Through examining major publication institutions, publishing projects, and their managers and contributors from the late nineteenth century to the 1920s, I show that the expansion of the scope and variety of printed works, as well as new the social structures surrounding publishing, substantially impacted the activity of Chinese Buddhists. [email protected] Abstract Can public social media data be harnessed to predict COVID-19 case counts? We analyzed more than 12 million COVID-19 related posts on Weibo, a popular Twitter-like social media platform in China, from November 20, 2019 to March 3, 2020. We developed a machine learning classifier to identify “sick posts,” which are reports of one’s own and other people’s symptoms and diagnosis related to COVID-19. We then modeled the predictive power of sick posts and other COVID-19 posts on daily case counts. We found that reports of symptoms and diagnosis of COVID-19 significantly predicted daily case counts, up to seven days ahead of official statistics. But other COVID-19 posts did not have similar predictive power. For a subset of geotagged posts (2.85% of all retrieved posts), we found that the predictive pattern held true for both Hubei province and the rest of mainland China, regardless of unequal distribution of healthcare resources and outbreak timeline. Researchers and disease control agencies should pay close attention to the social media infosphere regarding COVID-19. On top of monitoring overall search and posting activities, it is crucial to sift through the contents and efficiently identify true signals from noise.

Nine out of 10 of them would have predicted a rosy outcome for their “patient.” They would have said, “Oh, don’t worry! China is experiencing growing pains now, and there is still an imbalance between the mental and the physical. We just need to provide nutrients (capital and technology). As intellectual growth proceeds, China will become a fine adult. Just wait and see!” But recently a growing number of physicians have begun to wonder: “This patient’s behavior is abnormal. Could this be cancer?” “After all this time the patient’s condition should have returned to normal.” Even some Japanese physicians are now skeptical. But most of them, when examining the patient, conclude that it is best to adopt a wait-and-see policy. Why? Because even when confronted with Chinese-style tyranny, most Japanese ignore it, confident that it will not affect them directly. Unfortunately, the Wuhan coronavirus burst onto the scene, and spread through the world at lightning speed. It has affected every inhabitant of this planet either directly or indirectly; it is impossible to ignore. Not only those who have contracted it, and their families, but also people who have not been infected, have been forced to take preventive measures. Interaction with others has been held to a minimum, and those who dare to venture outside must practice social distancing.

A Conductor’s Guide to Lyric Diction in Standard Chinese Yik Ling Elaine Choi Doctor of Musical Arts Faculty of Music University of Toronto 2018 Abstract Chinese choral music is a relatively recent phenomenon. Within the last century, Chinese conductors and choral ensembles have actively fostered a vibrant choral community. Furthermore, Chinese composers have taken increasing interest in the choral art, resulting in a growing body of new choral repertoire. Contemporary Chinese choral music adopts western choral approaches such as voice parts (SATB), style (bel canto), harmony and structure, but retains Chinese texts. In order to introduce Chinese choral art music to English-speaking choirs, conductors must be equipped with good resources to deepen their understanding of the choral culture in China. More importantly, they need supportive materials to help them tackle the challenges of the language. Currently there are few guides to lyric diction in Standard Chinese for singers and choral conductors. The primary goal of this study is to break down the complexity of the pronunciation of this language, using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and Pinyin systems, to provide a helpful guide to conductors in teaching Chinese choral music. ii A secondary goal is to introduce choral musicians to contemporary Chinese choral music.     Journal of Quantitative Description: Digital Media 1(2021), 1–47 10.51685/jqd.2021.013 Public Sentiment on Chinese Social Media during the Emergence of COVID­19 YINGDAN LU JENNIFER PAN YIQING XU Stanford University, USA When COVID-19 first emerged in China, there was speculation that theout- break would trigger public anger and weaken the Chinese regime. By analyzing millions of social media posts from Sina Weibo made between December 2019 and February 2020, we describe the contours of public, online discussions per- taining to COVID-19 in China. We find that discussions of COVID-19 became widespread on January 20, 2020, consisting primarily of personal reflections, opinions, updates, and appeals. We find that the largest bursts of discussion, which contain simultaneous spikes of criticism and support targeting the Chi- nese government, coincide with the January 23 lockdown of Wuhan and the February 7 death of Dr. Li Wenliang. Criticisms are directed at the govern- ment for perceived lack of action, incompetence, and wrongdoing—in particu- lar, censoring information relevant to public welfare. Support is directed at the government for aggressive action and positive outcomes. As the crisis unfolds, the same events are interpreted differently by different people, with those who criticize focusing on the government’s shortcomings and those who praise fo- cusing on the government’s actions.
