We are getting to the point where we don’t have to interact with people in the physical: e-mail, instant messaging, texting, tweeting, and social networking. Are we having real conversations? There is no intonation in an e-mail or text message. Doesn’t intonation, body language, and facial expressions make up half of the experience in a conversation? Merriam-Webster defines “conversation” as such: oral exchange of Western civilization has been captivated by the electronic sentiments, observations, opinions, or ideas. -

He studied scenery and lighting design, as well as set design for television and film. Starting in 1965 he taught set and stage design in the UCLA Department of Theater Arts, now the UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television, and continued to be involved as a professor emeritus until his death. This collection is comprised of his papers, including research and reference materials, correspondence, notes, teaching materials, slides and photographs, theater floor plans and architectural data, lighting placement charts, and data from Crabs' survey of Californian theater facilities. Additional materials include notebooks with plans for lighting placement and staging and fabric samples for acoustic design. The collection also includes materials related to his research trip to China and reference materials on Chinese theater and performance, and the original survey data Crabs used to compile a database of California theaters. -

Cassius Carter Centre Stage Darlene Gould Davies Cassius Carter Centre Stage, that old and trusted friend, is gone. The theatre in the round at The Old Globe complex in Balboa Park had its days, and they were glorious. Who can forget “Charlie’s Aunt” (1970 and 1977), or the hilarious 1986 pro- duction of “Beyond the Fringe”? Was there ever a show in the Carter that enchanted audiences more than “Spoon River Anthology” (1969)? A. R. Gurney’s “The Din- ing Room” (1983) was delightful. Craig Noel’s staging of Alan Ayckbourn’s ultra- comedic trilogy “The Norman Conquests” (1979) still brings chuckles to those who remember. San Diegans will remember the Carter. It was a life well lived. Cassius Carter Centre Stage, built in 1968 and opened in early 1969, was di- rectly linked to the original Old Globe Theatre of the 1935-36 California-Pacific International Exposition in Balboa Park. It was not a new building but a renovation of Falstaff Tavern that sat next to The Old Globe.1 In fact, until Armistead Carter Falstaff Tavern ©SDHS, UT #82:13052, Union-Tribune Collection. Darlene Gould Davies has served on several San Diego City boards and commissions under five San Diego mayors, is Professor Emerita of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at San Diego State University, and co-produced videos for the Mingei International Museum. The Restaurant Taste will be located in the Palisades Parking lot adjacent to the Hall of Champions and a synthetic ice skating rink will also be located in the Palisades Parking Lot. The Plaza De Panama will host a spirits garden, and the Moreton Bay Fig Tree will be up-lighted. Shannon Sweeney representing Scott White Contemporary Art reported that the location approved by the Committee for the Bernar Venet sculpture requires a barrier to be placed around it for ADA compliance. Ms. Sweeney stated the barrier would detract from the sculpture and requested that the Committee reconsider placing the sculpture at the original requested location on the turf east of the San Diego Museum of Art. -

This site is to Cables/Connectors be used as an additional source of information for the Introduction to Stage Entertainment Industry Lighting course held at Valencia Community College, East Campus taught by Creative Design for Theatre Sonia Pasqual. Lighting History & Intensity Control The course syllabus and calendar for the current semester is available via Lighting Design the course homepage or you can download the file from below. Basic Stagecraft If you choose to download it from your atlas account go to the course Additional Information homepage for the Introduction to Stage Lighting section which you are in now, TPA 2220. You can download it at anytime to view, there will be a hard copy of the lighting syllabus outside my office door for anyone needing to view it if they are on campus and can not access atlas. The information gathered on this site is produced by Sonia Pasqual. All other information has been credited to its source and is only used as a visual aid for my students. Sonia has been involved in the art of theatre and entertainment since 1992. Her knowledge and information comes from her experience and growing up in the theatre world. She has worked in theatres across the Greater Central Florida, North Florida, and New York City. Her work and experience also extends into the theme parks such as Universal Studios 97-99, and Walt Disney World 04-Present, while at Disney she has played several roles. -

A LIVELY THEatRE There’s a revolution afoot in theatre design, believes architectural consultant RICHARD PILBROW, that takes its cue from the three-dimensional spaces of centuries past The 20th century has not been a good time for theatre architecture. In the years from the 1920s to the 1970s, the world became littered with overlarge, often fan-shaped auditoriums that are barren in feeling and lacking in intimacy--places that are seldom conducive to that interplay between actor and audience that lies at the heart of the theatre experience. Why do theatres of the 19th century feel so much more “theatrical”? And why do so many actors and audiences prefer the old to the new? More generally, does theatre architecture really matter? There are some that believe that as soon as the house lights dim, the audience only needs to see and hear what happens on the stage. Perhaps audiences don’t hiss, boo and shout during a performance any more, but most actors and directors know that an audience’s reaction critically affects the performance. The nature of the theatre space, the configuration of the audience and the intimacy engendered by the form of the auditorium can powerfully assist in the formation of that reaction. A theatre auditorium may be a dead space or a lively one. Theatres designed like cinemas or lecture halls can lay a dead hand on the theatre experience. Happily, the past 20 years have seen a revolution in attitude to theatre design. No longer is a theatre only a place for listening or viewing. -

Photo: Steve Tanner WELCOME 2016 – a momentous year – in which the world celebrated the richness of Shakespeare’s legacy 400 years after his death. Shakespeare’s Globe is proud to have played a part in those celebrations in 197 countries and led the festivities in London, where Shakespeare wrote and worked. Our Globe to Globe Hamlet tour travelled 193,000 miles before coming home for a final emotional performance in the Globe to mark the end, not just of this phenomenal worldwide journey, but the artistic handover from Dominic Dromgoole to Emma Rice. A memorable season of late Shakespeare plays in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse and two outstanding Globe transfers in the West End ran concurrently with the last leg of the Globe to Globe Hamlet tour. On Shakespeare’s birthday, 23 April, we welcomed President Obama to the Globe. Actors performed scenes from the late plays running in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Southwark Cathedral, a service which was the only major civic event to mark the anniversary in London and was attended by our Patron, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh. -
