Quite a rarity these days! Too much reflection and waffling on whether or not the actions they're taking are right and the book generally becomes painfully dull, hard to read, and frustrating because the audience is placed in the position of condemning the characters. But she didn't make the journey alone. I was not going to pick this up, after the disappointments of the last X-Force runs. She keeps talking to someone in her head that she can't remember, rambling nonsense about how violence is like music. She was tortured, brain-washed, weaponized and forced to use her ability in the attacks. It reminds me of what Warren Ellis was trying to do back in the Counter-X days, but that never had a chance the whole Revolution thing crashed badly. And who the fuck cares about Marrow? Simon Spurrier. And this is just from the first issue! Call me cautiously optimistic about what might be in store for Vol. Disable this feature for this session. First, there is a lot of talking in this volume and Spurrier doesn't have a great handle on some of the characters on the team like Cable who could really be an generic superhero leader. How many stories do we know like Remender's that didn't work? X-Force Volume 1: Dirty Tricks Writer Mutantkind's protectors, spies, assassins and torturers - but what drove them to join this new, deadly incarnation of X-Force? Some very disturbed heroes but a good story. Was going to put 3 but what a pain yo read Meme, Volga and most of all, Fantomex and his "french" words. I think the problem here is that every nine months or so they are getting a new writer and no two seem to handle them quite the same. A bit hard to follow but overall very enjoyable. Call me cautiously optimistic about what might be in store for Vol. Oh man do I love Marrow. The whole Fantomex being kind of silly and love struck doesn't match well with what we got in the Remender run. Cable is even one of my favorite characters, yet I used to hate X-force. If you find this book remaindered in a dollar bin, save y The art at the beginning of this book is so ugly, and so reminiscent of the muddy-colored Hammer era Marvel Universe that I didn't initially notice that this was a Simon Spurrier book. His scripts seem to be overstuffed with too much incident and no simple throughline of plot, making them X-Force has been on a downward slide ever since Rick Remender left the book, and Simon Spurrier isn't the right person to end that slide. • Myth, Metatext, Continuity and Cataclysm in Dc Comics’ Crisis on Infinite Earths
WORLDS WILL LIVE, WORLDS WILL DIE: MYTH, METATEXT, CONTINUITY AND CATACLYSM IN DC COMICS’ CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS Adam C. Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal.

As low as hes ever been, can he really rise to the challenge Landau, Luckman, and Lake have set up for him? Deadpool Classic 3 covers some of the earliest solo comics by the Merc with the mouth. First, the series could never get a steady artist. The drawings therefore are all over the place from very basic to a bit overblown. These initial issues were never really known for the drawings anyway.Sadly the stories are all over the place like the art. In fact issue #11 is a real low point. Deadpool travels through time and inserts himself into Spider-Man #47. The comic is utterly boring. It’s almost all dialogue between Peter Parker and his friends. Eventually Kraven appears but the action take so long to develop there’s no payoff. It is by far the worst Deadpool ever. To complete the circle they included the original Spider- Man at the end.In the bigger picture there are four main themes going on.

CREATING A SUPERHEROINE: A RHETORICAL ANALYSIS OF THE X-MEN COMIC BOOKS by Tonya R. Powers A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree MASTER OF ARTS Major Subject: Communication West Texas A&M University Canyon, Texas August, 2016 Approved: __________________________________________________________ [Chair, Thesis Committee] [Date] __________________________________________________________ [Member, Thesis Committee] [Date] __________________________________________________________ [Member, Thesis Committee] [Date] ____________________________________________________ [Head, Major Department] [Date] ____________________________________________________ [Dean, Fine Arts and Humanities] [Date] ____________________________________________________ [Dean, Graduate School] [Date] ii ABSTRACT This thesis is a rhetorical analysis of a two-year X-Men comic book publication that features an entirely female cast. This research was conducted using Kenneth Burke’s theory of terministic screens to evaluate how the authors and artists created the comic books. Sonja Foss’s description of cluster criticism is used to determine key terms in the series and how they were contributed to the creation of characters. I also used visual rhetoric to understand how comic book structure and conventions impacted the visual creation of superheroines. The results indicate that while these superheroines are multi- dimensional characters, they are still created within a male standard of what constitutes a hero. The female characters in the series point to an awareness of diversity in the comic book universe. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I wish to thank my thesis committee chair, Dr. Hanson, for being supportive of me within the last year. Your guidance and pushes in the right direction has made the completion of this thesis possible. You make me understand the kind of educator I wish to be. You would always reply to my late-night emails as soon as you could in the morning.

  • LORD of the NIGHT Simon Spurrier
A WARHAMMER 40,000 NOVEL LORD OF THE NIGHT Simon Spurrier Simon Spurrier «Lord of the Night» IT IS THE 41st millennium. For more than a hundred centuries the Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the master of mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die. YET EVEN IN his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon‐infested miasma of the warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperorʹs will. Vast armies give battle in his name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst his soldiers are the Adcptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio‐engineered super‐warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever‐vigilant Inquisition and the tech‐priests of the Adeptus Mcchanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever‐present threat from aliens, heretics, mutants ‐ and worse. To BE A man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruellest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re‐learned.
