so that He in turn welcomes us and accepts us.

Where there is Jesus Christ, there is a sweet smell. Where there is death and judgment, there is a foul smell. Lazarus’s sister poured sweet smelling ointment on Jesus’s feet yet one in the crowd said that this should be sold and given to the poor instead of being wasted in this manner. This was none other than Judas Iscariot who was the treasurer of the group and had a greedy heart and mind. In the same way we ought to welcome acts of love that come our way and enter our church once a year or 100 times a year because our Lord is victorious, and his victory transcends our worldly rules and comprehension. We are asked to be holy like His Father is holy. Death itself has been destroyed by Jesus’s death. Who are we to stand in the way of his mercy when he gives it so freely to all of us sinners. It is our choice to rejoice or be like Judas.

We here at Saint George welcome all pilgrims.

So, all of you, enter into the joy of our Lord: first and second, share the bounty. Rich and poor alike, celebrate together.

St. George is waiting for you. Jesus Christ is waiting for you. He is the head, and we His members. We wish everyone a Kalo Pascha and a blessed Easter! We look forward to once again embracing you and seeing you all in celebration!

Philoptochos News By Olga Delorey

The late winter and early spring months continued to be somewhat quiet for the St. George Philoptochos. We held our regular business meetings although attendance was low due to the weather and continued concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic. Please be assured our meetings are held in accordance with our parish council guidelines. Seating is socially distant, masks are required and temperatures taken upon sign-in. How blessed we are to be able to worship together as a community in church once again. As Father Neofitos recently said, he feels like it is his and Presvytera’s first , and Pascha with their St. George family. Indeed, we feel the same…and the sweet voice of baby George Nektarios is music to our ears!

During the months of March-April, our Philoptochos fulfilled its philanthropic mission by providing donations to the following: Orthodox Christian Mission Center, Support A Mission , Hellenic College/Holy Cross, Hellenic Cultural Center, Orthodox Christian Prison Ministry, Family Promise of the Capital Region, Albany Medical Center (Hug A Heart Pillow Project), City Mission of Schenectady (student toiletry kits), Salvation Army (soup kitchen bag lunches) and St. George Greek Orthodox Church (Easter Donation and Flower Frame).

Our heartfelt gratitude to the following Soup Kitchen Bag Lunch sponsors: Paula & Hari Kingra (March) and Steve & Alice Giakoumis (April).

The Ladies Philoptochos wishes you and your family a joyous PASCHA!

Upcoming meetings: Thursday, May 20, 2021 at 6:30 pm. Due to continued pandemic restrictions, our annual June picnic and auction will not take place. Let us pray we can gather together next year!

“...for I was hungry and you gave me food ...... inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me” Matthew 25: 35-40

Fellowship News By Eliana Georgelos

Καλή Σαρακοστή και Καλό Πάσχα!

Spring is finally here and with it comes and our preparations for Pascha. May we all have a blessed, peaceful, and spiritually beneficial Great Lent, leading us to the Bright Pascha of the Lord on May 2nd. During the Lenten season and beyond, our church has been decorated with so many lovely fresh floral arrangements. We have enjoyed these arrangements each Sunday during Lent, throughout the Lenten mid week services such as the Complines, Presanctified liturgies, Salutations to the Virgin Mary and on into Holy Week, all donated by our parishioners. Our Fellowship group donated the fresh flowers around one of the Holy Week , and the Kouvouklion housing the Epitaphio is always beautifully decorated, thanks to Evan and Elaine Euripidou and crew. We thank all the St. George parishioners who very generously donated so many flowers to beautify our church during this holy time.

Our heartfelt thanks are also extended to Father Neofitos and Presvytera Catherine for so lovingly maintaining our services throughout the Lenten season. They were here for us during all the Sunday and mid week services, with little George happily “chanting” along with his parents. We are so blessed to have the dedication of this wonderful family. Thank you Father, Presvytera and George for your love and sacrifice.

Despite the Covid pandemic, our Fellowship group was able to meet for lunch both in March and April. A pizza lunch was served in March, and a Lenten meal consisting of linguini with clam sauce/roasted veggies, a garbanzo bean casserole (Revithia), a cabbage /rice casserole (Lahanorizo), and a Lenten lemon cake for dessert. At both meetings, CDC and Archdiocesan guidelines of social distancing, contact tracing, temperature taking, and mask wearing except while eating were strictly enforced. With Covid numbers declining and most of us having been fully vaccinated by Pascha, we look forward to continuing our Fellowship gatherings in May and June.

Best wishes are extended to our entire St. George family for good health in the coming months. May this Lenten season be one of reflection and repentance, and may Pascha bring us all a renewal of our faith.

We hope you enjoy some of the photos taken at our March meeting:

Stewardship for St. George

Christos Anesti!!

It is such a glorious time of year. WELWELCOMEDespite the hardships we have all faced over TO the past OURyear dealing with the COVID-19 situation, our faith and devotion to God has kept the St. George community active with church services and ministry programs. We have been touched by the grace of God. FAMILY Thank you to our members who have been fulfilling their pledge responsibility. It is very important to give in proportion to what you have received. If you would like to increase your pledge, please let us know. Your participation helps to support the ministries of St. George. Please remember that in addition to supporting the financial needs of the Church, your pledge is a personal commitment you have with God. 1 Timothy 6:17-19 - Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

May the blessings of Easter fill your homes with peace, love and joy.

St. George Greek School

From Mrs. Ioanna Loula: Well, this is definitely a successful school year for St. George Greek school! We have 20 amazing students from the Albany area, Kingston, Massachusetts, and . What is so exciting about our program, is that we have a lot of Pre-k, Kindergarten, and 1st Grade students, which give us hope about the Greek language and Greek culture. We started off with two classes (level 1 and level 2) on Thursdays but since our goal is to make our classes both level and age-appropriate we added the Pre-k & Kindergarten class on Fridays. All our students have made tremendous progress! They enjoy the online interactive activities; the role plays and the short videos we watch in Greek. Although they are tired from their daytime school meetings, they are still able to attend Greek school from the comfort of their home. I truly admire my lovely students for their enthusiasm and passion to learn Greek!

Teen & Adult Greek School. Taking stock. From Mr. George Cotzas We are fast approaching the end of the 2020/2021 School Year, a very productive year. Our Monday class consisted of two groups, a Beginner and a more Advanced one. Most students attended both classes. The corona virus forced us early in the year to go virtual, a blessing in disguise, in retrospect. This increased the efficiency, comfort and quality of class attendance, especially for our student … from Delaware. This also allowed us to spend every week, consistently, 1 ½ hours with the first group and more than an hour with the second group. It is, therefore, not a surprise that the Beginner group will cover the eight first lessons of our Papaloizos textbook, a record high during my five teaching years. Thus, the students could master the conjugation of Active Voice Verbs in the Present Tense and the Subjective & Possessive Cases of of all three genders.
