FLL FLL FIRST Qualifiers Regionals Championship

400-500 league teams, 120 At LEGOLAND : 2 of 120 teams Season finale with teams from move to regionals selected for FIRST 70+ countries competing Grades: 4-8 Championship against each other Time commitment : 2-3 hrs a week from June - Sept. 5-6 hrs per week in October. When/Where : Coach’s availability Cost : $150 - $200 per kid for entire season (Qualifiers & Regionals). Championship requires travel & accommodation. Robotics : First Lego League Jr ● Each Year a real world problem/Challenge is released by FIRST team in month of August, to be solved by research, critical thinking and imagination. ● Challenge has two parts, the LEGO Model and the Show Me Poster. ○ SHOW ME POSTER-Requires teams to illustrate their research and team journey. ○ MODEL-The Model gets teams moving! Teams build a representation of what they are researching, based off the Challenge, and incorporate simple machines and movement into their creation. ● FLL Jr. event: In Jan-Feb, teams register for an exhibition at Legoland where volunteer reviewers interview the teams to learn about their LEGO Model and Show Me poster. ● 2018/2019 season = MISSION MOON ○ You and your team will transport to a place where you make the rules, learn to thrive in a new environment, and explore all that is around you. ● Grades: TK -3: Working in teams of 2 to 6 with 2 adult coaches ● Time Commitment: ~ 2 hrs a week, for 3 months ● When/Where: Coach’s availability, school/coach’s/team members residence ● Cost : ~ $100 to $150 per kid, depending on Field trip, T-shirt and other Misc expenses Run39

- Run39 is D39C’s fun-filled volunteer-driven running club - Enables kids to get some exercise before school by running laps around school playground. - We track attendance and scan laps completed. Motivational awards given for achieving milestones. - Grades : TK-8 (split into 3 running groups : TK-1, 2-5, 6-8) - When: Wednesdays and Fridays - 8-8:30 AM (before school). Main gate open for entry from 7:50-8:00 AM - Where: School Playground

Run39 Student Achievements during 2017-18 year!

** D39C School goal achieved : 5622 miles during the year!! (distance from SD to NYC and back)

** 75 runners completed the marathon (26.2 miles) milestone!

** Among the above, 36 runners went on to complete the 100K milestone!

** 10 runners clocked 120 miles or more.. close to 2.25 miles every run! Odyssey of the Mind ● What is it: A creativity and problem solving competition, here’s an intro video: https://youtu.be/cWHP64kUhWc ● Typical student activities: Students work in teams of 5-7 to create solutions with skits (for the primary, car, robot, classics, balsa wood or drama problems) that will be judged at a regional tournament held in early March. ● Opportunity for kids to explore, build and have fun with foundational science concepts- hands on experience ● Primary goal : develop a positive attitude towards science, technology,engineering and math (STEM) ● Program, designed, organized and administered by elementary teachers from throughout County. ● Competition held in the spring - brings students together in one location to compete in various events. ● Event Date: Saturday, May 18, 2019 ● Coaching starts January/February 2019 Science Field Day- participation details

● Students in grades 4, 5 and 6 compete in 15 science related events on the field day. ● At Competition, each student will participate in 2/3 events. ○ In addition, many non-competitive events go on throughout the day making a festival atmosphere. ● Teams consist of up to 16 participants and 2 alternates. ● Sixth grade is limited to 4 participants. ● Teams may enter 1 participant in an event if necessary, ○ except: Mirror Magic (3), Triathlon. Cross Country is a running team offered to 5th - 8th graders : (all abilities welcome)

Goal: Encourage healthy activity, strengthen confidence, and make friends through running

Commitment: We will practice and/or compete 2 times a week.

Jumpstart to Strings : introductory music program where students learn to play an instrument of their choosing (violin, viola or cello) and develop technical skills. Bridge to Orchestra : students are brought together in an orchestral setting where they learn the basics of playing in an ensemble.

Goal: Teach students various instruments and spark an interest in music. Commitment: ● Jumpstart to Strings : Once a week from October to February ● Bridge to Orchestra :Once a week from March to June When/Where: ● Jumpstart to Strings: varies based on student and mentor availability; ● Bridge to Orchestra : Friday afternoons from 4-5 PM in the music room at Design39Campus Grade span: 4th-8th grade Info Night Date & Time: September 15th 5:00-5:30 PM in the Showcase (upon school approval) Science Olympiad(SO) To promote learning and participation in Science & Technology ❖ SO : nationally organized academic/hands-on program designed to expose kids to and get them excited about STEM. ❖ Grades : 5th to 8th grade ❖ Teams of 15 students work together to compete in 23 events - Events cover all aspects of science - Events are either study, lab or build - 2 or 3 students per event - Each student does 3-4 events ❖ Teamwork is essential ❖ Compete against other San Diego middle schools in February (Div B) - Top 20 teams are placed in each event - Top 8 schools will be advanced to State competition - Only 1 team per school for State Science Olympiad

Water Quality Science Olympiad (2017-18 8th Regional, 19th State) Cyber Patriot

CyberPatriot National Youth Cyber Education Program was created by the Air Force Association to inspire students toward careers in cybersecurity or other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to our nation's future. At the core of the CyberPatriot program is the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, which challenges teams of students to resolve real-life cyber security situations in a virtual environment.

Goal: Allow students to explore and gain interest/knowledge in cybersecurity. Commitment: 3-5 hours per week July - March Where/When: Meet at D39C Campus. Friday 4-6pm Summer months outside of D39C Grade span: 6-8th grade in a team of 2-6 students. Up to 5 teams per school Competition: November - March. Once a month- 6 hours on weekend. D39C partnered with CyberAegis to train D39C students along with students from Oak Valley Middle School and Del Norte High School.

Goal: Students will be placed in competitive teams to participate CyberPatriot competition and other local and state competition and lead students to CyberPatriot National Finals. Commitment: 4-6 hours per week Where/When: Meeting at Northrop Grumman. Sunday 1:30-5:30pm. Tryout: May/June 2019 Grade span: 7 & 8th grade in a team of 2-6 students Part of D39C CyberPatriot school team Competition: November - April. Once a month 6 hours on weekend.
