This year, the city has chosen to honour the Franco-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle, famous for her sculptures of voluptuous, sensual female forms: Les Nanas. From July 1st to October 8th, 2017, visitors can enjoy a sculpture trail in and around Saint-Tropez’s iconic harbour and its immediate surroundings. This unique exhibition has been made possible thanks to the support and involvement of Jean-Pierre Tuveri, Mayor of Saint-Tropez, as well as Bloum Cardenas, Niki de Saint Phalle’s granddaughter. The exhibition is a sequel to the retrospective devoted to the artist at the Grand Palais in Paris in 2015, which attracted over 500,000 visitors. The town hall has asked the Galerie Mitterrand to play the role of advisor for the exhibition, given its artistic expertise and knowledge of the region. The gallery’s close ties to the region culminated in 2015 with the inauguration of a private sculpture park at the Domaine du Muy. Throughout the summer, visitors can enjoy a programme of films, conferences, and guided tours by experts around the exhibition. A catalogue on Niki de Saint Phalle will be published by Galerie Mitterrand especially for the occasion. This exhibition is organized by Galerie Mitterrand and made possible thanks to loans from the Niki Charitable Art Foundation and the generous support of our partners. 79 RUE DU TEMPLE 75003 PARIS - T +33 1 43 26 12 05 F +33 1 46 33 44 83 [email protected] WWW.GALERIEMITTERRAND.COM THE ARTWORKS ON DISPLAY AND THEIR LOCATION PLACE DE LA GARONNE : LES TOTEMS Niki de Saint Phalle Bird Head Totem, 2000 H 335 x 213 x 140 cm / H 132 x 84 x 55 in Large Yelling Man Totem, 2000 H 505 x 150 x 150 cm / H 199 x 59 x 59 inches Kingfisher Totem, 2000 H 307.3 x 137.2 x 127 cm / H 121 x 54 x 50 inches SÉNÉQUIER : CAT HEAD TOTEM Niki de Saint Phalle Cat Head Totem, 2000 H 335 x 213 x 140 cm / H 132 x 84 x 55 inches PARVIS DU MUSÉE DE l’ANNONCIADE : LES TROIS GRÂCES Niki de Saint Phalle Les Trois Grâces, 1995-2003 Dimensions variables / Variable dimensions Mosaïque de céramique et verre sur polyuréthane, millefiori, socle métal Ceramic and glass mosaic over polyurethane core, millefiori glass inserts, metal base PORT, À LA PLACE DE L’ANCIEN PHARE : LES BAIGNEURS Niki de Saint Phalle Les Baigneurs, circa 1983 Polyester, polyurethane paint H 300 x 300 x 300 cm / H 118 x 118 x 118 inches Edition of 2 + 1 EA JARDINS CHANEL : CLARICE AGAIN Niki de Saint Phalle Clarice Again, 1966-1967 Polyester peint / Painted polyester H 190 x 140 x 125 cm / H 74.8 x 55 x 49 inches Unique NIKI DE SAINT PHALLE Niki de Saint Phalle was born in 1930 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, and died in 2002 in California, United States. Niki de Saint Phalle is a Franco-American artist who began her career as a painter in 1950. Her work quickly moved towards assemblages, reliefs and sculpture. In 1961, she became a member of the Nouveaux Réalistes [New Realists] group alongside other key figures or signatories such as Pierre Restany, Yves Klein, Arman, Jean Tinguely, Daniel Spoerri, Mimmo Rotella, etc. The group advocated the direct appropriation of reality. Restany spoke of a ‘poetic recycling of urban, industrial and advertising reality’ (60/90. Trente ans de Nouveau Réalisme. La Différence, 1990, p. 76). Niki de Saint Phalle’s work has evolved over the years and may now be divided into three distinct periods. Tirs [Shooting pictures] from the early 1960s consisted of performances during which the artist and spectators shot with a rifle at assemblages of found objects and paint-filled polythene bags covered in plaster. From 1965 onward, appeared the round, voluptuous and sensual sculptures the artist called Nanas. Then her art moved to exterior spaces with her large, bright and colourful sculptures. Some of these monumental pieces were created in collaboration with Jean Tinguely. Examples of the artist’s exterior art include Le Cyclop [The Cyclops] in Milly-la-Forêt in 1969, La Fontaine Stravinsky [The Stravinsky Fountain] next to the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 1983 and the masterpiece to which she devoted the last twenty years of her life: Il Giardino dei Tarocchi [The Tarot Garden] in southern Tuscany (Italy), inaugurated in 1998. A large retrospective of her work was held at the Grand Palais in Paris in 2014 as well as at the Guggenheim Bilbao in 2016. LA GALERIE MITTERRAND Galerie Mitterrand (previously known as JGM Galerie) was founded in 1988 by Jean-Gabriel Mitterrand and encompasses two large spaces (approximately 400m2) in a privately-owned townhouse in Paris’ Marais district. For almost 30 years, it has predominantly showcased sculpture. Today, this special affinity for sculpture leads to exhibitions of works by established artists such as Niki de Saint Phalle, les Lalanne, Keith Sonnier, Peter Kogler, Tony Oursler, Allan McCollum, and as well as by young, emerging artists such as the Chapuisat brothers, Mark Handforth, Gary Webb, Rachel Feinstein. Over the years, Galerie Mitterrand has indeed developed profound expertise in the field of monumental sculpture. This has been manifested around the world through exhibitions in public spaces, and occasionally in museums. It is for this reason that the gallery was called upon by the Universal Exhibition of Shanghai in 2010, the City of Luxembourg in 2007, and the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts in Taiwan in 1988 to organize group exhibitions (Dubuffet, Takis, Soto, César…) and solo shows (Keith Haring). In 2014, Mitterrand and his son Edward dreamed of creating an outdoor sculpture exhibition space. One year later, the Domaine du Muy opened with an art trail of some forty works by contemporary artists from a host of different generations, movements, and schools of practice. The park itself lives and evolves through the regular renewal or continuity of its works and projects, some created specifically at the Domaine du Muy. Situated between Monaco, Marseille, and Aix-en-Provence, near St-Tropez and Nice, the Domaine du Muy is nestled between the Maures and Esterel Massifs. The Esterel’s Mediterranean forest of cork oaks and pines stretches out over several hundred hectares. With its secluded valley, pools, and wild spaces, the Domaine du Muy sets the works in a space of exceptional natural beauty for their presentation each year in the summer. With the Domaine du Muy, a sculpture park of more than ten hectares in the south of France, created with the collaboration of India Mahdavi (architect) and Louis Benech (landscaper), Galerie Mitterrand lays the first stone of a private place in France, surrounded by nature, dedicated to contemporary international sculpture. The inaugural exhibition was curated by Simon Lamunière who was in charge of Art Basel Unlimited until 2012. • Niki De Saint Phalle's International Workshop
Niki de Saint Phalle’s International Workshop Like the great cathedrals of Europe that inspired her work, Niki de Saint Phalle’s own monumental projects are the creation of both a singular vision and a collective ideal. Since the 1970s, she has collaborated with a team of artists, artisans, and other specialists whose own unique talents and fierce dedication were critical to the realization of many of her large-scale environmental gardens, parks, and public art projects. The building of Queen Califia’s Magical Circle is no exception and for the four individuals whose stories are highlighted below, the opportunity to work with Saint Phalle over the years has been deeply affecting on both a personal and professional level. “I have been very fortunate in my life to work with many leading artists like Richard Serra and Jasper Johns and I think that Niki has been one of my major influences,” said Ron McPherson, whose company La Paloma has fabricated many of the artist’s large sculptures since 1994. “It is just incredible to see a person that can live in so many different worlds at one time—a mature woman, a child, a mystic, and a realist.” Marcelo Zitelli, La Jolla, California Argentinean-born Marcelo Zitelli first met Saint Phalle in 1987 in Paris where he had come to work in the theater. For the first five years, he lived in the artist’s home, assisting her in the making of small maquettes from original drawings, and working with her and Jean Tinguely on the fountain at Château Chinon for French President Mitterand, and at the Tarot Garden in southern Tuscany.

Andreas Bechtler, the museum’s patron and namesake, recalls seeing the piece initially in Switzerland and became reacquainted with the sculpture after it was included in an exhibition a few years ago in Atlanta. At the time, Bechtler was pondering his options for an outdoor piece for the museum and was leaning towards something along the lines of the Centre Pompidou’s Stravinsky Fountain (a collaboration between de Saint Phalle and her husband, sculptor Jean Tinguely). He decided to purchase the work after that Atlanta experience because for him “it really clicked.” lthough it’s still a relative newcomer to Charlotte, Firebird, the Niki de Saint Phalle mosaic sculpture, prominently located on the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art’s main entrance plaza, has already become something of an icon for the city since its unveiling in November, 2009. The work has appeared in all sorts of local marketing promotions, brochures and TV spots, and has caught the eye of every tourist who has made their way down South Tryon Street.

  • NIKI DE SAINT PHALLE April 19Th – June 30Th, 2012
PRESS RELEASE N.4 NIKI DE SAINT PHALLE April 19th – June 30th, 2012 The Vicky David Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of artworks by the French-American sculptor, painter and filmmaker Niki de Saint Phalle from April 19th, 2012. A key figure of the New Realism movement, Niki de Saint Phalle (1930 - 2002) scored contemporary art with her colorful and round shape works. Niki de Saint Phalle spends her childhood and adolescence between France and the United States. A victim of incest when she was eleven, made her a turbulent teenager with heightened sensitivity. Early on, she rebels against traditional morals of the middle class, from which she is from and denounces the distribution of roles. At 18 she elopes and after the birth of her two children, Niki sinks into a severe nervous breakdown. She finds refuge in painting and becomes part of the Parisian artistic society that highly encourages her. In the 1960s, she draws attention to herself with the “Shooting Paintings”, performances during which she invites viewers to shoot (with a rifle) at bags of paint hidden behind a complex assembly of plaster and common objects. The shoot-outs are a therapy for Niki: pulling the paint is like drawing on society and its injustices. The famous art critic Pierre Restany is enthused by these performances and decides to adopt her among the New Realists. Le Champignon Magique", 1989 Mixed Media 300 x 210 x 170 cm / 118 x 82 x 67 in Niki shares now her life and work with Jean Tinguely. Her work takes a more feminine turn with the “Nanas”, her famous sculptures of voluptuous women in bright colors made of mesh, polyester and paper mache, for which she will obtain international recognition.

Course Description During this twenty-four day Maymester course in Paris, students will explore moments in Parisian salon culture as sites of artistic inspiration and collaboration. In doing so, students will investigate the cross-cultural legacy of Paris, and reflect on their own positions as global ambassadors of music, dance, and culture. Throughout the history of Paris, artists and intellectuals have gathered in the drawing rooms of notable salonnières to exchange new ideas and refine their aesthetic tastes. Using this model, we bring together artist-scholars of diverse backgrounds to explore specific salons of the past, engage in conversation, broaden our collective cultural literacy and seize possible opportunities for present-day creative projects. Learning Objectives By the end of the Maymester, students will be able to: • identify and describe trends and major artistic figures of the Parisian salon. • evaluate the historic significance of Paris as a center for music, dance, and general culture in reflective travel essays. Students will be asked to engage with urban and global geography as well as political economy. How, for instance, have Paris' urban geography and France's situation in relation to the Middle East, Africa, and Europe poised it to be a cultural center? How has the city’s cultural positioning shifted amid larger shifts in commerce and labor from the Age of Enlightenment to our own age of neoliberalism? The experience of walking through Paris, visiting its museums, concert halls, and performance spaces, will guide students as they reflect on these questions.

The show features 172 items, including sculptures, drawings, sketches and films, which admirably reflect the course followed by the artist and allow visitors to examine not only the evolution and quality of his creations but also the richness of his extensive oeuvre. The catalogue published to accompany the show contains illustrations of the works exhibited and includes essays on Tinguely and his work by the curators of the exhibition, Andres Pardey, deputy director of Museum Tinguely in Basel, and Klaus Littmann, director of Littmann Kulturprojekte. Jean Tinguely (Freiburg, 1925) spent his childhood and adolescence in Basel, where he trained as a decorator at the Arts and Crafts School during the Second World War. There he started doing abstract painting strongly influenced by Surrealism, the Bauhaus and, above all, the work of Kurt Schwitters. After the war he moved to Zurich, and in 1952 he and his first wife, Eva Aeppli, went to live in Paris. He soon made contact with the art world there, he met Brancusi and Yves Klein, and he had his first solo exhibition at Galerie Arnaud. During that period he made his first sound relief, exhibited in the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles in 1955.
