Mill Valley Recreation By: Kat Reisinger

“You say that you love your children…And are concerned that they learn today…As am I, that's why I'm providing…A variety of kinds of play.” In answer to NAEYC’s poem “The Value of Play,” Mill Valley Recreation has been busy providing a springtime full of play for all ages.

Earth Day In Mill Valley With a plethora of activities throughout the month of April, the Mill Valley community came together on April 25th to celebrate “It’s My Park!” – a beautification day where individuals of all ages helped clean two neighborhood parks by picking up litter, pulling weeds, painting signs, planting trees and native vegetation all while enjoying the outdoors and taking ownership over their community.

Starduster Dances Slip into your dancing shoes and kick up your heels one Tuesday a month as the Mill Valley Seniors Club welcome the Starduster Orchestra for an evening full of dancing and fun. The Orchestra is a traditional big band playing music from all periods, they specialize in swing and dance music from the 30’s, 40’s & 50’s. The excitement of their music compels audiences from eighteen to eights to get up and dance!

Sustainable Sports Marathon Spring welcomed Mill Valley Recreation’s 3rd year of its partnership with the Sustainable Sports Foundation of Marin, the sponsor for our swim lesson scholarship program which has reached over 35 families in Southern and Central Marin providing high quality swim instruction to children. To qualify, all scholarship recipients volunteer for one large event. This day is always fun and provides children and families with an opportunity to get outdoors, see athletes compete and give back to their community.

Mill Valley LIVE – Illusionist and Magician Brian Scott A crowd of young and old laughed at and with Brian Scott on April 26th during the final installation of our Spring Mill Valley LIVE series where families gathered at the community center from 11:00 – 12:00 to make Sunday a FUNday! Being described as a mix of one part Elvis impersonation, two parts goof, and the facial expressions of Jim Carrey, Brian had families laughing, scratching their head in wonder, and being just outright amazed.

All in all, spring has been an exciting time. Mill Valley staff and community alike are gearing up and excited for a great summer of fun!

Town of Windsor Parks and Recreation By: Olivia Lemen

Windsor is planning for the future! With growth and development on the horizon and a General Plan Update underway, the department launched a Parks and Recreation Master Plan Update in the fall of 2014. Your Voice! Your Parks! Your Future! is the theme of our campaign to solicit input while planning the future of Parks and Recreation Services in Windsor. After over 10,000 phone calls, numerous community meetings and workshops, Council interviews, an on-line survey and staff contributions – the Windsor Parks 2030 Master Plan is almost complete! Master Plan consultants Gate + Associates of San Ramon will have the first draft to staff to review by summer. It is anticipated that the Parks and Recreation Commission will review and recommend for adoption by Town Council this fall. As we are also in the biennial budget cycle, it has been exciting to see very consistent immerging areas of interest which we can plan for right out of the gate. Visit our Master Plan website at www.windsorparks2030.com

In conjunction with this Master Planning process, the Town hired Geographic Technologies Group from North Carolina to engage in an innovating geodatabase project called GreenCityGIS. The project establishes an inventory of every town owned park, amenity, facility and tree and then creates a complex layer of maps which can be utilized by the public and staff to display all that the town has to offer. Eventually, when the Town switches to our new registration software it will sync and allow staff to see program utilization and saturation as it relates to location and census data. GreenCityGIS also has an Operation Dashboard feature to be used by the Park and Facility maintenance staff which will track the condition of any Town asset in real time and allow staff in the field to update on-the-spot as issues are identified and addressed.

The Greater Vallejo Recreation District

BattleBots is back — and will be filming new episodes in Vallejo in May, a show producer and the city’s film liaison said Friday.

“It’s been 12 years since the Bot last fought, and they’ve upgraded, improved, re-designed and re-imagined their fighting machines,” o-producer Greg Munson said. “So this will be off-the-charts amazing and an incredible display of engineering prowess and genius technology.”

Vallejo’s film liaison Jim Reikowsky said. The episodes, produced by ABC, will be filmed at the Mare Island Sports Center over Memorial Day weekend.

An extensive search for the perfect venue for filming the show landed producers in Vallejo.

“I got a call from them, and they were looking literally all over the state, and I sent them to Lennar Mare Island, who sent them to the GVRD,” Reikowsky said.

“After 12 years, BattleBots has been picked up by ABC and we’re super excited,” Munson said. “We searched high and low for a suitable venue — in Southern California and Northern California — and the best one turned out to be in our back yard.”

The Mare Island Sports Center is “a great building with enough square footage for everything we need,” he said. “We’re going to do three days of robot fighting, metal munching mayhem starting May 21 though Saturday May 23.”

Those in the audience are likely to wind up on TV, so dress to impress, he said.

This type of operation coming to town is always good for the city — helping fill its coffers and displaying its assets as a possible backdrop for future filming, Reikowsky said.

“The entire crew will be staying in town, and that’s a significant number of room nights for Vallejo,” he said. “I think most important will be the publicity. But also, some of the crew are coming at the beginning of May and the rest in mid-May, and that’s a significant stay. They’ll be staying in our hotels, eating in our restaurants, spending money, and that’s what economic development is all about.”

The TOT — or Transient Occupancy Tax — charged to all overnight hotel guests goes to the city, though the Greater Vallejo Recreation District will be paid for the Sports Center’s use.

GVRD General Manager Shane McAffee said the $40,000 rental fee will likely help the agency break even on the deal, but the potential for future deals makes it worthwhile. Plus, it’s a cool show, he said.

“They’re paying a rental fee of about $40,000 for a month of use,” he said. “They’ll be filming for three days, but they have to set things up, and take it down and so on.”
