Kronmant INTRODUCTION Six years after Alexander Bickel's death, John Hart Ely described his former teacher and colleague as "probably the most creative constitutional theorist of the past twenty years."" Many today would concur in Ely's judgment.' Indeed, among his academic peers, Bickel is widely -regarded with a measure of respect that borders on reverence. There is, however, something puzzling about Bickel's reputation, for despite the high regard in which his work is held, Bickel has few contemporary followers.' There is, today, no Bickelian school of constitutional theory, no group of scholars working to elaborate Bickel's main ideas or even to defend them, no con- tinuing and connected body of legal writing in the intellectual tradition to which Bickel claimed allegiance. In fact, just the opposite is true. O’Connor Abstract Nominalism, Romanticism, Negative Dialectics by Megan A. O’Connor Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California, Berkeley Professor Steven Goldsmith, Chair This dissertation recovers a neglected dialectical tradition within British empiricism and its Romantic afterlife. Beginning with John Locke, I demonstrate how a dialectical tradition developed as a self-critical response to the political, philosophical, and aesthetic problem of nominalism, which holds that universals do not exist and that everything is particular. As contemporaries like Dugald Stewart and S.T. Coleridge observed, British empiricists had revived the medieval nominalist-realist debates and sided with the nominalists. I show that nominalism – what Karl Marx called the “first form” of materialism – was taken up and critiqued by Romantic poets as an impediment to the task of representing abstract social and historical forces. Romantic poets as distinct as Coleridge, William Blake, and Charlotte Smith suggest that, in questioning the validity of social abstractions, the nominalist bent of empiricism tended to disable critical interrogations of larger social structures that otherwise remain inaccessible to the senses. In diagnosing the abstracting force of historical conditions like the commodification of the literary marketplace, however, the texts I examine also respond by affirming particularity. -

TOPIC 35: SIXTH COMMANDMENT OF THE DECALOGUE 1. Male and female he created them… God’s call to men and women to “be fruitful and multiply” should be understood from the perspective of our creation “in the image and likeness” of God (cf. Catechism 2331, 2334). This entails that human procreation, in the wider context of our sexuality, cannot be “something simply biological, but concerns the innermost being of the human person as such” (Catechism 2361), and so is essentially distinct from animal life. God is love (1 Jn 4:8), and his love is fruitful. He wants human beings to share in this fecundity, by linking the procreation of each new person with a specific act of love between a man and a woman.1 Therefore “sex is not a shameful thing; it is a divine gift, ordained to life, to love, to fruitfulness.”2 Since a human being is an individual consisting of a body and a soul, the loving procreative act calls for the participation of all dimensions of the human person—body, feelings, spirit.3 Original sin broke the harmony within each person and with other men and women. This rupture had a special repercussion on the capacity to live our sexuality in accord with human reason. It obscured the inseparable bond between the affective and procreative dimensions of the conjugal act, and made it more difficult for the will to exercise control over the affective and bodily forces of sexuality. In these circumstances, the struggle for purification and growth in maturity that our sexuality requires does not imply any rejection or negative consideration of this gift that men and women have received from God. -

A gentle royal nature (genotype), which blends with the excellent treatment of morality, body and spirit, will create the ideal model leader (phenotype). Thus, noble nature and royal law will give the state the excellent leader. Even if the forms and the conditions that determine them change, the one that remains stable and permanent is the Platonic ethos in art and the science of politics and administration in general. The salvation from corruption is from childhood the cultivation of man by treating at the same time the moral of the soul, the beauty of the body and the wisdom of the spirit. IMPARATO Dissertation Director: P. Dennis Bathory This work seeks to explore the concept of religious toleration as it has been conceived by key thinkers at important junctures in the history of the West in the hopes of identifying some of the animating principles at work in societies confronted with religious difference and dissent. One can observe that, at a time when the political influence of the Catholic Church was ascendant and then in an era of Church hegemony, St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas respectively, faced with religious dissent, argue for toleration in some cases and coercion in others. While, from a contemporary liberal standpoint, one may be tempted to judge their positions to be opportunistic, harsh, or authoritarian, if we read them in the context of their social realities and operative values, we can better understand their stances as emanating ultimately from prudence (that virtue integrating truth and practice) and charity (the love of God and neighbor). With the shattering of Christian unity and the decoupling of throne and altar that occurs in the early modern period, the context for religious toleration is radically altered. -

Free will says I can choose To call the game play… Any good sports team Has as its aim Both an offense and defense If it is going to win the game If we are going to end abortion Our offense should be To live the Church teaching About Chastity Chastity is a virtue I am choosing to live now It entails living abstinence It’s sort of like a vow. And If I live abstinence, It is no distortion That I will never have to make A decision about abortion. Choosing to live chastity Will help me grow holy It will set me apart And strengthen me slowly Choosing to live chastity Will help me be healthy It will prevent some diseases And keep me stealthy. St. Thomas Aquinas teaches that Living Virtue makes us happy So happiness I choose through The living of chastity. Artículos de investigación | Research Articles 55 2018 vol. 1, n°. 2 pp: 55-67 doi: 10.28970/hh.2018.2.a3 PELAGIANISM AS NOVELTY IN AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO Pelagianismo como una novedad en Agustín de Hipona Giulio Malavasi1 ABSTRACT Augustine fought against the Pelagians for almost two decades, from 411 to his death in 430, when he left unfinished his last work against Julian of Aeclanum. During this long period, Augustine countered the Pelagian movement mainly through theological treatises and sermons. In this paper, these sources will be studied from a rhetorical perspective: in particular, the several passages in which Augustine labels the Pelagian movement as a novelty, a rhetorical technique that offers Augustine several possibility of attacking the Pelagians, will be carefully analysed. This specific rhetorical tactic against the Pelagian serves at least three purposes. First, Augustine clearly identifies the true Catholic community rooted in the ancient tradition of faith with his own teaching. Second, Augustine definitely discredits his enemies of being completely outside the ancient tradition of the Church because they represent a novelty with- out any connection with the true and ancient faith. Third, Augustine spreads among his audience the doctrine of original sin, which is, at least in Augustine’s view, in perfect agreement with the tradition of the Church. All these issues will be explored in this paper.
