Image of the Other. Academic Dialogue in the Post-Soviet Space
Image of the Other. Academic Dialogue in the Post-Soviet Space Joint project of the Institute of Education Development and Kennan Institute (Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars, Washington D.C.) Fall 2018 – Winter 2019 The project goals and objectives The project aim is to respond to the above needs and to mobilize the scholarly community for combatting the spread of xenophobia, ethnic, cultural, gender and other forms of intolerance manifested through use and abuse of the image of the Other. Public goal of this project is the representation of balanced, scholarly grounded approach, unbiased mode of thinking and impartial style of the speech addressing highly controversial and politically manipulated problems and issues related to use and abuse of the image of ‘the Other’. The project was focused on three major objectives: 1. To organize large scale systemic research effort aimed at: a) analysis and deconstruction of cultural, social, ethnic, gender, racial stereotypes (this will begin with an identification of current events, the analysis of which promises to yield a deeper understanding of a larger set of similar events.) b) analysis and deconstruction of political strategies, discourses, manipulative technologies aimed at creation, use, misuse and abuse of the image of ‘the Other.’ (Since the process of imagining ‘the Other’ is familiar human tendency that does not in every instance result in violence and repression, the analysis will also seek to identify situations of multicultural contact and coexistence that exemplifies living with difference.) c) creating forums for the expression of opinion and articulating attitudes of international scholarly communities on these issues, in communication with civil society – independent media, scholarly circles, non-governmental organizations. -

The Politics of Dual Citizenship in Post-Soviet States SECURING POLITICAL GOALS THROUGH CITIZENSHIP RULES
The Politics of Dual Citizenship in Post-Soviet States SECURING POLITICAL GOALS THROUGH CITIZENSHIP RULES PONARS Eurasia Policy Memo No. 587 April 2019 Oxana Shevel1 Tufts University The post-World War II era, and especially the post-Cold War era, has seen the global spread of dual citizenship. Not only have the number of de-facto dual citizens proliferated, but more and more states, starting with the West European democracies, have amended their legislation to explicitly recognize and allow dual and multiple citizenships. Situating post-Soviet states in this global pattern reveals some similarities and important differences in the rationale behind allowing or forbidding dual citizenship. Like elsewhere in the world, acceptance of dual/multiple citizenship is often driven by new demographic and migration realities, in particular labor emigration in the post-Soviet period that created large numbers of de-facto dual citizens. International influences are also evident, as some post-Soviet states modeled their dual citizenship rules on the European standards reflected in international instruments such as the 1997 European Convention on Citizenship. At the same time, the politics of dual citizenship in the post-Soviet region exhibits several distinct trends. First, to a greater extent than in Western states, concerns for safeguarding state sovereignty and territorial integrity, and associated fears of possibly subversive actions by other states, particularly neighboring states, by means of dual citizenship and dual citizens are a key factor behind opposition to dual citizenship. Second, the extension of dual citizenship to co-ethnics is not a uniform reality. Instead, the right of ethnic diasporas to dual citizenship has been a highly contested issue, and fears of diaspora influences on domestic affairs have often stood in the way. -

The subcommittee will come to order. Our hearing today is on Civil Society Perspectives on Russia. A couple of weeks ago we had a hearing about what Russia is doing regarding frontline states: the Baltics; Ukraine; Georgia; Po- land; how Russia engages neighboring democracies; and the effort of the Putin government to undermine democracy in his backyard. Today we are going to learn what it’s like in Russia itself, the rollback of democracy by the Putin regime, and the biggest victims of all: the Russian people. We have an incredible hearing today. I am very honored to have witnesses who will tell us what’s really going on inside of Russia. Our first witness is Vladimir Kara-Murza, Vice-Chairman of Open Russia. I’ll talk about him just in a moment; Laura Jewett, Senior Associate and Regional Director for Eurasia from the Na- tional Democratic Institute; Jan Surotchak, Regional Director for Europe from the International Republican Institute. -
Timetable of Events Concerning 2016 Elections, Ukraine Involvement & Massive Illegal Activity
TIMETABLE OF EVENTS CONCERNING 2016 ELECTIONS, UKRAINE INVOLVEMENT & MASSIVE ILLEGAL ACTIVITY Many Americans will find it hard to believe what is documented below. Intellectually honest skeptics should check sites like Judicial Watch that have obtained government documents and email exchanges via Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuits and sworn testimonies of Ukrainians obtained by Rudolph Giuliani. Fact checking sources such as Google, Wikipedia, Snopes, Media Bias Fact Check, Facebook, TV, and print media actively suppress or misrepresent facts that undercut their political agendas. First, evidence has been uncovered by various investigative journalists and FOIA requests that give evidence to of massive coordinated corruption by Democratic Party operatives (DNC) and the Federal bureaucracy. Crimes uncovered include bribery, extortion, and money laundering. This chronological summary concerns the use of the services of officials of a Communist/Socialist government (Ukraine) and high ranking officials in the US government in 2016 to try to help Hillary Clinton win the 2016 election and the cover up of criminal activity, including by Joe Biden. Second, the Democratic Party, the mainstream media, and ‘Deep State” senior Federal ‘jobs for life’ bureaucrats in the Obama White House including the FBI, CIA, Justice and State Departments have attempted to and are continuing to try to remove from office a dully elected president, Donald Trump, because he is trying to stop such corruption and their long self-serving practices. President Trump’s team and others, in looking for the origins of the Russian collusion narrative, have uncovered individuals involved in massive criminal activity during and after the Obama administration. 1,000 YEARS OF UKRAINIAN HISTORY in 350 WORDS This is needed only so that the reader understands why it has been one of the most corrupt governments in the world. -

NCSEJ WEEKLY NEWS BRIEF Washington, DC March 24, 2017 Ukraine Is Governed By
NCSEJ WEEKLY NEWS BRIEF Washington, D.C. March 24, 2017 Ukraine is governed by "people with non-Ukrainian blood", says Savchenko LB.ua, March 21, 2017 https://en.lb.ua/news/2017/03/21/3385_ukraine_governed_people.html People's deputy Nadiya Savchenko says Ukraine is governed people with "non-Ukrainian blood." During an appearance on NewsOne TV channel on Tuesday, 21 March, Savchenko answered a telephone question from a woman from Krivyy Rih. "Nadya, why does not anyone say what people say? I stood at a bus stop and heard an old woman saying what has been written in the Bible: there was a Tatar-Mongol yoke, there was a Polish yoke for Ukraine, and now its Jewish yoke. Why do you keep mum about it?" the viewer asked. Savchenko replied: "Yes, thank you, a good question. If the people are talking about this, it must be the truth. And yes, we have the people at the power with, let's say, non-Ukrainian blood. We can talk about that, we should think and act!" Boryslav Bereza reaction on Savchenko’s interview MP of Jewish origin Borislav Bereza commented on the statement by his colleague on the parliament Nadezhda Savchenko that Ukrainian authorities have "non-Ukrainian blood". He wrote about this on his Facebook page. "I found the information about the anti-Semitic statement of Savchenko in Paris at a meeting with French parliamentarians. A journalist from Ukraine called me and asked to comment on the situation. After my comments french politics asked me what I was talking about, they were interested in my facial expressions and intonations.
