Robot Design:10% Compete on a table-top playing field ● Project : Teams research a real world problem and are challenged to develop a solution. Kids Learn : Basic programming using EV3 Lego Mindstorm software (functions, loops, etc..) , Different sensors (color, touch, gyro, ultrasonic) and their use in the real world 2018/2019 season : Into Orbit - explore, challenge, and innovate in the vast expanse of space. FLL FLL FIRST Qualifiers Regionals Championship Oct-Nov Dec April 400-500 league teams, 120 At LEGOLAND : 2 of 120 teams Season finale with teams from move to regionals selected for FIRST 70+ countries competing Grades: 4-8 Championship against each other Time commitment : 2-3 hrs a week from June - Sept. 5-6 hrs per week in October. When/Where : Coach’s availability Cost : $150 - $200 per kid for entire season (Qualifiers & Regionals). Championship requires travel & accommodation. Robotics : First Lego League Jr ● Each Year a real world problem/Challenge is released by FIRST team in month of August, to be solved by research, critical thinking and imagination. ● Challenge has two parts, the LEGO Model and the Show Me Poster. ○ SHOW ME POSTER-Requires teams to illustrate their research and team journey. ○ MODEL-The Model gets teams moving! Teams build a representation of what they are researching, based off the Challenge, and incorporate simple machines and movement into their creation. ● FLL Jr. event: In Jan-Feb, teams register for an exhibition at Legoland where volunteer reviewers interview the teams to learn about their LEGO Model and Show Me poster. ● 2018/2019 season = MISSION MOON ○ You and your team will transport to a place where you make the rules, learn to thrive in a new environment, and explore all that is around you. ● Grades: TK -3: Working in teams of 2 to 6 with 2 adult coaches ● Time Commitment: ~ 2 hrs a week, for 3 months ● When/Where: Coach’s availability, school/coach’s/team members residence ● Cost : ~ $100 to $150 per kid, depending on Field trip, T-shirt and other Misc expenses Run39 - Run39 is D39C’s fun-filled volunteer-driven running club - Enables kids to get some exercise before school by running laps around school playground. - We track attendance and scan laps completed. Motivational awards given for achieving milestones. - Grades : TK-8 (split into 3 running groups : TK-1, 2-5, 6-8) - When: Wednesdays and Fridays - 8-8:30 AM (before school). Main gate open for entry from 7:50-8:00 AM - Where: School Playground Run39 Student Achievements during 2017-18 year! ** D39C School goal achieved : 5622 miles during the year!! (distance from SD to NYC and back) ** 75 runners completed the marathon (26.2 miles) milestone! ** Among the above, 36 runners went on to complete the 100K milestone! ** 10 runners clocked 120 miles or more.. close to 2.25 miles every run! Odyssey of the Mind ● What is it: A creativity and problem solving competition, here’s an intro video: https://youtu.be/cWHP64kUhWc ● Typical student activities: Students work in teams of 5-7 to create solutions with skits (for the primary, car, robot, classics, balsa wood or drama problems) that will be judged at a regional tournament held in early March. They will also solve a Spontaneous problem on-the-spot! ● Goals: Improve creativity and problem solving, inspire teamwork, gain leadership and self-reliance, learn how to adhere to a budget, get confidence performing in front of others, practice thinking on your feet ● Commitment: Usually once a week from October to March ● When/Where: Location and meeting time depends on the team coaches ● Grade span: K-8 (Primary: K-2nd, Division 1: 3rd-5th, Division 2: 6th-8th) ● Info Night Date & Time: Prospective coach info night on Wed., Sept. 12 at 6pm in the Showcase (tentative location). ● Next steps: We are collecting coach interest, problem preferences and available meeting times here: http://goo.gl/3hese8 ● Questions: Email [email protected] Mandarin (NEW this year) After school Mandarin Language and Culture Program LEARN about Mandarin Language and Culture LOVE of Language and Culture Program - Design 39 Campus Commitment MORE than 1x per week, out of pocket, pricing TBD/competitive with similar programs ON Design 39 Campus / Specific rooms will be reserved INCLUSIVE Heritage and Non-heritage learners / Spans will be based on demand GRATIS trial period in SEPTEMBER and then paid formation of classes October, quarterly Speech & Debate Students develop skills in research, critical thinking, organization, persuasion and communication. Speech and debate students see tangible benefits from participation while in school – confidence in speaking situations, spontaneity in interviews, improved writing in other courses, diverse perspectives. ● When/Where : Monday’s 3:30 - 4:30 p.m @ School ● Grades : Grades 5th - 8th ● Class taught by amazing Del Norte HS Speech & Debate rockstars! ● Annual Speech & Debate Showcase: Compete with Oak Valley Middle School - May 2019 at DNHS ○ Club is evaluating additional competitions this year Math Club [email protected] Math Club is for 2nd - 8th graders to enhance their math problem solving skills beyond the classroom setting and compete with other students nationally. Typical student activities Solving math problems in the form of practice or competition Grades 2-3 practice Noetic questions. Grades 4 and above practice Math Olympiad problems. Club competitions 2 Noetic Contests (2nd & 3rd) Fall and Spring Monthly Math Olympiad Contests (4th-8th) Mathcounts Competitions (6th-8th) - School, SD Chapter (top 10), and if advance, State & National AMC 8 (6th-8th) Time commitment Students: 1 hour every Tuesday Morning 7.30-8.30 AM, Oct 2018 - Apr 2019 (Get up EARLY!!!!) Coaches: 2 hours per week. 1 hour coaching and up to 1 hour of preparation. Math Club Info Night 7:30-8:30 PM Monday Sept 10, 2018, Showcase Quiz Bowl ❖ A quiz competition that tests players on a wide variety of academic subjects including history, literature, science, fine arts, current events, sports, popular culture, and more. It is similar to a team version of Jeopardy. ❖ Goals: Develop critical thinking skills and improve public speaking ❖ Student Benefits: Curiosity, Commitment, and Teamwork ❖ Competitions: 3-4 around Southern California. Nationals in Chicago, IL ❖ When: 3:15 - 4:30 on Wednesdays. Extra practice outside of class. From September to May. ❖ Grade Span: 5th - 8th grade ❖ Questions?: Email [email protected] Science Field Day ● Opportunity for kids to explore, build and have fun with foundational science concepts- hands on experience ● Primary goal : develop a positive attitude towards science, technology,engineering and math (STEM) ● Program, designed, organized and administered by elementary teachers from throughout San Diego County. ● Competition held in the spring - brings students together in one location to compete in various events. ● Event Date: Saturday, May 18, 2019 ● Coaching starts January/February 2019 Science Field Day- participation details ● Students in grades 4, 5 and 6 compete in 15 science related events on the field day. ● At Competition, each student will participate in 2/3 events. ○ In addition, many non-competitive events go on throughout the day making a festival atmosphere. ● Teams consist of up to 16 participants and 2 alternates. ● Sixth grade is limited to 4 participants. ● Teams may enter
