3 Amazônia: a busca do eldorado A origem da lenda do eldorado é indígena. Os viajantes europeus a interpretaram livremente e passaram a acreditar que havia um local na Amazônia onde o ouro era farto. Segundo a lenda, no coração da floresta amazônica reluzia uma cidade com prédios e telhados dourados, habitada pelos índios Manoa, que tomavam banho de ouro em pó às margens do lago Parima, ou lago Douro. Essas lendas só serviram para alimentar a sanha dos viajantes e ceifar muitas vidas, inclusive dos indígenas, caçados pela floresta para servirem de carregadores e remadores, na busca do eldorado. Hoje, sabemos que o eldorado era uma metáfora que representava toda a riqueza e diversidade da Amazônia, pois, no século XVI, a região também era conhecida como “terra da canela”. Acreditavam os viajantes, obviamente com objetivos mercantilistas, que especiarias e drogas apreciadas na Europa seriam facilmente recolhidas na floresta. De fato, a canela e as drogas eram abundantes, porém esparsas, floresta adentro. Certamente, os viajantes achavam que iriam encontrá-las agrupadas ou próximas às margens do grande rio. Daí a corrida pela conquista do território, o eldorado das especiarias. A curiosidade em relação a outros lugares e povos sempre impulsionou o homem em busca de sensações que são despertadas diante de uma natureza desconhecida. A literatura nos fornece exemplos de várias narrativas que alimentaram essa busca ao desconhecido e à aventura. Um dos mais famosos narradores foi Homero, cujo nome associamos à narrativa épica Odisséia que é um relato sobre os dez anos de aventuras experimentadas por Ulisses, herói legendário da Grécia antiga, no esforço de retomar a Ítaca após a guerra de Troia. -
The Transformational Potential of Higher Education Inclusion
n the fi eld of higher education research, one of the most fascinating observations is the consistent and permanent expansion of higher education systems worldwide since theI end of the Second World War. Undoubtedly, the predominant approach to address Jesús Humberto Pineda Olivieri these developments has been through quantitative analysis, as well as international comparisons. The following work examines the particularities of the Venezuelan context with the aim of identifying specifi c features of this worldwide phenomenon in this South The Transformational Potential American case. Through a combination of qualitative methods, the author proposes a of Higher Education Inclusion biographical approach for the study of higher education inclusion processes, which takes into account the perspectives and experiences of those who have been targeted by an ambitious higher education expansion process. The most distinctive feature of this work Biographical Trajectories of Students would be its methodological contribution to the fi eld of higher education research. One from Disadvantaged Environments could also argue that the ethnographic account of the Bolivarian Missions of education in Venezuela in Chavez’s Venezuela is both original and unprecedented. Furthermore, the writing approach bridges the interests of both academics, practitioners of the fi eld and members of the general public. NR1103_02 qxd 11/15/07 6:10 PM Page 4 Race and Redemption Racial and Ethnic Evolution in Rudolf Steiner’s Anthroposophy Peter Staudenmaier ABSTRACT: With its origins in modern Theosophy, Rudolf Steiner’s Anthroposophy is built around a racial view of human nature arranged in a hierarchical framework. This article examines the details of the Anthroposophical theory of cosmic and individual redemption and draws out the characteristic assumptions about racial and ethnic difference that underlie it. Particular attention is given to textual sources unavailable in English, which reveal the specific features of Steiner’s account of “race evolution” and “soul evolution.” Placing Steiner’s worldview in its historical and ideological context, the article highlights the contours of racial thinking within a prominent alternative spiritual movement and delineates the central role of a racially configured conception of evolution within Anthroposophy past and present. -

Winter/Spring THE CEA FORUM 2015 Cross-Examining Bigotry: Using Toulmin’s Argument Model and Huckin’s CDA to Interrogate Overt and Covert Racist Arguments Nancy Effinger Wilson Texas State University “Why is it that a Black person can call me ‘cracker,’ but I can’t call him the ‘N-word?’” my composition student wanted to know. He had come by my office following our second class discussion of Coming of Age in Mississippi, Anne Moody’s 1968 autobiography in which she traces her life from her childhood in segregated Mississippi through her time as an activist in the Civil Rights Movement. Taken aback by such a question, the first words I uttered were, “why in the world would you want to call someone that?” and my second, “The racism you have a problem with in the book is against Whites?” I then realized that rather than feeling a uniting compassion for Moody as a person struggling against systemic racism, Travis had become defensive, perceiving Moody’s condemnation of “crackers” as a condemnation of all White people. Thus, despite my and Moody’s effort to decenter whiteness, this White, male student had found a way to center it again. Travis’ parting words to me that day were “When am I going to be a protected minority?” After this experience, I considered abandoning my social justice agenda. After all, I am supposed to be teaching students how to write, not how to be more humane and open-minded individuals. Perhaps it was time to take Stanley Fish’s advice and “save the world on my own time.” However, Travis’ comments were not only immoral, they were illogical, and logic is a 55 www.cea-web.org Winter/Spring THE CEA FORUM 2015 writing teacher’s business. -

Photo by www.kremlin.ru / Creative Commons 4.0 Russian-Venezuelan Relations at a Crossroads Vladimir Rouvinski* Russia’s foreign policy is part of a complex tapestry intended to bolster its current president, Vladimir Putin. Moscow’s relations with Venezuela are a prime example of this strategy. Russian engagement with the Bolivarian Republic demonstrates Vladimir Putin’s global ambitions to recruit geographically distant nations as partners in constructing a new multipolar, anti-U.S. world order. The Russian government has learned to bolster domestic support for Putin at home by taking advantage of situations unfolding in the Russian “far abroad” as elements of a political spectacle portraying Russia’s return as a global power. Russia’s relationship with Venezuela is also a story of missed business opportunities, multi-million dollar risky investments, dubious personal enrichment, and vast corruption. It also features denials, by a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, of massive human rights violations in Venezuela in the name of “21st Century Socialism.” Three key aspects of interaction between Moscow and Caracas are essential to understand the Russia’s policy toward the region and Venezuela in particular. First is Russia’s “return” to Latin America toward the end of the 1990s and subsequent events LATIN AMERICAN PROGRAM LATIN AMERICAN PROGRAM leading to the present challenges. Second is the role of political priorities rather than business interests that comprise the true guiding principles of the Russian involvement in the key sectors of the Venezuelan economy such as oil and gas. -

It argues that beginning in the early 1920s a nationalist movement in music emerged, which was not only determined by but also determinant in the construction of a concept of nationhood. The movement took place at a crucial time when the country had entered a process of economic transformation. The shift in Venezuela’s economic system from agrarian to industrial in the 1910s triggered a reconfiguration of the country’s social and cultural structures. -

If citing, you are advised to consult the published version for pagination, volume/issue and date of publication ‘There Can Be No Revolution without Culture’: Reading and Writing in the Bolivarian Revolution KATIE BROWN University of Bristol Under Hugo Chávez’s ‘Bolivarian Revolution’, the government made itself present in all stages of literary production, applying the official idea of reading and writing as ‘socialist practices’. The Bolivarian government envisaged a popular counter-hegemony, courting popular support while delegitimising cultural elites and reinforcing class tensions. Bolivarian cultural policy is anachronistic in an age of global literary markets, while the emphasis on a national collective of writers over internationally promoted representative writers of the revolution is particularly radical. A revolution that is not accompanied by a cultural drive intended to give power back to our roots, push our ideas and rescue our customs and everything else that culture implies…. ABSTRACT This thesis project will argue that the participation of indigenous Mexicans in the Revolution of 1910 and the EZLN uprising of 1994 forced José Vasconcelos, Leopoldo Zea, and Enrique Dussel to reflect on the legacies of Mexico’s colonial past in order to propose how such peoples would form a part of modern Mexican society and identity. Vasconcelos proposed the idea of the cosmic race to encourage indigenous assimilation. Although Zea was a decolonial thinker, he too encouraged indigenous assimilation. -

TV Urgente Urban Exclusion, Civil Society, and the Politics of Television in Venezuela John Patrick Leary “Aqui no hay barrios” (There are no barrios here) was what real estate agents told me when they showed me apartments in one of the middle-class zones of eastern Caracas, to assure me that the slum districts that house roughly half of the city’s population, called barrios in Venezuela, were safely distant. Shortly after I arrived in the country, a security official at the U.S. Embassy warned me never to travel into the slums. “The people there are so desperately poor,” he insisted earnestly, “that they’ll rob your shoes, your shirt, your eyeglasses, your belt — and that’s if you get out alive.” The barrios are often identified in everyday conversations like these as a kind of cancer on the city, pouring bodies into and draining resources out of the valley of Caracas.
