This w ould extend from the existing rail line on an elevated viaduct crossing the M 8 m otorw ay and term inating at a new term inal station located next to the existing airport car park. The 9km of existing track betw een Shields Junction and Paisley G ilm our Street station w as to be upgraded by adding a third bi-directional relief line increasing overall route capacity. Tw o new platform s w ould also be built in Central Station accessed through the existing arch by extending platform 11a. The new rail link w ould provide a dedicated train service w ith a journey tim e of approx. 15 m inutes. O n the 17th Septem ber 2009 G ARL w as cancelled by the Scottish G overnm ent due to budget cuts. How ever the line upgrade betw een Shields Junction and Paisley G ilm our Street station w as still to go ahead along w ith the tw o new platform s in G lasgow Central. This RailW orks sim ulation is based in the year 2012 as if the project had gone ahead as originally planned. 1.2 The Route The journey begins at G lasgow C entral Station w here w e have m odelled the term inus in great detail including the tw o new platform s 12 and 13 that are accessible through the arch. The com plex track w ork has been carefully reproduced along w ith catenary spans and signal gantry placem ent. The line leaves Central Station to the W est past Shields Electric Traction Depot. This is w here the new C lass 380 trains w ill be stabled and serviced. The line betw een Shields D epot and Paisley G ilm our Street handles passenger services to Ayrshire (Ayr, Largs & Ardrossan) and Inverclyde (G ourock & W em yss Bay) and has been constructed w ith the capacity increased for the additional G lasgow Airport service. To achieve this additional capacity a bi-directional relief line has been added betw een the existing Up and D ow n lines from Shields Junction through to the re-m odelled Arkleston Junction, East of Paisley. The existing Up and Dow n lines have also been signalled for bi-directional w orking. At Paisley G ilm our Street the line splits for Ayrshire services and continues N orthw est for Inverclyde and G lasgow Airport traffic, the proposed Airport Junction is located shortly afterw ards just prior to Paisley St Jam es Station. This Airport Spur is of double track design and is elevated on a new 1.9km viaduct that extends over St Jam es playing fields and the M 8 m otorw ay term inating at the futuristic G lasgow International Airport Station. The Airport Link journey from G lasgow should take approx. 15 m inutes w ith one stop at Paisley G ilm our Street. • Birdwatching in Ayrshire and Arran
Birdwatching in Ayrshire and Arran Note on the on-line edition: The original leaflet (shown on the right) was published in 2003 by the Ayrshire Branch of the SOC and was so popular that the 20,000 print run is now gone. We have therefore published this updated edition on-line to ensure people interested in Ayrshire’s birds (locals and visitors) can find out the best locations to watch our birds. To keep the size of the document to a minimum we have removed the numerous photographs that were in the original. The on- line edition was first published in November 2005. Introduction This booklet is a guide to the best birding locations in Ayrshire and Arran. It has been produced by the Ayrshire branch of the SOC with help from individuals, local organisations and authorities. It should be used in conjunction with our website (www.ayrshire-birding.org.uk) which gives extra details. Additions and corrections can be reported via the website. The defining influences on Ayrshire as an environment for birds and other wildlife are its very long coast-line (135km not counting islands), and the fact that it lies almost entirely in the rift valley between the Highland Boundary Fault and the Southern Upland Fault. Exceptions to this generally lowland character are the mountains of north Arran, our own little bit of the Highlands, and the moorlands and hills of the south and south-east fringes of the county. The mild climate has resulted in a mainly pastoral agriculture and plenty of rivers and lochs, making it good for farmland and water birds.
