He was captured by the Japanese and interned in the notorious Changi Soldiers Prison. He was later transferred to a prison further east where he died in July 1944 aged 29. He is buried in a military cemetery on the island of Ambon, Indonesia. Ron was a particularly gifted musician. After working as an apprentice machinist in Guildford, he joined the Army soon after the outbreak of war as a stretcher-bearer in the Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment. During the North African campaign, he was fatally shot by a sniper while recovering the wounded in October 1942 aged just 23, and is buried in El Alamein Military Cemetery in Egypt.
