1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Access for All Community Access to the State archives is an important initiative to provide people in regional and rural New South Wales with better access to the State's archives. The first stage of this initiative is the distribution of the Archives Resources Kit to 40 community access points throughout New South Wales. The Archives Resources Kit builds on the Genealogical Research Kit, and the Colonial Secretary's Papers, 1788-1825 issued in the 1980s and already held by some of the community access points. It includes explanatory material and links to information available on State Records' World Wide Website In the second stage of the initiative State Records will make preservation microfilm copies of more of our most important 19th century records. At the same time, it will progressively digitise the most heavily used records to make them available on the Internet.

1.2 Community Access Points State Records has established community access points at the following places: Albury, Armidale, Bathurst, Bega, Bourke, Broken Hill, Canberra, Casino, Cobar, Coffs Harbour, Cooma, Deniliquin, , Forster, Gosford, Goulburn, Grafton, Griffith, Inverell, Kempsey, Lake Macquarie, Lismore, Lithgow, Maitland, Moree, Mudgee, Muswellbrook, Newcastle (Newcastle Region Library, University of Newcastle), Nowra, Orange, Parkes, Port Macquarie, Tamworth, Taree, Tenterfield, Wagga Wagga, Wollongong (Wollongong City Library, University of Wollongong), Young

1.3 Archives Resources Kit Each community access point holds our Archives Resources Kit which consists of microfilm copies of our most popular and heavily used colonial records. Included are records to do with:  convict arrivals  assisted immigrants  births, deaths and marriages  publicans' licences  electoral rolls  naturalisation  returns of the colony ('Blue Books')  land grants, and  the wide range of functions of the Colonial Secretary (1788-1825). A selection of Guides and printed explanatory material is also included.

2. GUIDES AND OTHER EXPLANATORY MATERIAL

2.1 Concise Guide The Concise Guide to the State Archives of New South Wales, the main finding aid to the records held as State archives, is now available on CD-ROM as well as on our Website. The Concise Guide lists archives which were fully processed for use at the end of July 1991. Information on records processed after that date may be obtained on application to either the Sydney or Western Sydney Records Centres. State Records holds substantial quantities of records which have been transferred or designated for transfer to regional repositories (records are currently stored in Newcastle, Wollongong, Armidale, Wagga Wagga and Broken Hill). This material chiefly consists of selected Mines, Local Court, Police and Lands records, along with smaller quantities of Public Works, Education and other records in some repositories. Regional records which have actually been transferred to regional repositories are generally not listed in the Concise Guide, and details concerning these records are available on request. The Guide lists each series in the State Records in 255 separate government agencies. A government agency means a public office which functioned or functions by itself as a separate administrative unit. Usually the agency corresponds to a ministerial department, but sometimes the convenient unit is a branch or section of a department, or a statutory authority responsible to a Minister of the Crown through his or her department. The agencies are arranged in alphabetical order. Information on using the Concise Guide is given in the introductory section on the CD- ROM. The CD-ROM may be searched by a keyword which may be a topic, subject, place or name.

2.2 Subject Guides and Leaflets In addition to the Concise Guide to the State Archives of New South Wales, a range of other finding aids have been produced to assist users in locating records likely to be relevant to their research. These include: Subject Guides Guides which are included with the Archives Resources Kit  Government (Colonial) Architect, 1837-c.1970 (1979)  Surveyor General: Select List of Maps and Plans, 1792-1886 (1980)  Colonial Secretary: Naturalization and Denization records (Third edition, 1982)  Clerk of the Peace Part 1: Quarter Sessions Records, 1824-1920 (1982)  Guide to Shipping and Free Passenger Records (Second edition, 1984)  Surveyor General: Select list of Maps and Plans, 1792-1886. This was the main New South Wales State Government agency which implemented and administered the legislation and policy having an impact on Aboriginal people throughout New South Wales. There is also a list of material created by other New South Wales Government agencies which contain significant mention of Aboriginal people. It should be borne in mind, however, that this is not an exhaustive list of sources which can be used in tracing Aboriginal family and personal history. References to Aboriginal people are likely to be found throughout the records of various Government agencies held by State Records and may be located by means of the various guides, finding aids and indexes available in both State Records' Reading Rooms. The guide is also available on the State Records' Website. A Guide to State Archives, Relating to the Teaching of English to Post World War II Migrants. The guide helps to commemorate cultural diversity in NSW by bringing together State archives that document the provision of education to migrants in the latter half of the 20th century. The records listed in the guide reflect the changing role of government administration in adapting to a new era in immigration. The guide aims to list and describe those records of the Adult Migrant Education Service which celebrated 50 years of service in 1998. These records include information on pupils, teachers, classes and lessons.

3. MICROFORMS

3.1 The Colonial Secretary's Papers, 1788–1825 The Colonial Secretary's Papers, 1788-1825, are the most comprehensive collection of public records relating to the early years of European settlement in Australia. In order to make them more generally available they were first published in microform as part of the State Government's Departmental Program for the Australian Bicentenary. They comprise 72 reels of 35mm roll microfilm and the 312 microfiche which make up the microform edition of the Papers.

3.1.1 Introduction to the Colonial Secretary's Papers The correspondence of the Colonial Secretary is one of the most valuable sources of information on all aspects of the history of the Colony and the State of New South Wales. Chiefly responsible for this was the Colonial Secretary's pre-eminence in public life and the fortunate occurrence of the survival of the greater part of his papers. Included among these are earlier papers of the Secretary to the Governor taken over by the first Colonial Secretary, Frederick Goulburn, on his appointment in 1821. Background The position of Secretary to the Governor began with the foundation of the Colony and the duties of this officer gradually increased. Governor King described his duties in 1804: 'Secretary – Has the custody of all official papers and records belonging to the colony; transcribes the public despatches; charged with making out all grants, leases and other public Colonial instruments; also care of numerous indents or lists sent with convicts of their terms of conviction and every other official transaction relating to the colony and Government; and is a situation of much responsibility and confidence.' Historical Records of Australia (HRA) 1.4.538 Frederick Goulburn took office as Secretary and Registrar of the Records in 1821. He was the first such officer officially called Colonial Secretary and was appointed by a Commission dated 13 June 1820. He also held the position of Private Secretary to the Governor. Although this represented a change in the method of appointment and title of the office his commission did not detail his duties, which in fact were the same as those of his predecessor. Following a long dispute with Governor Brisbane the Colonial Secretary ceased to act as the Governor's Private Secretary. In May 1824 Major Ovens was officially appointed Brisbane's Private Secretary although he had in fact been acting in this capacity since the middle of 1823. Thus the two offices were separated. Many of the records prior to the establishment of the separate office were retained by the Colonial Secretary and hence appear here. Others were transferred at the end of 1825. Prior to 1823 all inwards correspondence for the Governor was addressed to the Governor, although filed in the office of the Secretary to the Governor and, after 1821, that of the Colonial Secretary. In 1823 a notice appeared in the Sydney Gazette directing that letters and memorials intended for the Governor were to be addressed to the Colonial Secretary and the following year Goulburn maintained that he was the only channel through which the Governor could give directions to the various members of the civil establishment. The duties of the various Government offices were revised by Governor Brisbane and notified in a Government and General Order dated 5 January 1825 (HRA 1.12.152). This also ordered that 'The Public Correspondence in the Colony is to be carried on generally through the medium of the Colonial Secretary. The Heads of Departments and Commandants of Stations (except when the subject relates to the Military Branch of the Service) will address their Applications and Reports to that Officer for the information or decision of the Governor'.

14 STATE RECORDS AUTHORITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES July 2003 Using the Archives Resources Kit

Previous to this the Governor must still have received many papers direct as the Memorandum of papers handed over at the end of 1825 shows. The basis of the dispute between the Governor and the Colonial Secretary had been the lack of an authoritative statement as to their relative positions. This was largely remedied in 1825 when Darling was given additional instructions on this matter: '... in addition to those functions which under your general Instructions are specially committed to the Colonial Secretary, he is to conduct, under your direction all Official Correspondence in the Colony, and is to act on all occasions as the general medium of Communication, through which your orders are to be signified either to the community at large, or to private persons.' (HRA 1.12.18)

3.1.2 The Papers The surviving records of the office of the Secretary to the Governor (1788-1821) include letters received and a few drafts of letters sent, and copies of agreements, despatches, out-letters, general orders, instructions, ordinary regulations, proclamations, memoranda, reports and returns. The original arrangement has been obscured by several re-arrangements. Few records survive prior to 1810 but the papers were fairly systematically kept after that time. Up to 1826 the letters received were probably kept in alphabetical sequence by the author of a letter or petition. No contemporary registration numbers appear on the letters. The surviving lists of memorials and petitions received are all arranged alphabetically and the papers were probably put away in the same order with perhaps some division by type of application and year. There have been several attempts to organise the early papers. The first appears to have taken place when Darling took office in 1826 - the lists of letters received in 1821 and 1822 are watermarked 1823. On 1 October 1857 Edward Smith Hall was appointed as an extra clerk in the Colonial Secretary's Office to work on the early official papers. Hall died on 18 September 1860 and would seem to have been engaged on this work in the interim period. It is not clear what he actually did. However he may have been responsible for the registration system on the 1824 letters received. A major re-arrangement of the early records was undertaken in the Colonial Secretary's Office during 1888-90 for the purpose of facilitating research in connection with the publication of the History of New South Wales from the Records. The correspondence up to 1826, with a few exceptions, was made up into bundles. A Summary of Colonial Records in the Colonial Secretary's Office, 1788-1826, NRS 902 [5/2331] was prepared listing each document or group of documents and showing the date of each, the writer, to whom it was addressed, and a description of its contents. A number was allocated to each bundle and to each item described. The description varies in detail however, as does the item described which may be one sheet of paper described with lengthy comments, or a whole bundle of papers dismissed with the words 'Miscellaneous and unimportant correspondence for the year'. There is an index in the front of this Summary. In various rearrangements of the records some of the items were removed from the bundles and consequently are located separately. Notes identifying the reference numbers of these items have been filmed where appropriate. See Handbook for further information and for a detailed listing of the Papers available in microform.

The published Index to the Papers should be used by all researchers wishing to locate documents concerning a particular person or subject. Indexes concerning Colonial Secretary's Correspondence, 1826-1853 have been compiled by Joan Reese, 72 Hobart Street, ST MARYS NSW 2760.  Colonial Secretary's Correspondence: Index to Convicts and Others

STATE RECORDS AUTHORITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES 15 Using the Archives Resources Kit July 2003

 Colonial Secretary's Correspondence: Index to letters sent re Convicts Contemporary Indexes and Registers 1826-1900 are available in State Records' Reading Rooms.

3.1.3 Using the Colonial Secretary's Papers and Index When searching for a particular person, place or subject, first consult the microfiche index to locate the entry. Example: BRADY, Patrick. Per 'Henry Porcher', 1825 1825 Dec 9 On list of convicts landed from the 'Henry Porcher' and forwarded to Liverpool for distribution (Reel 6016; [4/3516 p.104]) Go to Reel 6016 and first locate [4/3516]. This will appear on a title page and show that you are viewing the correct volume (as often more than one volume is filmed onto one microfilm). Once you have this, then look for your page number (page 104). Do not look for the page number before establishing that you are in the correct volume on the reel otherwise you may find page 104 in another volume which is on the reel and it will not contain the information you require. 3.2.1 Indexes to ships arrived, 1837-1925, NRS 13277 (Reels 2502-2503A) 2 rolls of 35mm microfilm These indexes record name and type of vessel, and date of its arrival. They relate to vessels arriving in Sydney only. The indexes are alphabetical by the name of the vessel; within each letter of the alphabet arrangement is chronological by date of arrival. The certificates note the name, age, calling, native place, health, religion and education of the immigrant; the names of his or her parents; and the amount of bounty claimed. This series complements the Agent's Immigrant Lists (series 3.2.3) above) but provides more information about the immigrants Index These immigrants are indexed in the printed publication Guide to Assisted Immigrants arriving Sydney and Newcastle, 1844-59, which forms part of the Archives Resources Kit. 3.2.5 Persons on bounty ships to Sydney, Newcastle and Moreton Bay ('Board's Immigrant Lists'), 1848-91, NRS 5317 (Reels 2458-2498) 41 rolls of 35mm microfilm Each entry records the name, age, marital status, calling, native place, religion, and education of the immigrant. Also recorded are the names of relations in the colony; names and addresses of parents; and any complaints respecting treatment aboard ship. The majority of ships travelled from a British port to Sydney. However, there were numerous arrivals from Hamburg in the 1850's, when considerable numbers of immigrants from Germany were recruited to come to New South Wales (which included Moreton Bay until 1859). In addition, the William Prowse (1853) and the Palmyra (1854) arrived from Madras carrying Eurasians; and the Annie H. Smith, N. Boynton, Sierra Nevada, Star of the West and the Ivanhoe arrived from New York in 1877-78. Also called the 'Board's Immigrant Lists', arrangement is alphabetical by the name of ship within each year. The series generally provides more information about immigrants than the Agent's Immigrant Lists (series 3.2.3 above), which it complements, but it is incomplete. The amount of information provided varies over the period and includes: certificate number; deposit number; name of depositor or sponsor; date of deposit; particulars of name, age, calling and address of the sponsored migrant; name and address of referee; amount paid towards cost of passage and outfit; nationality (English, Scotch, Irish, Foreigner) of sponsored migrant; ship and date of arrival; and, if necessary, date of refund of deposit on account of the non-arrival of the nominee. These volumes are particularly valuable for the period 1860-62 when the Board's Immigrant Lists (series 3.2.5 above) are missing; and after 1870 when they no longer supply the place of origin within the county in Ireland. Many months would usually pass between the deposit of the money and the arrival of the immigrant and researchers should keep this time lapse in mind when using these records. Indexes Indexes to the depositors are located in the front of volumes [4/4577], [4/4583-4588] and [4/4591-4598]. [4/4578] is a separate index covering the period October 1856 to December 1857, for which the register does not appear to have survived, and [4/4590] is a separate index to volume [4/4589]. There are no contemporary indexes for [4/4576] (1853-54) and [4/4579-4582] (December 1857 -December 1861).

3.4.1 Registers of Births, Deaths and Marriages, 1787-1856, NRS 12937 (Reels 5001-5048) 48 rolls of 35mm microfilm The registers record details of baptisms, burials and marriages. Although referred to as the 'Pre-1856' or 'Old Records', some entries relating to baptisms, burials or marriages up to 1901 are also included. These registers are arranged primarily by Registry Volume Number, Nos. 1-123. Within this arrangement, the following is a general breakdown: Vols 1-44 Church of England Vols 45-72 Baptisms - All other denominations Vols 73-101 Marriages - All other denominations Vols 102-120 Burials - All other denominations Vols 121-123 Supplementary Registers - Baptisms, Burials and Marriages, 1827-1901 In addition, the microfilms also contain some other records which do not fall into this numbering sequence. These are: [5/4219] Applications for marriage licences, 1836-44 [5/4221] Church of England Baptisms and Burials, 1850-53 [5/3841] Church of England Baptisms and Burials, 1833-37 These volumes have been included in the set of microfilms for the sake of completeness; all entries located in them also appear in other Registry volumes. A full description and listing of these records is available in Short Guide No. 4 Attorney General and Justice: Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages – Microfilm copies of Registers of Baptisms, Burials and Marriages, 1787-1856. Indexes Microfiche copies of the Pioneer series of Indexes to Births, Deaths and Marriages, 1788-1888, Federation series of Indexes to Births, Deaths and Marriages, 1889-1918 and NSW Between the wars series of Indexes to Death and Marriage, 1919-1945 are available from the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, GPO Box 30, SYDNEY NSW 2001 In looking for a particular entry relating to a pre-1856 baptism, burial or marriage which may be found in the registers on these microfilms, the portion of the microfiche Index which relates to the pre-1856 period should first be consulted. This will give a reference to volume and entry number. The Summary Listing or the Detailed Listing in Short Guide No. 4 should then be consulted to locate the appropriate microfilm reel for the register. If, in consulting the microfiche indexes for the pre-1856 records, the relevant reference is to a volume number other than Registry Volume Numbers 1 to 123, the researcher should approach the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, which holds these records. Item List This is a summary Item List provided for quick reference only. As these records are complex and difficult to use it is strongly suggested that the registers be used in conjunction with Short Guide No. 4, which gives much more detailed information about their arrangement.

3.4.2 Abstract of all licences for marriage granted to free persons, 17 March 1813-26 December 1827, NRS 1037 (Fiche 836) 1 microfiche In the early colony, marriages were of two kinds, either by licence or by the publication of banns. As the fees were comparatively high, only the more affluent members of the community married by licence. The licence was granted by the Governor as there was no Bishop of the Church of England in the Colony. Information given includes: the number and date of the licence; parties' names; and where, when and by whom the marriage was solemnised. In many cases name of parent (father or mother), name of previous spouse (for women only), occupation, and place of residence are also recorded. The Abstract on this fiche is numbered pages 151 to 222 as it is an extract from the series Registers of important documents, oaths and licences. Arrangement is numerical by licence number. Index See published Short Guide No. 5: Index to Abstract of all Licences for Marriage granted to Free Persons, March 1813 - December 1827, a copy of which is provided with the kit. 3.4.3 Reports of inquests, 1796 - April 1824, June 1828, NRS 5607 (Reels 2232-2233) 2 rolls of 35mm microfilm The volumes contain reports from coroners on inquests held throughout the Colony, including a few held in Van Diemen's Land and one at Port Macquarie. The deaths were mostly caused by drowning, apoplexy or a Visitation of God. There are also occasional murders, thieves killed in the course of a robbery and spearings by Aborigines (mostly in the Bathurst district).

Index The volumes have been indexed by State Records - entries have been made for the deceased and witnesses but not for the Coroners and members of the Jury. A list of the entries made for each volume is located in the front of each. Item List Reel Dates Ref. No. 2232 1796–1820 [2/8286] 2233 1821-1822 [2/8287] 2233 1823 [2/8288] 2233 Jan - Apr 1824 [2/8289] 2233 Jun 1828 [2/8290] 3.4.4 Registers of Coroners' inquests and Magisterial inquiries, 1834 - June 1942, NRS 343, 344 (Reels 2921-2927, 2224-2225 and 2763-2769) 16 rolls of 35mm microfilm The most important function of a Coroner was to inquire into unnatural or sudden deaths, and Coroners were authorised to hold inquests in all cases of death if the body should be lying within the Police district or districts in which his jurisdiction applied. In the more remote Police districts of the Colony where no Coroner was situated, magistrates could take depositions and inquire into the circumstances of death but, in such cases, a Justice of the Peace had no authority to empanel a Jury, as had a Coroner. In addition to this function, Coroners had a common law right to preserve general order, were authorised to hold inquests on bodies of all persons who died in prison and could also hold inquests respecting deaths taking place in asylums, hospitals or public institutions. In the event of the destruction of any property, real or personal, by fire the Coroner had jurisdiction to inquire into the

STATE RECORDS AUTHORITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES 31 Using the Archives Resources Kit July 2003

cause and origin of such fire. The first six volumes [4/6611.1-6615] record the district, before whom held, when and where held, date received, name of deceased, finding and date death certificate required. The later volumes also record age of deceased, locality of birth, locality of death, and cash or property owned at the time of death. The arrangement is by single number up to 1866, with the exception of [4/6611.1]. From January 1867 an annual single number is substituted. Indexes There are a number of indexes to this series, either included at the front of the register or in separate volumes, with entries generally being to the names of the deceased. For those inquests and inquiries which relate to fires and to unidentified or unnamed individuals, entries have been made under a number of general headings such as fire, origin of fire at, human remains, infant, new born child/infant, native (Aboriginal), and unknown. However, the registers are only partially indexed. Prior to 1899, indexes are located in the front of [4/6611.2] (H - Z only) and [4/6612] only; the remaining available indexes for this period, which are separate volumes, are to be found on the following microfilms: Reel Dates Ref. Additional papers concern convicts from India, Cape of Good Hope, Mauritius, Canada, South Australia, Western Australia etc and occasionally convicts to Van Diemen's Land, Norfolk Island or Port Phillip, as well as New South Wales. Item List The documents, unless otherwise stated, are 'Musters' or 'Assignment Lists' of convicts showing name, date and place of trial, and sentence. Some skilled labourers and badly-behaved convicts were assigned to work for the Government. There are two registers in this set: the Register of artificers and other labourers assigned ([4/4520] on Fiche 746); and the Register of prisoners who were not artificers and who were assigned ([4/4521] on Fiche 747-748). Artificers include the following skilled occupations: barbers, blacksmiths, brickmakers, carpenters, glaziers, hairdressers, house painters, sawyers, stone masons, shoemakers and tailors. Both volumes record date of assignment, to whom assigned, residence, prisoner's name, ship, date and reason for return to Government, and other remarks. The volume [4/4520] on Fiche 746 also records occupation. Index A typescript index to these volumes has been prepared by State Records and is filmed on Fiche 745. This index records name, ship, date of assignment, location of original, page number, and entry number (if applicable). Item List Fiche Dates Description 745 Index 746 24 Dec 1821 - 17 Jan 1825 [4/4520] 747 24 Dec 1821 - 27 Feb 1824 [4/4521 pp. 1-121] 748 27 Feb 1824 - 31 Dec 1824 [4/4521 pp. 122-165] 3.5.4 Register of Tickets of Leave, 29 July 1824 - 8 March 1827, NRS 12200 (Fiche 752-754) 3 microfiche A ticket of leave allowed a convict to work for his own benefit and to acquire property on the conditions that he resided within a prescribed area, attended a muster every few months and attended church weekly (if within a reasonable distance). The register records number of ticket, name, ship and year of arrival, when and where convicted, sentence, native place, calling, year of birth, height, complexion, hair, eyes, date of ticket, district, and general remarks. Index A typescript index to this volume has been prepared by State Records and is filmed on Fiche 752. In order to locate an entry in the register, the index should be searched for the convict's name; having located the convict, particular note should be taken of the second number in the Ticket of Leave (TL) No. column, ie. the number after the oblique.

3.7 Naturalization Records Other guides to the records:  Archives in Brief No. 3 Naturalisation Records State Records has published the guide Colonial Secretary: Naturalization and Denization records, 1834-1903, which provides more extensive information on these records. Naturalisation records from 1904 onwards are held by the National Archives of Australia. 3.7.1 Letters of Denization, 1834-47, NRS 1038 (Reel 128A part) 1 part roll of 35 mm microfilm Denization was a process by which an alien could acquire some of the rights of a natural born subject. The letters of denization recite the various rights and privilege conferred on the grantee, such as the right to own land, and the restrictions, such as the clause forbidding him to own or to be master of a British ship. They are signed by the Governor and sealed with the Great Seal of the Colony. Attached to the letters of denization are the signed copies of the oaths and declarations sworn. The letters of denization which have survived have been filmed at the beginning of Reel 128A, which also contains the first volume of the Registers of Certificates of Naturalization, series 3.7.3 below. Indexes A list of persons to whom letters of denization were granted is located at the front of series 3.7.2 below, the Naturalization index (Fiche 757). 3.7.3 Registers of Certificates of Naturalization, 1849-1903, NRS 1040, 1041 (Reels 128A–141A) 15 rolls of 35mm microfilm Provision of a general nature for the naturalisation of aliens in New South Wales was first made by Act 11 Vic. No.39, which came into force in 1849. This Act provided for the granting of certificates of naturalisation, which gave the naturalised persons all the rights of a natural born British subject, except the right to be a member of the Executive Council, Legislative Council or Legislative Assembly. These disqualifications were removed in 1858. These registers contain a complete record of certificates of naturalisation issued, certified as having been entered on record by the Colonial Secretary or Under Secretary. Each certificate states the name, native place, age, occupation, date and ship of arrival in the Colony, present place of residence, and reason for seeking naturalisation. Volumes 3 and 4 (on Reel 130) form a separate series, List of Aliens to whom Certificates of Naturalization CSG 1041 have been issued, and differ in format from the other volumes. These two volumes do not contain a record of the certificate, but rather give particulars concerning persons to whom certificates of naturalisation were issued, including the annual number of the certificate, age, ship by which the person arrived and year of arrival, place of residence at the time the certificate was granted, and the date of the certificate. Investigation has shown that the personal details relating to recipients of certificates of naturalisation cannot be totally relied upon; in particular, in many cases, details of the name of the ship and the year of arrival have proved to be erroneous. The Letters of Denization for the period 1834 to 1847 (series 3.7.1 above) are located at the beginning of the first reel, Reel 128A. Indexes These registers are indexed in the Naturalization index (series 3.7.2 above) and State Records' Website. In addition, an index is located at the front of each volume.

* In producing the Blue Books in the microfiche format, when more than one Blue Book for a particular year is held in State Records, the Blue Books were compared. The microfiche edition in these cases is often a composite from the extant volumes in order to produce as complete a set of returns as possible for each year. 3.9.7 Public Service Lists, 1858-70, NRS 1286 (Fiche 807-819) 13 microfiche This series is a continuation of the relevant part of the previous series. From 1858 to 1861 the statistical Returns of the Colony (Blue Books), contained a section listing members of the Executive Council, Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly; officers of the Civil Establishments, by department; an Ecclesiastical Return arranged by church; a return of pensions paid; and a list of foreign consuls. This section has been extracted from the Returns of the Colony and filmed in this series under the title Public Service Lists.
