Autonomist Marxist Theory and Practice in the Current Crisis Brian Marks1 University of Arizona School of Geography and Development [email protected] Abstract Autonomist Marxism is a political tendency premised on the autonomy of the proletariat. Working class autonomy is manifested in the self-activity of the working class independent of formal organizations and representations, the multiplicity of forms that struggles take, and the role of class composition in shaping the overall balance of power in capitalist societies, not least in the relationship of class struggles to the character of capitalist crises. Class composition analysis is applied here to narrate the recent history of capitalism leading up to the current crisis, giving particular attention to China and the United States. A global wave of struggles in the mid-2000s was constituitive of the kinds of working class responses to the crisis that unfolded in 2008-10. The circulation of those struggles and resultant trends of recomposition and/or decomposition are argued to be important factors in the balance of political forces across the varied geography of the present crisis. The whirlwind of crises and the autonomist perspective The whirlwind of crises (Marks, 2010) that swept the world in 2008, financial panic upon food crisis upon energy shock upon inflationary spiral, receded temporarily only to surge forward again, leaving us in a turbulent world, full of possibility and peril. In the quest to identify the ‘birth of the prison’, – in Michel Foucault’s memorable phrase – efforts have concentrated instead on the establishment of the modern penitentiary as a symbol of European modernity.1 While debates continue about the motives for the birth of the prison, it is agreed that by the nineteenth century European nations shared an ideological commitment to replacing corporal punishment with rehabilitation through education, work, and religion in healthy and orderly institutions. European penal reformers contrasted their liberal and humanitarian vision, intended to mould useful citizens, to the supposedly backward and brutal methods of retribution that characterized the purportedly less civilized continents of Asia, Africa and Latin America. Even the transportation of convicts from European nations to their colonies has remained, until recently, more central to the histories of the non-Western world than to Europe itself. Thus a simplistic duality has marked the historiography of punishment, one that identifies the modern penitentiary with Europe (and North America) and the penal colony with the rest of the globe.

Ključne besede: biografija, zgodovinopisje, primorski Slovenci, Italija, fašizem, antifa- šizem, Primorska ABSTRACT MILICA KACIN WOHINZ The article is dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Slovene historian Milica Kacin Wohinz (born in Cerkno, on October 12, 1930). Mrs Kacin Wohinz's research work focused on the history of the Slovene Primorska region (and Venezia Giulia region in Italy) in the period from the end of World War I to the beginning of World War II. In her publications (among them are three large monographs and numerous articles in Slovene and in particular in Italian) she dealt primarily with the status of the Slovene ethnic community during the period of Italian occupation (1918-1921) and also during the period after the Venezia Giulia region was made a part of the Kingdom of Italy. Italy's attitude to the Slovenes was shaped by Fascism and its denationalisation policy.

ABSTRACT THE BASOVIZZA MONUMENT: REBRANDING PUBLIC MEMORY, CONSTRUCTING IDENTITY, AND NORMALIZING POLITICAL AGENDA by Louise Zamparutti The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2018 Under the Supervision of Professor Rachel Spilka In the early 1990s, Italy’s former Fascist party, the newly renamed Alleanza Nazionale (AN), began to promote a new interpretation of events that occurred in the final stages of World War II. In collaboration with local and national civic organizations, the AN promoted this rendition of history by publishing fictionalized memoirs and popular narratives, producing a nationally aired television drama, and finalizing the construction of a new national monument. The Basovizza Monument was officially inaugurated on February 10, 2007, and is now a popular attraction for tourists and classroom visits.

  • Public History, Private Memories: Historical Imagination in the New Italian Cinema 1988-1999
NOTE This online version of the thesis has slightly different page formatting from the print version held in Griffith University Library. The content is otherwise exactly the same. Public History, Private Memories: Historical imagination in the New Italian cinema 1988-1999 Tiziana Ferrero-Regis 2003 Public History, Private Memories: Historical imagination in the New Italian cinema 1988-1999 Tiziana Ferrero-Regis B.A. (Honours) Film, Media and Cultural Studies, Griffith University Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy February, 2003 i Abstract The concern with the following arguments started during a study of national and international cinemas, from the desire to account for a cinema that internationally was doing well, but was undervalued domestically. The aims were to account for the renewal of Italian filmmaking from 1988, the New Italian cinema, and understand the conditions behind this renewal. The thesis identifies in the historical theme and in the recurrence of features from Italian cinema history elements of coherence with previous cinema production. The first consideration that emerges is that a triangulation between a new generation of filmmakers, their audience and recent history shaped the recovery of Italian cinema from 1988. A second consideration is that no discussion of Italian cinema can be separated from a discussion of that which it represents: Italian society and politics. This representation has not only addressed questions of identity for a cohort of spectators, but on occasions has captured the attention of the international audience. Thus the thesis follows a methodologic approach that positions the texts in relation to certain traditions in Italian filmmaking and to the context by taking into consideration also industrial factors and social and historical changes.

• Foibe Literature
Foibe literature: documentation or victimhood narrative? HUMAN REMAINS & VIOLENCE Louise Zamparutti University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee [email protected] Abstract This essay analyses the literature on the foibe to illustrate a political use of human remains. The foibe are the deep karstic pits in Istria and around Trieste where Yugoslavian Communist troops disposed of Italians they executed en masse during World War II. By comparing contemporary literature on the foibe to a selec- tion of archival reports of foibe exhumation processes it will be argued that the foibe literature popular in Italy today serves a political rather than informational purpose. Counterpublic theory will be applied to examine how the recent increase in popular foibe literature brought the identity of the esuli, one of Italy’s subaltern counterpublics, to the national stage. The paper argues that by employing the nar- rative structure of the Holocaust, contemporary literature on the foibe attempts to recast Italy as a counterpublic in the wider European public sphere, presenting Italy as an unrecognised victim in World War II. Key words: foibe, massacres, corpses, Communism, counterpublic, victimhood, Fascism Introduction The mass graves in the deep pit-caves known as thefoibe in the Istrian penin- sula and the Venezia Giulia region have received a large amount of attention in Italy since the end of the Cold War and the collapse of Yugoslavia. Information about their discovery and exhumation, however, is obscured by the ethno-political polemic surrounding how they should be memorialised. It is known that the foibe massacres occurred in two major waves, the first in the Istrian region in September and October 1943, and the second in and around Trieste immediately following Liberation in May 1945.

  • Good Italian” Origins, Contestations and Trajectories
Marauta 1 Marie Chantal Marauta April 12, 2019 Advisor: Professor Holly Case DUS: Professor Naoko Shibusawa Understanding the Myth of the “Good Italian” Origins, contestations and trajectories ABSTRACT The notion of the “Good Italian” has been ingrained in national historical narrative and has thus constructed popular notions of what it means to be “Italian” both domestically and internationally. Films like Rome, Open City (1945) and Life Is Beautiful (1997) demonstrate the idea that for the most part, Italians were a benevolent people who aided persecuted populations during the war, and the popularity of these mass mediums has heavily propagated this perspective. Moreover, Italian high school curriculums are more focused on the atrocities of the Nazis during the Second World War (WWII), and there is little education about the Italian army’s extreme brutality in their occupied territories (namely, Yugoslavia and certain regions in Africa). Consequently, this paper argues that this widespread notion of the universality of the “Good Italian” is extremely problematic and does not capture the complex nature of the Italian army’s role (and the complicity of the Italian population) during WWII. This thesis highlights the problematic nature of this notion through a comparison and contrast between popular media and political images of the “Good Italian,” and the brutal actions of General Mario Roatta and his soldiers in Italian-occupied territories in Croatia that present a contrast to the universality of this myth. When exploring Roatta, as well as Italian responsibility for war crimes, this essay primarily uses two (relatively) recently published texts: Laura Bordoni’s Il Caso Roatta (2017) and Alessandra Kersevan’s Lager Italiani: Pulizia Etnica E Campi Di Concentramento Fascisti per Civili Jugoslavi 1941-1943 (2008).
