Introduction

The 2016 World Championships will be hosted in Lanesborough/Ballyleague, in the midlands of Ireland where the is a population of around 1400 people in the locality.

On the shores of Lough Ree it lays geographical claim to the centre of Ireland and is in the heart of the Irish Lakelands region. The lough narrows at , a 30 minute drive away, a buzzing town complete with all the activities, attractions and accommodation of a city.

Based on the success of the World Feeder Fishing Championships of 2014 in the small town of Coachford, Co. Cork the organisers will aim to re-create the hospitality as can be shown by a small community in rural Ireland.

There is a good range of self-catering and hotel accommodation in the area to choose from with some in the immediate locality and others 15 to 30 minutes’ drive away.

The Gala Dinner will be held in the heart of the community in a special location close to the River Shannon.

River Shannon / Lough Ree

At 30km long Lough Ree is the second largest lake on the River Shannon system. It is a large rich limestone lough of 10,500 hectares in area and classed as a mixed fishery with good stocks of trout, pike and coarse fish present. The town of Lanesborough lies to the north and the vibrant, flourishing town and angling centre of Athlone is located to the southern end of the lake, a distance of over 25 kilometres.

The numerous weedy bays and inlets of the main lake and smaller waters are all top class for pike, bream, roach and trout fishing. The lough is the venue for yearly boat championships with pike specimens recorded at 113cm in the competition.

We will fish an area of approx. 9km into the Lough from the jetty at Lanesborough and section of the River. A detailed map of the competition boundaries will be provided by the organisers.

During the World Championships only two species of fish will be counted in the event, they will be Pike (above 50cm) and Perch (above 25cm). Other predatory fish in the system are out of season and will not be counted (Trout and Salmon). There is no requirement to fish with barbless hooks or single hooks on the water.

During the competition the length of the fish will determine the number of points awarded per centimetre squared. The ranking shall be made based on the points (expressed in square cm) obtained, and by summing up the square of the length of each fish caught by the two anglers making up the “pair”.

COMMUNITY HALL

MARINA

The Headquarters for the competition will be at Lanesborough Community Hall where registration will also take place on Wednesday 5th October. Boats will launch from Ballyleague Marina.
