But this time, when the grind of airports, hotel rooms and suitcase-style living is over, America's First Couple of Song will just go home. Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme are on their last tour. After more than 40 years of schlepping their music and their shtick and their cute-lovebird image around the globe, the married couple and show- biz institution known simply as "Steve and Eydie" is coming off the road. Late last year, Lawrence, 68, and Gorme, 71, announced they would stop touring after concluding one final, nostalgic swing around the United States. They're ending an era by returning to places where they've attracted thousands in the past, like this suburban Long Island town. He discusses the changes in musical trends from the big bands and vocalists of the 1940s through rap and popular music today. The particularly emphasizes the 1950s and early 1960s as an era that produced the best popular music of all time with the greatest diversity until the drug culture of the mid- to late- 1960s ushered in a change. Berlin talks about the openness of the radio studio at KNUZ, which invited high school students to come in and watch the show, make requests, and contribute the occasional school cheer. He mentions the many artists that he brought to Houston‟s music venues such as the Plantation Ballroom, the City Auditorium, Music Hall, and Coliseum.
