REWIRED Episode 5 - The town that says yes. Dubbo Solar farm podcast transcript SOURCE CONTENT DAVE O’NEIL I filmed a film called The Nugget in Mudgee. Which is like maybe an hour and half, two hours from Dubbo. COURTNEY This is comedian Dave O’Neil back in 2002 he was working on The CARTY Nugget with Stephen Curry and Eric Bana. More recently, it’s the music born in Dubbo that’s front of mind. DAVE O’NEIL So Dubbo had a cinema so I would drive on the weekend to go to the cinema in Dubbo where I saw Bridget Jones’ Diary, and thought it was pretty good. But I remember Dubbo having a very beautiful… I remember it’s surrounded by park land… I remember thinking it’s really beautiful and then going into town and getting some money out of the ATM and being scared by some of the guys hanging around looking at me. So it was an interesting place. COURTNEY What does he think of when someone says Dubbo? CARTY DAVE O’NEIL I think of The Reels immediately… the Reels and also the Zoo… they’ve got an amazing zoo there. COURTNEY The Zoo, that’s the Taronga Western Plains Zoo. It draws around a CARTY quarter of a million visitors each year to the town of 40 thousand. It’s one reason there’s so many motels here, they’re everywhere. The Reels were a local band most people of certain age will know straight away. In a few casual conversations people mention they went to school with Craig or their brothers were friends.

For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] Place and music: Performing "the region" on the New South Wales Far North Coast Abstract This paper draws on research conducted for over a decade on the musical cultures of the New South Wales Far North Coast, as a contribution to debates in geography and popular music studies on the links between music, place and articulations of cultural identities. Patterns of migration and economic restructuring over the last 20 years have transformed the Far North Coast region, with associated changes in the images conjured to describe the region – from those centred on dairying, fishing and sugar harvesting to those of a ‘lifestyle’ or ‘alternative’ region, with growth in employment in tourism, recreational services, ‘gourmet’ agricultural production, culinary delights, homewares retail and the arts. Music has been a constant presence in the region throughout generations, but became much more pronounced after significant counter-urban migrations to the area began in the 1970s.

  • The Collation of the Charles Sturt University Wagga Campus Band Posters
The Collation of the Charles Sturt University Wagga Campus Band Posters Regional Archives Summer Scholarship 2011/2012 By Cecelia Steele Introduction In 2010 I was put forward to get an accurate listing of the band posters that were previously displayed in the Auditorium at Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga Main Campus. In order for this task to be completed all the posters needed to be identified and put into chronological order (where possible). Any distinctive features that may be useful in narrowing down the identification process would also need to be noted; this helped when going through other resources, such as the Hungappa and Grapphorea, in order to find out additional information about the dates of performances so as to put the posters in order. The purpose of getting a concise listing of the band posters was so that it could be recorded and also so that some of the significant bands that have visited could be identified. It also makes it easier if in the future for the posters to be digitally reproduced as duplicate copies could be identified. The posters were in varying conditions; some are laminated, ripped, faded, frail, and many of the older posters have been glued onto wooden board – it is uncertain whether this was done as a preservation or display technique, but regardless it has resulted in the posters deteriorating and fading, with the glue cracking and breaking down the paper over time. This has made the identification process more difficult as in some cases the dates could no longer be read. This report will give a brief history of the band performances as discovered through the posters and the student magazines, the condition of the posters, the method that was used in order to collect this information and to arrange the posters in chronological order, and some difficulties encountered while trying to discover the dates.

  • The History of Roadrunner (1978-83)
THE HISTORY OF ROADRUNNER (1978-83) By Donald Robertson Synopsis This is the story of how an Adelaide punk fanzine blossomed into a well-loved national music magazine that chronicled the glory days of Australian post-punk and ‘pub rock’ music in the period 1978-83. The do-it-yourself ethos espoused by the UK punk movement in the mid-1970s was strongly felt in Australia and inspired bands to form, play live and record and release their own records. The concurrent expansion of live music venues across the country (mainly pubs) meant more bands could live, work and play. Roadrunner was also very much a product of this do-it-yourself ethos. From the bunch of evangelical music fans and writers who initially came together, some left and others joined and as those involved became more technically proficient the magazine developed and grew. With no financial backing (until the final despairing issue), Roadrunner survived for five years due to the combination of a posse of enthusiastic (and usually unpaid) contributors, a creative and understanding production crew, a sympathetic printer, the support of key music industry personalities and— perhaps most important of all—a small but dedicated readership. In 2017, the University of Wollongong in New South Wales made all 48 issues of Roadrunner available in a digital archive (at http://ro.uow.edu.au/roadrunner/). The History of Roadrunner 1 IntroduCtion When Martin Sharp, the internationally acclaimed Australian artist, died in 2013, I read that the University of Wollongong had created a digital archive of the Sydney and London Oz magazines that he was such a part of.
