Kleiber for the degree of Master of Science in Horticulture presented on June 6, 2013 Title: Comparison of Baits for Monitoring the Spotted Wing Drosophila, Drosophila suzukii Abstract approved: Denny J. Bruck Spotted wing Drosophila (SWD), Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae), is a pest of small and stone fruits that is widely distributed across much of the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. Unlike other members of the Drosophilidae that only lay eggs in overripe or rotting fruit, SWD infest ripening and ripe fruit. The female SWD has a serrated ovipositor that allows her to lay eggs under the skin of a wide range of fruits, where the eggs hatch into larvae and they consume the inside of the fruit. This feeding results in fruit collapse and deterioration, and the hole created by the oviposition puncture allows for secondary infection by microorganisms, yield losses, reduced fruit quality and degrades. The current control is to apply an insecticide treatment when the fruit begins to color and continue to keep the crop protected with chemical treatments until harvest is complete. The current monitoring tools are not sensitive enough to attract SWD at the critical time to establish economic thresholds, appropriately time treatments and allow growers to make good management decisions. The objective of this research project was to determine if a more sensitive attractant than the currently standard 5% acidity apple cider vinegar traps could be defined. A number of food products and commercially available lures were tested in greenhouse and field experiments for their attractiveness to D. -

SHARMA* Zoological Survey of India, Kolkata INTRODUCTION The Shiwaliks form the southernmost belt of the Himalayan range (the lower and upper Himalayas being the other two) and have an average elevation of 900-1200 m. At present, the Shiwaliks include the entire southwestern foothills of Himalayas from Indus River in the Northwest to the Brahamaputra River in the Northeast. The Shiwalik eco-region extends from about 29°33' N latitude and 74°80' E longitude. These ranges represent the southern most zone of about 8-40 km width and about 800 km length of Himalayas. The Shiwaliks of Northwest States spread over an area of more than three million hectares and represent most fragile ecosystem of the country. In the north, these hills fall in the districts of Udhampur, Kathua, Jammu and ultimately merging with Reasi and Poonch districts of Jammu & Kashmir. They extend in the southwest to across parts of Chamba, Kangra, Bilaspur, Una, Hamirpur, Solan and Sirmour districts in Himachal Pradesh; Guradaspur, Hoshiarpur, Nawashahar and Roopnagar in Punjab; Union territory of Chandigarh; Ambala, Panchkula, Yamunanagar in Haryana; Dehradun, Haridwar, Udhamsinghnagar in Uttaranchal and Saharanpur and Rampur in Uttar Pradesh. Out of three million hectares, Punjab Shiwaliks accounts for 0.14 million hectares where as Himachal 1.14 million hectares. The Shiwalik ranges or the outer Himalayas gradually rise from the Indo-Gangetic Plains with a gentle slope of about 3-4 degrees till they touch a rugged topography and bare steep slopes up to an altitude of about 1000 m. -

Among them, P. alceae Preyssler, P. chalybea Hendel and P. clausa (Macquart) are newly reported from Mainland China; P. hainanensis n. sp. is described and figured. A key to the species, diagnoses, description and illustrations are also provided. Key words: Diptera, Ulidiidae, Physiphora Fallén, key, new species, China Introduction The genus Physiphora Fallén, 1810 belongs to the tribe Ulidiini of the subfamily Ulidiinae (Kameneva & Korneyev, 2006). It includes 16 species widespread in the Old World tropical, subtropical and temperate areas, with most species occurring in the Afrotropical Region, but two species have been introduced into the New World, Australia and Oceania (Séguy, 1941; Steyskal, 1977, 1980; Zaitzev, 1984; Krivosheina & Kri- vosheina, 1997; Kameneva, 2000, 2001). Biology of Physiphora species is poorly known. Hennig (1940) summarized the larval habitats of P. alceae Preyssler (as P. demandata Fabricius), which include horse and cow dung, rotting clover and daffodil bulbs, corn silage, wounds on date palms, etc. Krivosheina & Krivosheina (1997) found larvae of P. -

Milichiella lacteipennis fue atraída solamente a chinches de Coreidae y Pentatomidae, y en general más fuertemente hacia las hembras que a los machos. Cuando eran atraídas, el tiempo de la llegada del primer milichiido a los chinches aplastados tuvo un rango entre 2 a 34 segundos dependiendo del sexo y de la especie de chinche. Solo las hembras adultas de M. lacteipennis fueron atraídas a los chinches. Palabras clave: experimento de atracción, Milichiella, Coreidae, Pentatomidae, Reduviidae, Rhyparochro- midae. SUMMARY Ten species in four hemipteran families: Coreidae, Pentatomidae, Reduviidae, and Rhyparochromidae were crushed by hand to test their attraction towards Milichiella lacteipennis Loew (Diptera: Milichiidae). Milichiella lacteipennis was attracted only to bugs of the families Coreidae and Pentatomidae, and was generally more strongly attracted to females than males. When attracted, the time of arrival of the first milichiid fly to the crushed bugs ranged from 2 to 34 seconds depending on the species and sex of the bug tested. -

September 1997 Specimens representing 19 orders and 169 arthropod families (mostly insects) were collected from greenleaf manzanita brushfields in northeastern California and identified to species whenever possible. More than500 taxa below the family level wereinventoried, and each listing includes relative frequency of encounter, life stages collected, and dominant role in the greenleaf manzanita community. Specific host relationships are included for some predators and parasitoids. Herbivores, predators, and parasitoids comprised the majority (80 percent) of identified insects and related taxa.
