Timeline of French Manitoba (1712-1993)
Timeline of French Manitoba (1712-1993) 1712-1713: Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) employees in York Factory indicate in their report to London that [French] Canadians were trading on the shores of Lake Winnipeg, harming the HBC’s own trade. 1738: La Vérendrye reaches the current site of St. Boniface. French Canadian traders and voyageurs coming from Lower Canada use La Vérendrye’s route on their way to Western Canada. Ca. 1780-1810: A Métis identity develops among a distinct community. 1812: The first Scottish and Irish colonists recruited by Lord Selkirk arrive at the Forks. 1816: The Métis declare themselves a nation, following the Battle of Seven Oaks. Perhaps one of the first written references to the Métis Nation was made by Alexander MacDonnell, in a letter to Duncan Cameron dated March 13th, 1816. 1818: Arrival of the Rev. Norbert Provencher, the Rev. Sévère Dumoulin, and seminarian Guillaume Edge to the Red River. Permanent establishment of the Catholic Church in Western Canada. 1822: Creation of the Council of Assiniboia, a local government put in place by the Hudson’s Bay Company to assist the company’s governor in running the Red River Colony. The Council performed mainly judicial functions. 1829: Establishment of St. Boniface’s first girls’ school. The school was placed under the management of two lay women, Angélique and Marguerite Nolin. 1835: The Council of Assiniboia is transformed into a legislative and executive assembly. To ensure the enforcement of laws and facilitate administration, the Council creates committees, establishes courts, and organizes a police force. Several Francophones, Canadian and Métis, were called on to fill various positions in the judiciary and the police. -

Archdiocese of St. Boniface Timeline
Archdiocese of St. Boniface Timeline An advantage of timelines is that they present facts in an order which makes locating precise information easy. Though they give the appearance of a sequence of objective facts, their information is presented in a very subjective framework. The timeline that follows lists events related to the history of Archdiocese of St. Boniface. Given the nature of the information and the historiographic tradition, it is primarily the clergy’s actions and history which are featured. The territory in question is that of the Archdiocese of St. Boniface, which has seen numerous modifications since its creation in 1847 and its last reduction in 1952. Precise dates should be approached with caution. The date of a foundation might refer to the arrival of the first priest, the year a priest first took up residence, the canonical erection of a mission or the later canonical erection of a parish. Lastly, some dates correspond to the establishment of a religious community, such as the Oblates founding missions, houses, or residences. If these dates suggest a certain beginning, they are not being placed in their proper context. For example, when Father Albert Lacombe, O.M.I. came to Rat Portage in 1880, the Canadian Pacific Railway company, half of whose workers were Catholic, was tasked with completing the Winnipeg-Fort William stretch. In 1879, the Hudson’s Bay Company established the region’s principal trading post in Rat Portage. It became the central point through which travelers and goods bound for Fort Frances passed on Lake of the Woods’ steamships. -

“LES GENS DE CETTE PLACE”: OBLATES AND THE EVOLVING CONCEPT OF MÉTIS AT ÎLE-À-LA-CROSSE, 1845-1898 Timothy Paul Foran Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies In partial fulfilment of the requirements For the PhD degree in history Department of History Faculty of Arts University of Ottawa © Timothy Paul Foran, Ottawa, Canada, 2011 i Abstract This dissertation examines the construction and evolution of categories of indigeneity within the context of the Oblate (Roman Catholic) apostolate at Île-à-Crosse in present- day north-western Saskatchewan between 1845 and 1898. While focusing on one central mission station, this study illuminates broad historical processes that informed Oblate perceptions and impelled their evolution over a fifty-three-year period. In particular, this study illuminates processes that shaped Oblate concepts of sauvage and métis. It does this through a qualitative analysis of missionary correspondence, mission records and published reports. In the process, this dissertation challenges the orthodox notion that Oblate commentators simply discovered and described a singular, empirically existing and readily identifiable Métis population. Rather, this dissertation contends that Oblates played an important role in the conceptual production of les métis. ii Acknowledgments I have incurred many debts over the long and eventful years during which this dissertation came into being. As chrono- logical sequence is important in the relation of the events, the thesis is divided ínto four periods. The first period dates from the arrivar of Father Provencher in 1818. From the very beginning the missionary taught Latin along with the other conventional subjects, ühereby estabrishing a crassicar course that was to be con- tlnued untlf the present day.
