Elizabeth Sawyer Kelly Beauty’s Roots: Art Nurtures

WRAA Board of Directors WRAP and WRAA are two distinctly different programs President one is university-based and the other is a non-profit group—but both Jeanne Ferreira (19-20) 9041 Paddington Parkway, Verona, WI 53593 have been close collaborators for over 60 years in their mutual goal of 608-334-5063 [email protected] bringing art exhibit opportunities to Wisconsin citizens. Past President/Grant Writer Mary Ann Inman (19-21) The Wisconsin Regional Art Program (WRAP) has been 316 Church St., Clinton, WI 53525 helping nonprofessional Wisconsin artists develop their abilities for (608) 295-9779 [email protected] more than 75 years. WRAP artists put the Wisconsin idea into action, Vice President sharing work that represents cultures and communities from around the Sally Probasco (19-22) 4914 Marathon Dr., Madison, WI 53705 state. These lifelong learners also show the diversity of values, beliefs, (608) 231-3037 or [email protected] identities, and personal experiences that exist here, asking important Secretary questions about what it means to be a Wisconsinite. WRAP’s roots: Jan Feyzi (17-20) WRAP began in 1940, when painter John Steuart Curry organized the 5642 Silver Oak Dr., Fitchburg, WI 53711 first Rural Art Exhibit at UW-Madison’s Memorial Union. With help (608) 273-3429 [email protected] from WRAA, Curry made the program a touchstone for Wisconsin's Treasurer nonprofessional artists. This legacy has been carried on by later WRAP Becky Herb (19-21) directors Aaron Bohrod, James Schwalbach, Ken Kuemmerlein, Leslee 5806 Anchorage Ave., Madison, WI 53705 (608) 467-8594 or [email protected] Nelson, Helen Klebesadel, and Liese Pfeifer for the better part of a century. Membership/Registration Karen Cahill (18-22) 302 Fargo St., Lake Mills, WI 53551 Wisconsin Regional Artists Association (WRAA) is a non- (920) 648-2893 or [email protected] profit membership organization begun in 1954 to facilitate the mounting of WRAP exhibits (almost all coordinators of WRAP shows belong to Awards Chair Jill Jensen (20-22) WRAA and volunteer their time), and to encourage the approximately W8849 Deer Run Trail., Cambridge, WI 53523 600 members of WRAA to participate in WRAP shows and other art (847) 275-6540 or [email protected] activities. WRAA provides news of WRAP shows and WRAA events Evening with the Arts via Contour Notes newsletter; a website (www.wraawrap.com); and a Anne Irish (18-22) calendar. By establishing a substantial endowment fund dedicated to 3900 Sumac Circle, Middleton, WI 53562 WRAP, WRAA has assured that WRAP will continue into the future. (608) 836-1430 or [email protected] WRAA also promotes teen art through its Statewide Teen Art Mentor Tiny Treasures Program competition (STAMP), and encourages younger children Beverly Larson (17-20) 1867 Briarwood Ln., Fitchburg, WI 53575 through its Bridging Generations events. In addition, WRAA solicits (608) 835-7388 or [email protected] about $4500 in cash awards from members and benefactors. These Youth Programs awards are given out at WRAP’s annual State Art Exhibition and Jeanne Ferreira Coordinator (17-20) Conference (also called State Day). For the State Day weekend, WRAA 9041 Paddington Parkway, Verona, WI 53593 produces a color catalog of the exhibit and also hosts an Evening with (608) 334-5063 or [email protected] the Arts reception for artists, family, and friends. Bobby Walker STAMP North/Wausau Thanks to the joint efforts of WRAA volunteers and WRAP staff, (appointed) 3700 Mount View Ave., Weston, WI 54476 hundreds of Wisconsinites each year have the satisfaction of exhibiting (715) 298-3194 or [email protected] their work at WRAP shows and sharing ideas with other artists. By participating in both programs, these artists are contributing to the Bridging Generations Rita Carpenter (appointed) continuation of this important statewide opportunity. 6677 W Thornapple Dr., Janesville, WI 53548 (608) 289-6876 or [email protected] Angela Johnson, MFA, MA, MA-Art Education Crown for a Day Director, Wisconsin Regional Art Program Sherry Ackerman (17-20) Division of Continuing Studies 1205 N. We begin a new year and a new decade in 2020, and it is looking bright and shiny. As every year begins I try my best to pick a theme not only for my artwork but for my journey through the year. I recently came across a mantra that I decided to adopt this year...”I’m about to walk into the greatest year of my life!” This will be a challenge since I have had pretty great years in the past. I am trying to decipher how I might make this year stand out above others. I decided that I should tackle it a bite at a time, and since my role at WRAA is the newest part of my life, it should get my attention first. WRAA is beginning its’ 66th year and the Board of Directors and I wish to make it a memorable year. We have started by reviewing our mission. The WRAA mission reads as follows: The purpose and goals of the organization shall be: - to educate the members of the Association and the general public to the fields of creative applied visual arts - to foster an awareness and appreciation of creativity and encourage the development and growth of artistic endeav- ors in Wisconsin - to provide a framework for the exchange and dissemination of ideas, developments and other diverse matters of common interest to the creative arts community. With this mission in the forefront of our thinking, we are planning some new and exciting changes to WRAA. We hope to incorporate more education opportunities for our members and to exchange and implement ideas with the staff of WRAP for our upcoming Evening with the Arts in Wausau to make the experience more meaningful for all of you. We have been fortunate enough to receive an anonymous donation that will be put to use for some of this work. We are also excited about the possibility of giving our organization a new look. The Board of Directors have been working diligently on a little bit of a face lift for us. Our past president, Mary Ann Inman has been at the table with us and is very supportive of a fresh look. I said I wanted to start out small but when I outline our path it seems pretty daunting. We will look to you, our members, for guidance along the way. Keep your eyes on Contour Notes for upcoming news. This year will also bring some changes in the Board of Directors as elected terms are coming to an end. Immediate changes are as follows, Tiny Treasures, which has been so skillfully and lovingly handled by Sherry Ackerman will be headed up by Bev Larson; Sherry will be keeping Crown for a Day; Treasurer will be filled by Becky Herb; Awards has a new member at the table Jill Jensen; and Bridging Generations will be handled by Rita Carpenter. WRAP Liai- son and grant writer is vacant for now, so if you are interested in joining in the fun, let me know. So until next time, take your first step to make this year your greatest year... Make Art! Jeanne Ferreira

2019 Fond Du Lac WRAP By Rober C Gustafson, Coordinator The workshop and critique were held at The Fond du Lac Senior Center. The weather wasn't the nicest, but had a crowd of 25 for the morning workshop. Leif Larson, an artist from Oshkosh gave an excellent presentation of his work. A painter and water colorist, his artwork is very vibrant with a concept of whimsical forms. Very engaged with his audience, we didn't break for our usual long lunch. Definitely kept everyone's interest. We had coffee and hot tea for everyone and lots of goodies to munch on. The afternoon critique was given by Alice Tzakais, an artist and art teacher. A very constructive and positive critique. Very engaged with the audience, about 20-25 people for the afternoon. Was just an awesome day with everyone's art.

2019 Lac du Flambeau WRAP By Sue & Denny Robertson, Coordinators Dillman's Art Workshop Retreat in Lac du Flambeau, WI was happy to host its first-ever WRAP Exhibition on Friday, September 27, 2019. More than 80 pieces were submitted by artists from Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, and Minnesota. Because of Dillman's unique reach to artists, this was a very diverse exhibition. Artists ranged in age from 14 to 84 years old, with compositions such as handmade books, a warrior's staff sculp- ture, abstract collage and oil paintings. Some of the paintings were purchased at the WRAP show by Marshfield Clinic, for hang in its newly built addition in Minocqua. Participants who came to the workshops were in for a treat! The first workshop instructor (and judge of the show) was David R. Becker, TWSA artist, illustrator, and art instructor. David spent an hour demoing watercolor techniques and answering questions. Fine art instructor and artist, Sandie Bacon, demoed and spoke about acrylics and the new mediums, like fiber paste, and how to use them. She is also a representative for Golden Paints, and was able to bring a small bag of samples for each workshop participant. Sandie also gave participating high school students a box full of Golden products to test out at their schools. Dillman's enjoyed hosting a WRAP Exhibition, and looks forward to hosting another WRAP show this July. 6 November 30, 2019 ~ Beloit Art Center, Beloit, WI Beloit Coordinator: Jerry Sveum WRAP State Awards Michael Hall, Janesville Honorable Mentions Spring Judy Arvidson, Cary, IL Oscar Luna, Rockford, IL True North Martin Luther King Alice Blue, Beloit Deb Shimondle, South Beloit, IL Spring Mountainside This Little Piggy II John Bittner, Milton Susan Porubcan, Jefferson Aerial Hunter Olds Seeds Tammy Bozer, Woodstock, IL Norm Starks, Beloit I Will Light Your Way Back Home Again Jake Bussie, Janesville Carol Spitznagel, Beloit Deadliest Catch Elderly Lady Leslie Crowhurst, Loves Park, IL Katherine Weber, Woodstock, IL Pecatonica Farm Soft Landing Connie Fry, South Beloit, IL Denice Stace-Noughton, Madison Changing Seasons Bee Collector Gillian Graffy, Burlington Anita Wildermuth, Clinton, IL Bridge at Night MnM! 7 2019 WRAA Annual Report Beverly Larson, WRAA Treasurer As in the past, the WRAA Board of Directors would like to share with you our financial condition and the benefits of membership in WRAA. The Board man- ages an annual budget of over $40,000. The WRAA budget is entirely separate from the budgets for the WRAP regional workshops and the State Day Exhibit luncheon. Those budgets are handled by your local WRAP coordinators and the UW Division of Continuing Studies. WRAA has provided funds to the UW DCS to supplement their budget. In 2019 WRAA again provided many hours of volunteer support for WRAP, including collecting the registration and luncheon fees for the State Day Exhibit. Those monies were set by the UW and forwarded to the UW to pay for State Day expenses.. WRAA is the custodian of nearly $13,000 in endowments. Donated by current and past WRAA members, the endowments are a way to continue to recognize and encourage Wisconsin’s talented artists. These reserves and the interest they generate are used by WRAA to fund specific State Day Awards named for these donors. During 2019, WRAA income exceeded WRAA expenses because of a generous donation from an anonymous donor. It also explains why our cash reserves are up significantly from 2018. The Board continues to review operations to make sure that we make the most appropriate use of the resources we have. In con- junction with Angela Johnson, the Program Director of the Wisconsin Regional Art Program, the Board is continuing its efforts to ensure the sustainability of WRAA and WRAP Income In 2019 WRAA income was over $50,000. WRAA income is derived primarily from membership dues, program entry and registration fees, donations and grants. WRAA has just under 500 members, with most paying annual dues. Most of our donations are targeted for State Day Awards and are collected annually. Our income for 2019 was up substantially due to a generous donation from an anonymous donor. When the Board meets in February, we will decide on the best use of this gift. We also receive grants from both the Wisconsin Arts Board and the Fond du Lac Area Foundation. The annual Fond du Lac Foundation Berkholtz Publication Fund grant is ongoing and targeted to support our publication of Contour Notes. Our grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board is conditional—we must reapply for the grant every two years and report on our use of the grant monies. In 2019 our annual grant was again $2100. Program income is derived from registration fees for many of our special programs such as STAMP and Evening with the Arts. Our State Day Tiny Treasures competition is our major fundraising effort for the year. It provides income from both the entry fee and sales. It provides another opportunity for artists to compete for special awards and recognition. In 2019 there were over 300 entries from 100 artists resulting in net proceeds of just over $4,900. We also generate some income from the sale of our publications. Members have found the Timely Treasures pocket calendar to be a nice Christmas gift. Expenses WRAA publications comprise the majority of our expenses. Included here is the printing, mailing and editing of Contour Notes and the State Exhibit Color Catalog; the cost to maintain the WRAA website; and printing the Timely Treasures pocket calendar. The handy pocket calendar spotlights the wonderful entries in the Tiny Treasures competition and provides useful information on the date of WRAP sessions scheduled in the coming year, including when to drop off art. Another major expense comes from the awards given on State Day. State Day was held in Madison in 2019 and WRAA presented nearly $5,000 to State Day award winners. In 2020, State Day will be held in Wausau, WI at the Center for the Visual Arts. Program expense covers programs such as Tiny Treasures and STAMP. WRAA presented over $800 in awards for these programs in 2019. WRAA promotes our youth programs and Jeanne Ferreira will continue as the STAMP and Bridging Generations coordinator. We also host “Evening with the Arts” each year before the annual State Day Exhibit. “Evening with the Arts” is a great opportunity to meet and mingle with other artists. WRAA also presented the Tiny Treasures and STAMP awards at this event. In 2019 WRAA provided over $1,500 in support to WRAP through donations from our membership.

8 A new expense that began last year is for membership software that WRAA is cur- rently evaluating. More information about the new system can be found on page 19. Administrative expenses include the cost of professional services and other Board expenses. Lindroth Publication Fund As of 11/30/2019, the balance of the Lindroth Publication Fund was over $97,600. A special match event in honor of Mary Lou Lindroth was held at this year’s State Day. Current and past Board members matched donations collected at State Day. A total of $2,072 was added to the Lindroth Fund from the donations, the match and other donations received throughout the year. WRAP Endowment Fund

Managed by the University of Wisconsin Foundation, the WRAP Endowment Fund is slightly over $179,500. The interest from this fund is now used to supplement the UW-Madison Division of Continuing Education budget for WRAP and the State Day Luncheon.

We’re Changing our Name because We’re Changing UW’s WRAP exhibits began in 1940 as a state-supported outreach arts program. We—WRAA (Wisconsin Regional Artists Association)—are a separate, distinct private non-profit group that began in the mid 1950s to support WRAP programs. Since that time we’ve expanded and added other endeavors, such as, awards for WRAP winners, Tiny Treasures, Evening with the Arts, the Timely Treasures Calendar and a broad array of youth programs both for elementary age artists and teen artists—Bridging Generations and STAMP (Statewide Teen Artists Mentor Program). Because of our expansion it’s time to change our name to better reflect our broadening outreach to a wide array of Wisconsin artists. Our mission will always include support of WRAP. But we want to emphasize our distinctiveness and continue to grow and do more. The WRAA Board has come up with over 20 possible names and researched the ones that are not already in use by other groups. The top three choices are: - Wisconsin Statewide Artists - Association of Wisconsin Artists - Wisconsin Association of Artists We need input from all WRAA members. If you haven’t voted online, please fill out the form below and tell us what name best represents our mission of supporting Wisconsin artists and the development of their creativity? Deadline for paper ballot is February 29. We'll report the results of the vote in the Summer issue of Contour Notes that you will receive in May. We'll use the new name going forward and formally confirm it in Wausau at 2020 State Day.

2019 Woodruff WRAP By Christine Metropolos-Friedrich Coordinator. Photos by Christine Friedrich This year’s Woodruff WRAP was held at Howard Young Medical Center and included 21 artists and 50 pieces of artwork. An enjoyable day was had by all, as artists and guests were able to get their “art on” by creating unique abstract art under the guidance of artist Bryon Black, judge/presenter. Bryon Black of Woodruff, WI, creates a long-lasting impression through his perspectives of wildlife, landscapes, people, and abstract art. His dream like oil paintings come to life with movement and ab- stract magic. Abstraction is a common theme in Bryon’s work. Bryon provided an in-depth lecture on “Abstractionism – Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How.” Bryon’s enthusiasm for showing subjects in motion, and their symbiotic connec- tivity to their environment was both contagious and captivating. The afternoon critique proved to be very informative and in-depth, creating a buzz of conversation and queries. Thank you, Bryon!

Jean is an amazing woman, she has led a most interest- ing life. She was born and raised on a farm in Kansas, a humble and poor environment. She is the youngest of 9 kids and the only daughter who went to college where she studied Home Econom- ics and Nursing. Her education didn’t stop there. When in her 40s, she earned a PhD in Social Psychology and became a researcher, administrator and educator. She retired as Professor Emeritus from the University of Rochester in upstate New York when she was 70. She used experimental research design in clinical settings to challenge that status quo. The research demonstrated the type of Long Shadows all done in grays to depict the mood. This information that helped patients cope with health care experiences painting has brought some to tears. and the type which did not help. The influence of her research can be observed in nearly every clinical setting today. At 75 Jean moved to Madison and needed something to do that wasn’t too physical. Finding a book on painting at the library her creativity began, experimenting with painting on junk mail. Then took a beginning watercolor class at the UW extension taught by Mary Ann Inman at the Meriter Retirement Community (now Capital Lakes). Jean continued to take art classes mostly with Mary Ann. She also expresses her creativity with sewing. Jean is not your typical artist. She doesn’t want to paint flowers and claims she can’t paint landscapes. In- stead she creates conceptual art. Coming up with a concept and finding a way to express it thru her painting. Such as her watercolor painting titled Long Shadows. Her concept was getting older, the painting included a walker, a cane, a bingo card, and a shadow of a man (using her boyfriend as a model). Attitude Adjuster is a Tiny Treasure watercolor painting of a glass of Scotch which made the 2020 Timely Treasures Calendar published by WRAA. Jean enjoys a glass of Scotch in the evening before dinner and has a 90 year old boyfriend of 5 years. I so want to be like Jean when I get older. I’ll leave you with a quote from Jean, “The cognitive processes of a painter and a scientist are similar. Both have to find a way to represent the abstract concept concretely. The scientist has to find measurements that represent the concept and the artist uses the tools of paint and brush to make an image that represents the concept.”

12 2019 Janesville WRAP Arra Lasse, Coordinator. Photo by Deanna Sorenson. On August 2nd and August 3rd, 2019 the Janesville Art League and L'Atelier Studio hosted their 2020 Janesville WRAP event at the Janesville Performing Arts Center, Janesville, WI. This year's theme, "Perception" was inspired by the artwork of Wisconsin native, Georgia O'Keefe. The committee selected several O'Keefe's "perceptive" quotes, which were available for purchase, and hung them among the show's artwork. Mon- ies raised from the quote sale were added to the JAL scholarship fund. On the evening of August 2nd the two organizations hosted an artists' Reception for the community and for the participating artists. During the evening the gallery goers were invited to vote for their favorite artwork. In addition a Treasure Chest of new and gently used art supplies, frames, magazines and books were available for purchase. During his power point presentation, he shared informa- tion about the tools he uses, books he recommends and he answered a field of questions. In the spirit of the theme, Mr. Jewell graciously brought a blank canvass on which he had outlined an O'Keefe motif. The attending artists were invited by the hosts to paint during the day and complete the composition. After lunch, Mr. Jewell presented and critiqued the artwork which received State and Honorable Mention awards. Voting for the People's Choice awards and the Treasure Chest sale continued during the day. At the end of the event the three winners of the People's Choice awards were announced and an auction was held for the group painting. The Janesville Art League and L'Atelier invite you to consider entering their event next summer and share in the passion of art.

13 WRAP Initiatives for 2020 As the WRAP program turns 80 years old this year, the WRAP office is looking back to move forward. Below are three initiatives from 2019 and a progress report on what we have accomplished and how we plan to continue to work towards these goals.

1. Build capacity for more participants to attend WRAP workshops and State Day, spread awareness of this rich and historic program and work to diversify participants. Here are some of the ways we are doing this: • Grow new WRAP programs (Waunakee is a new location in 2020 and Lac du Flambeau was a new site in 2019). More possi- bilities in the works! • Foster relationships in areas of the state that do not currently have WRAP’s and continue to make connections with local art clubs and organizations. • Ongoing outreach to UW system schools and regional branch libraries to learn about WRAP. Continue with WRAP newslet- ter, Facebook page and blog. • Continue our partnership with the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences Arts and Letters who put out the quarterly magazine, Wisconsin People and Ideas – a box of complimentary magazines will be sent to each regional site before each workshop to be shared with participants. The magazine contains articles and personal stories that embody the Wisconsin Idea around our state including articles on mid-career artists and photo journal essays. • We received a complimentary full page ad for State Day in the WPI magazine. • Midwest regionalism tours were offered by docents, both Friday and Saturday during the State Day conference at the Chazen Museum of Art. • New partnership with the Writers Institute Annual Conference. Five paintings from WRAP’s permanent collection were cho- sen as prompts for creative writing short stories. Judges will choose the most creative descriptions hand out awards during the conference. https://uwwritersinstitute.wisc.edu/contests/ 2. Support regional coordinators with changes to the WRAP website to navigate how the toolkit can be best utilized. • Coordinators had good and constructive conversations at the annual gathering before the State Day conference began, chatting about what is going well and what can be improved. • Small changes are being integrated into the coordinator toolkit - to make it more intuitive and user friendly. Short videos and condensing information are coming.

Like us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/WisconsinRegionalArts/) and share art news you find inter- esting. Your word of mouth is our most productive outreach!

3. Create avenues to make the WRAP permanent collection more visible. Many of the artworks are currently on view in the Continuing Studies building on campus at UW-Madison. •Funds were written into the Anonymous Grant to build a shelving unit on casters to better and more securely store larger pieces of the permanent collection when not on view. This will be built later in the spring. •“WRAP Turns 80” exhibition of works from the permanent collection (as well as an overview of WRAP history) will be on view for 6 weeks at the Kohler Art Library (located below Chazen Museum of Art). An opening reception with birthday cake will held on Friday April 24th from 5:30-7:30pm in Paige Court at the Chazen Museum of Art. Exhibition will open April 14th and be on view through the end of June. The Chazen Museum of Art is located at 800 University Avenue, Madison, WI 53706. •Since last January, we have had three Service learning in Art students and 2 WRAP interns work with the WRAP permanent collection, creating a PDF book and helping to curate the exhibition that will be at the Kohler Art Library. Fundraising for the Future The Wisconsin Regional Art Program (WRAP) has been a tradition of artistry, community and personal growth for 80 years, touching the lives of thousands of Wisconsin artists over the years. This was apparent when the WRAP and Wisconsin Regional Artist Association (WRAA) community celebrated the 2019 Art Exhibition and State Day Conference at the Pyle Center in Madi- son in September. We hope this annual event reminds you that it is the generosity, volunteerism and loyalty of Wisconsin artists who create “art for the sake of art” that have kept this program going for 80 years strong. The WRAP office sent out a digital year-end ask for donations. I kindly ask you to consider both WRAP and WRAA in your giving plans to ensure the future of this important pro- gram and help us to move forward into the next 80 years.
