One response to this is to place the learning experience within a context that clearly demonstrates a non-trivial application of the material, and which thereby provides a definite purpose for the mathematical tools under consid- eration. This neatly complements a requirement of mathematics syllabi (for example, Queensland Board of Senior Secondary School Studies, 2001), which are placing increasing emphasis on the ability of students to apply mathematical thinking to the task of modelling real situations. Success in this endeavour requires that a process for developing a mathematical model be taught explicitly (Galbraith & Clatworthy, 1991), and that sufficient opportu- nities are provided to students to engage them in that process so that when they are confronted by an apparently complex situation they have the think- ing and operational skills, as well as the disposition, to enable them to proceed. The modelling process can be seen as an iterative sequence of stages (not ) necessarily distinctly delineated) that convert a physical situation into a math- 1 ( ematical formulation that allows relationships to be defined, variables to be 0 2 l manipulated, and results to be obtained, which can then be interpreted and a n r verified as to their accuracy (Galbraith & Clatworthy, 1991; Mason & Davis, u o J 1991). The process is iterative because often, at this point, limitations, inac- s c i t curacies and/or invalid assumptions are identified which necessitate a m refinement of the model, or perhaps even a reassessment of the question for e h t which we are seeking an answer. -

Agricultural Sciences in Modern East Asia Abstract: Agriculture has more significance than the production of capital along. The cultivation of rice by men and the weaving of silk by women have been long regarded as the two foundational pillars of the civilization. However, agricultural activities in East Asia, having been built around such iconic relationships, came under great questioning and processes of negation during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as people began to embrace Western science and technology in order to survive. And yet, amongst many sub-disciplines of science and technology, a particular vein of agricultural science emerged out of technological and scientific practices of agriculture in ways that were integral to East Asian governance and political economy. What did it mean for indigenous people to learn and practice new agricultural sciences in their respective contexts? With this border-crossing theme, this panel seeks to identify and question the commonalities and differences in the political complication of agricultural sciences in modern East Asia. Lavelle’s paper explores that agricultural experimentation practiced by Qing agrarian scholars circulated new ideas to wider audience, regardless of literacy. Onaga’s paper traces Japanese sericultural scientists who adapted hybridization science to the Japanese context at the turn of the twentieth century. Lee’s paper investigates Chinese agricultural scientists’ efforts to deal with the question of rice quality in the 1930s. American Motherhood at the Intersection of Nature and Science, 1945-1975 Abstract: This panel explores how scientific and popular ideas about “the natural” and motherhood have impacted the construction and experience of maternal identities and practices in 20th century America. -

On The Possibility of a Global Political Community: The Enigma of ‘Small Local Differences’ within Humanity1 Heikki Patomäki Introduction Is anything like a global political community – and thereby ideals such as global democracy and justice – achievable? This is a key question not only for political theory but also for contemporary political practices. For instance, a call for global solidarity in the face of rapid global warming (UNDP 2007), which seems ever more urgent in 2017, assumes a shared planetary identity across the currently prevailing differences and divisions. It seems that there can be no solidarity without a common identity at some level of human being. Environmentalists maintain that all humans share an important thing in common, namely planet Earth and its sphere of life, to which we essentially belong. In contrast, many political realists believe that humans are essentially tribal beings, or at least will remain so in the foreseeable future. This belief may be grounded on anything from speculative philosophical accounts of the human nature to sociobiological theories 1 This paper has been in progress for a decade. I first wrote it in 2007 and presented it in a few conferences, workshops and the like, including the Calcutta Research Group Winter School in December 2007. That presentation led eventually to a limited-circulation publication “Is a Global Identity Possible? The Relevance of Big History to Self-Other Relations”, Refugee Watch, (13):36, 2010, pp.53-77. A couple of years later I used the last two sections of this paper in a revised form in “The Problems of Legitimation and Potential Conflicts in a World Political Community”, Cooperation & Conflict, (47):2, 2012, pp.239-59. -

Craig Wheeler, [email protected] August is a time astronomers devote to travel, meetings, and writing papers. This year, our routine is set 4-5 against the background of sad and frustrating wars and new terror alerts that have rendered our shampoo Calgary Meeting suspect. I hope that by the time this is published there is a return to what passes for normalcy and some Highlights glimmer of reason for optimism. In this summer season, the business of the Society, while rarely urgent, moves on. The new administration 6 under Executive Officer Kevin Marvel has smoothly taken over operations in the Washington office. The AAS Final transition to a new Editor-in-Chief of the Astrophysical Journal, Ethan Vishniac, has proceeded well, with Election some expectation that the full handover will begin earlier than previously planned. Slate The Society, under the aegis of the Executive Committee, has endorsed the efforts of Senators Mikulksi and Hutchison to secure $1B in emergency funding for NASA to make up for some of the costs of shuttle 6 return to flight and losses associated with hurricane Katrina. It remains to be seen whether this action 2007 AAS will survive the budget process. The Executive Committee has also endorsed a letter from the American Renewals Institute of Physics supporting educators in Ohio who are fending off an effort there to include intelligent design in the curriculum. 13 Interestingly, the primary in Connecticut was of relevance to the Society. -
