Lurking in the Shadows: Wide-Separation Gas Giants As Tracers of Planet Formation
Lurking in the Shadows: Wide-Separation Gas Giants as Tracers of Planet Formation Thesis by Marta Levesque Bryan In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY Pasadena, California 2018 Defended May 1, 2018 ii © 2018 Marta Levesque Bryan ORCID: [0000-0002-6076-5967] All rights reserved iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First and foremost I would like to thank Heather Knutson, who I had the great privilege of working with as my thesis advisor. Her encouragement, guidance, and perspective helped me navigate many a challenging problem, and my conversations with her were a consistent source of positivity and learning throughout my time at Caltech. I leave graduate school a better scientist and person for having her as a role model. Heather fostered a wonderfully positive and supportive environment for her students, giving us the space to explore and grow - I could not have asked for a better advisor or research experience. I would also like to thank Konstantin Batygin for enthusiastic and illuminating discussions that always left me more excited to explore the result at hand. Thank you as well to Dimitri Mawet for providing both expertise and contagious optimism for some of my latest direct imaging endeavors. Thank you to the rest of my thesis committee, namely Geoff Blake, Evan Kirby, and Chuck Steidel for their support, helpful conversations, and insightful questions. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Brendan Bowler. His talk at Caltech my second year of graduate school introduced me to an unexpected population of massive wide-separation planetary-mass companions, and lead to a long-running collaboration from which several of my thesis projects were born. -
Resource Guide
PROVIDING BIBLICALLY ACCURATE RECORDED MATERIALS FOR EDUCATION AND MINISTRY. RESOURCE GUIDE © 2012 Lifepointe Ministries All rights reserved Welcome to LifePointe! One of many challenges faced by ACSI teachers and administrators is earning the necessary Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) in Biblical Studies to keep their certification up-to-date. LifePointe Media tackles the challenge head-on by providing them with affordable and dynamic Bible studies that have been pre-approved by ACSI for CEU’s in Biblical Studies. Although currently serving as Senior Pastor of the dynamic and growing congregation of Chapel Pointe in Hudsonville, Michigan, my roots are deep in the ACSI movement, having served as Superintendent of both Tri-City Christian Schools of Vista, California and most recently, NorthPointe Christian Schools of Grand Rapids, Michigan. While at NorthPointe Christian, I saw the struggles our teachers faced getting their Bible CEU’s and determined to find a way to help them. I have always had a tremendous love for teaching the Bible, and both schools were kind enough to let me preach at a local church. With the help of a competent staff, we were able to package the sermons and get them pre-approved by ACSI. This allowed our teachers to get their Bible CEU’s in a convenient and inexpensive manner. Our teachers shared what we were doing and primarily by word-of- mouth, other ACSI teachers from around the country heard about the program and requested or CD’s. The ministry has continued to grow and today, LifePointe Media ships CD’s to most of the 50 states and several foreign countries. -

Interstellar Medium Sculpting of the HD 32297 Disk
DRAFT VERSION MAY 31, 2018 Preprint typeset using LATEX style emulateapj v. 7/15/03 INTERSTELLAR MEDIUM SCULPTING OF THE HD 32297 DEBRIS DISK JOHN H. DEBES1,2,ALYCIA J. WEINBERGER3, MARC J. KUCHNER1 Draft version May 31, 2018 ABSTRACT We detect the HD 32297 debris disk in scattered light at 1.6 and 2.05 µm. We use these new observations together with a previous scattered light image of the disk at 1.1 µm to examine the structure and scattering efficiency of the disk as a function of wavelength. In addition to surface brightness asymmetries and a warped morphology beyond ∼1.′′5 for one lobe of the disk, we find that there exists an asymmetry in the spectral features of the grains between the northeastern and southwestern lobes. The mostly neutral color of the disk lobes imply roughly 1 µm-sized grains are responsible for the scattering. We find that the asymmetries in color and morphology can plausibly be explained by HD 32297’s motion into a dense ISM cloud at a relative velocity of15kms−1. We modeltheinteractionofdustgrainswith HIgasin thecloud. We argue that supersonic ballistic drag can explain the morphology of the debris disks of HD 32297, HD 15115, and HD 61005. This study is a secondary analysis of existing data from a local implementation of a national survey of student appraisals of teacher-student relationships, school experiences and their impacts on achievement. Data were analyzed to explore differences in perceptions for White and Black students, for higher- and lower-performing Black students and for Black males and females who attend suburban, high SES, high-performing, predominantly White high schools. -

How eccentric orbital solutions can hide planetary systems in 2:1 resonant orbits Guillem Anglada-Escud´e1, Mercedes L´opez-Morales1,2, John E. Chambers1 [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] ABSTRACT The Doppler technique measures the reflex radial motion of a star induced by the presence of companions and is the most successful method to detect ex- oplanets. If several planets are present, their signals will appear combined in the radial motion of the star, leading to potential misinterpretations of the data. Specifically, two planets in 2:1 resonant orbits can mimic the signal of a sin- gle planet in an eccentric orbit. We quantify the implications of this statistical degeneracy for a representative sample of the reported single exoplanets with available datasets, finding that 1) around 35% percent of the published eccentric one-planet solutions are statistically indistinguishible from planetary systems in 2:1 orbital resonance, 2) another 40% cannot be statistically distinguished from a circular orbital solution and 3) planets with masses comparable to Earth could be hidden in known orbital solutions of eccentric super-Earths and Neptune mass planets. Subject headings: Exoplanets – Orbital dynamics – Planet detection – Doppler method arXiv:0809.1275v2 [astro-ph] 25 Nov 2009 Introduction Most of the +300 exoplanets found to date have been discovered using the Doppler tech- nique, which measures the reflex motion of the host star induced by the planets (Mayor & Queloz 1995; Marcy & Butler 1996). The diverse characteristics of these exoplanets are somewhat surprising. Many of them are similar in mass to Jupiter, but orbit much closer to their 1Carnegie Institution of Washington, Department of Terrestrial Magnetism, 5241 Broad Branch Rd. -
