  • The Holmes Brothers Deliver Magnificent Old Time, Gospel-Style R&B, and Raw Electric Blues with Unparalleled Artistry and Au
Glorious, rootsy R&B, gospel, blues and country. Full of soul and surprises. --USA TODAY The Holmes Brothers deliver magnificent old time, gospel-style R&B, and raw electric blues with unparalleled artistry and authenticity. Sherman’s bottomless baritone, Wendell’s classic soul singer’s wail and Popsy’s otherworldly falsetto do more than complement one another; on stage or in the recording studio, the three become like a mystical fourth entity, inexplicable yet sublime, a gift to the world of music. -Chicago Tribune A breathtaking and heartfelt journey through gospel-drenched soul, blues, funk and country. -Chicago Sun-Times Timeless, deeply soulful and uplifting gospel-drenched blues, street corner doo-wop, ballads, R&B, country and funk. -NY Times Over the course of their 30-plus year career, The Holmes Brothers (bassist/vocalist Sherman Holmes, guitarist/pianist/vocalist Wendell Holmes, drummer/vocalist and brother-in-spirit Popsy Dixon) have been feeding the souls of their devoted and ever-growing fanbase with a joyous and moving blend of blues, gospel, soul, R&B, rock ‘n’ roll and country. Their amazing three-part harmony singing, mixing Wendell’s gruff and gravelly vocals with Popsy’s soaring falsetto and Sherman’s rich baritone brings the soul and spirit of gospel music into everything they perform. Equally gripping is the rhythmic foundation laid down by Sherman’s bass playing and Popsy’s drumming, perfectly complimenting Wendell’s blues-soaked guitar solos and church-inspired piano playing. The band easily blends Saturday night’s roadhouse rock with the gospel fervor and harmonies of Sunday morning’s church service.

Books by Daniel Wolff are available at amazon.com, and other on-line sites, as well as most booksellers. Below find Wolff's wanderings through Jesse Winchester-land. _______ In the parking lot behind the r&b club, the band is taking a break, and a young man approaches his hero. The young man is a student at the local Catholic high school, the middle-class son of a lawyer. His hero is the bandleader, Willie Mitchell, who will go on to national fame as the producer of the classic soul singer, Al Green. But at this time -- 1959, 1960 -- he's fronting a six-piece, horn-driven combo that is the regular house band at the Manhattan Club in Memphis, Tennessee. As the players have a smoke and try to cool off in the thick Southern air, the young man moves closer. "I just worshipped these musicians," he recalls. "I wanted to be them." Back at Catholic school, he's in a rock&roll band that plays the CYO dances.

  • Episode Guides
EPISODE GUIDES Soul Deep - The Story Of Black Popular Music The Birth Of Soul - Ep1/6 BBC Two 7 May, 9.00-10.00pm Soul music has conquered the world in the last 50 years - growing from the raw, electric rhythms of the black underclass, it is now a billion dollar industry with R&B and hip-hop dominating the world's charts. It's been the soundtrack to some of the most extraordinary social, political and cultural shifts. And, together with the civil rights movement, it has challenged the white hegemony, helped breakdown segregation and encouraged the fight for racial equality. This new six part series, made by the BBC team who produced the critically-acclaimed Lost Highway,Walk On By and Dancing In The Street series, charts the evolution of soul music -with a fascinating combination of rare archive and contemporary interviews. From rhythm and blues to today's R&B, via gospel, southern soul, Motown, funk and hip-hop soul, Soul Deep tells the story of the rise of black popular music - in the words of its greatest performers, producers, musicians and commentators. Starting with a previously unseen BBC interview with Ray Charles, he reveals how his innovations first brought soul to a wider audience. "Ray was the genius. He turned the world onto soul music," comments Bobby Womack. The term rhythm and blues was coined by Billboard Magazine journalist Jerry Wexler after he was asked by his editor to find an alternative for the label 'race music'. After many years touring on what was known as the 'chitlin' circuit' (a network of black clubs and bars) with artists like Ruth Brown, Ray finally created his own style - by unifying the sexually-charged music of the dance floor with the spiritually-charged sounds of the church hall.
