Did you know… When we visited Cambridge City in November, at Histon, the talk of their committee room was the new stadium development project. The club’s official website states; Initial work at the new stadium site in Sawston is poised to start in the coming weeks. The actual stadium construction looks likely to be authorised in May with building work anticipated to start shortly afterwards.

Once this initial work is completed, the focus will then turn to the construction phase which will really excite our supporters and give them belief that our years in the wilderness are coming to an end”.

The site in Sawston will see a 3,000 capacity stadium and community facility built which will be a new home for Cambridge City after they vacated their historic Milton Road stadium in 2013

In the bar The North Derby is on BT before our match, then join us for a drink after the game to watch West Ham take on Newcastle live on Sky.

On this day in Rovers history… Rovers have only lost three games on this date in their 135 year history. Notable results on this date include two semi final wins, firstly against St. Neots in 1929 in the Hinchingbrooke Cup in a game played at Huntingdon, then again in 1935 when Arlesey Town were beaten at home in the North Beds. Charity Cup.

Most recently on this date, Rovers drew 3-3 with Desborough Town in 2013. Sam Macrae scored twice and Josh Bamford got the other in front of a crowd of just 39 people.

In recent weeks, The Tony Joyce and Stuart Mellon Revolution have seen Kempston becoming tougher to beat. Having a settled side for a large part of the run that has seen the club lose just three of their last thirteen has yielded success. Rovers will need all of that positive energy in their current run of fixtures, having faced Bromsgrove and Corby on the last two weekends, next weekend sees the club travel to Peterborough Sports before facing Bedford Town.

The end of the season will see two sides relegated from this league to Step 5 of the non league pyramid, however with the FA’s regulations from 2014 regarding dressing room size coming into effect this summer, a lot of clubs are frantically trying to meet ground-grading standards. With Aylesbury FC already admitting defeat on that score, it may be that only one other side from this division will drop down this summer. Josh Crawley said his goodbyes last weekend ahead of his move to New Zealand. Taking a similar journey to former Walnut Sam Johnson, who spent time playing and coaching a youth side out in NZ. We would like to wish Josh all the success in his time on the other side of the world and look forward to welcoming him back in September.

The Girls & Ladies play host to Buntingford Town ladies tomorrow, as they run in to the end of their season. 2018-19 has been the first time since 2013 that Rovers have operated a senior ladies side, to see so many supporters come and watch them in their first year has been a huge boost to the young team.

The Under 16 girls side won through to the final of the County Cup last weekend, seeing off Flitwick Town and earning the right to face Watling for the trophy. The date is listed on the County FA website as Friday the 5th April at Hillgrounds. It would be fantastic to see as many supporters there as possible.

Some of our other youth teams are still in contention for both league and cup honours this season, keep your eyes and ears open for news of further successes as the season draws to a conclusion. Kempston Rovers 135 years of Football History

Kempston Rovers were formed in 1884 and entered the Bedford & District League. Rover’s first league championship was won in 1908 and twelve months later Rover’s retained the title while also carrying off the Bedfordshire Senior Cup and North Beds Charity Cup. The Walnut Boys, the club’s official nickname, comes from the large walnut orchard in Kempston around the time of foundation. This identity is carried forward by one of the main supporters’ groups at the club, “The Nuts on Tour”. 1973 saw the start of a new era as Kempston relocated to a new ground further down Hillgrounds Road. A magnificent season saw the Walnut Boys storm to the Premier title losing only once in 32 games. A golden period in the club's history saw League Cup successes in 1975 and 1977; the Beds Senior Cup was again captured in 1977 while the Walnut Boys reached the last 16 of the FA Vase in 1975. In 1986, the club moved again, this time to the current ground, their third in the same road. Kempston last won the county’s highest honour, the Beds. Senior Cup, in 1992, the fourth time the trophy has come to Hillgrounds. In 2002 Kempston Rovers and Kempston Colts began an alliance to pool resources/personnel under the name AFC Kempston. The youth teams at Rovers still go by the name “Colts”, keeping the history of youth football in the town alive. The beginning of 2005 saw the start of major re-developments at Hillgrounds Road with the building of new changing facilities and the building of an artificial training pitch, which is available to book all year round for training sessions, small sided games or just a kick around with friends. The new ground facilities were completed in 2006 and along with a new stand; on-going ground improvements and the existing clubhouse refurbished and ready to hire for functions and events, Kempston now have some of the best facilities in the area for non-league football. Midway through the 2013-14 season James Stoyles and Gary Flinn took over the 1st Team managerial duties before, in 2015-16, Rovers won the United Counties Football League Premier Division, with a thrilling final win on the last day of the season, a campaign in which they only lost one league game. This resulted in promotion and saw us move into the Southern League Division One which represents the highest level we have attained within the FA pyramid system so far. Since promotion, the club has twice narrowly missed out on a place in the end of season promotion play offs. On both occasions, finishing above some of the more established sides in the division. The club currently operates one of the largest youth systems in the county, with over thirty sides at various age groups and a senior development side. There is a supporters’ club that holds various functions throughout the season to support the first team.

Early years The club was formed in 1908 as Cambridge Town, the direct descendant of the earlier Cambridge St Mary’s club which had folded at the end of the 1907-1908 season following a dispute with the local Cambs FA. As a torchbearer for amateur football in the days when many clubs viewed the professional game with disdain, the new club affiliated itself with the recently established Amateur Football Association rather than the local FA. Trophy success came early, with a notable victory being achieved in the International Du Nord Trophy in 1912 after beating host club Tourquennois in Northern France. Cambridge Town amalgamated with an earlier Cambridge United club in May 1914, joined the Cambs FA for the first time and in turn gained entry into the FA Cup and the FA Amateur Cup for the first time, whilst retaining their AFA links. The club’s best ever run in the Amateur Cup came in 1928 when they reached the semi Final only to lose to Leyton at Fulham’s Craven Cottage ground. The club moved to the Town Ground in Milton Road in April 1922, having previously played at Purbeck Road (1908-1911), the Hills Road Bridge Ground (1911-1914), Trinity College New Field (1920-1922) and various other grounds in the period 1919 to 1920.

Town v Town A rivalry developed with Ipswich Town during the late 1920’s and mid 1930. Huge crowds attended these games at Milton Road, peaking at 11,916 in 1929. Both clubs’ success in the Southern Amateur League prompted invitations to join the newly formed semi-professional Eastern Counties League in 1935. Ipswich accepted, but the Cambridge Committee declined on account of their commitment to amateur football, so the two Towns went their separate ways. Within three years Ipswich had been elected to the Football League leaving Cambridge fans wondering what might have been! Cambridge Town moved on to the Spartan League, winning three league titles between 1945 and 1950. Shortly after progression to the Athenian League, Cambridge was granted City status in 1951 and with it the club’s name change to Cambridge City

Southern League Champions City finally left the amateur game in 1958 and joined the Southern League, gaining a place in the Premier Division of the Southern League ahead of local rivals Cambridge United in their first season. City won the Premier Division in 1962/63, edging out United in an enthralling title race with the local derby at Milton Road being witnessed by over 11,500 people. The absence of automatic promotion to the Football League put a lid on City’s ambitions. Nevertheless, City were regular challengers for the title and had the highest attendances in non-league football up until the mid-1960s. But City lost their way and were relegated to Southern League Division 1 in 1967/68. ] CAMBRIDGE CITY FC History 2

The turn of the millennium brought about more positivity at the Triangle as they consolidated their mid-table position in the Dr Martens league. More was to follow in 2005 as they just missed out on a play-off place under manager Rob Dunion. Dunion’s side went one better in 2006 as they were promoted once more.

Promotion back to the Premier Division followed in 1969/70, but this was the same season Cambridge United were elected to the Football League. City were left to reflect that, in 12 Southern League seasons together, they had finished above their local rivals in 7 of them.

Strife in the 1970s City finished Southern League runners up in 1970/71, but the latter years of the decade were dreadful. Relegation in 1975/76 saw crowds dwindle and the Club fall into decline. In 1977, Directors decided to return the Club to amateur status by joining the Isthmian League but, in scenes that would be repeated 30 years later, subsequent fans’ protests forced most of the Board to resign. The club thus remained in the Southern League.

Better times After the redevelopment of the ground in the mid 1980’s, City gradually improved and a new generation of fans mobbed their heroes after the 1985/86 Southern League Southern Division championship was won on the last day of the season. The goal scoring exploits of Gary Grogan were instrumental in City’s recovery, according him a ‘City Legend ‘status. Since 1993, City have reached the 1st round proper of the FA Cup five times and the 2nd round once, which is a far better record than achieved by the more illustrious City sides of the 1960s.

Ups and downs Recent seasons have been a roller-coaster ride for the City faithful. City’s best season for 30 years saw them finish runners up in the inaugural Conference South season in 2004/05, going on to lose in the play-offs. Off the field the ground had been sold to pay off mounting debts and matters took a turn for the worse in 2006 when the then Board announced an agreement to allow City to be absorbed into Cambridge United. With City on the brink of extinction, supporters were galvanised into a campaign which eventually forced Directors to resign, to be replaced by members of the Cambridge City Supporters’ Trust. The opening league match of 2006/07 was arguably the most memorable since the early 1960s – not merely because City won with a stoppage time winner at Havant & Waterlooville, but because it offered irrefutable proof that that City had survived a blatant attempt to kill it off and were very much alive and kicking.

CAMBRIDGE CITY FC History 3

City celebrated their centenary in 2008, but were demoted at the end the 2007/08 season due to over-zealously applied ground regulations. This decision ended 22 consecutive seasons in the 2nd tier of non-league football. City lost out to City in the 2008/09 play-off.

In the 2009/10 season, City won the Southern League Cup for the first time and finished one point shy of a playoff place. With the ground sold, a agreement was in place with Newmarket Town for the 2010/11 season but a last minute offer from our landlord meant that City had another season in its own stadium and celebrated by securing a place in the playoffs with a 4th place finish in the league. However, this was met with disappointment again as the team went down one nil away to Salisbury City. Another reprieve following a new deal with the landlord gave City two more seasons at Milton Road, 2011/12 and 2012/13. Once again the play-offs were reached but again an away defeat in the semi final, this time at Oxford City. This disappointment was however tempered by the news that the club has secured a site on which to build a new stadium and training complex. City ultimately missed out on a play-off spot in the 2012/13 season, but the club enjoyed a FA Cup run, with a televised first round proper home tie with MK Dons producing a fantastic night with a nil nil draw at Milton Road before losing in the replay at Stadium MK. With our lease on the stadium finally coming to an end, April 27th 2013 saw the last ever first team match at the ground before a large crowd with mixture of tears and smiles. Adrian Cambridge had the honour of scoring the last ever goal at Milton Road in the one nil victory over Redditch United.

New era A new era for the club commenced in August 2013 starting with a ground-share at Histon FC. City once again reached the play-offs that season but once again tasted semi final defeat, this time at home to St Albans City. The 2015-16 season saw City move to share at St Ives Town FC. Manager Gary Roberts left in the summer of 2016 after 13 years at the club. His replacement Dan Gleeson had a short and ultimately unsuccessful spell in charge, former player Robbie Nightingale taking over as manager in December 2016. Robbie won his first game in charge to boost City’s hopes of avoiding the drop. City’s playing record improved culminating in five wins and a draw in their last six games but ultimately it was not enough and the club were relegated to step four for the first time in our history. Hopes of bouncing straight back were dashed when City lost in the play-off to Hartley Wintney. After three seasons at St Ives, City are now back at Histon FC whilst waiting for the new ground in Sawston to be built. CAMBRIDGE CITY FC Player Profiles 1

Kempston came in to this game after Tuesday’s solid performance at Dunstable Town making one change to the starting line-up, seeing young Evan Beldon making his first league start for the club after impressing as a sub in recent weeks. A key figure in last season’s double winning under 18 side, Evan is one of a number of young players to have made a breakthrough this season. The game started in a lively fashion, with the visitors keen to make their presence felt. Ten minutes into the contest and Rovers had a glorious chance, Scott Joseph raced clear of a static back line and look for all the world as if he would open the scoring, but a last ditch tackle from veteran skipper Gary Mulligan thwarted the Kempston front man, the ball wasn’t cleared properly and a little bit of penalty box pinball ensued, the ball eventually going wide after being cannoned into the legs of Nathan Tshikuna. Jordan Wright saw a header saved from a corner before Ben Shepherd fed Joseph on the edge of the box. Joseph turned and fired goalward, requiring a deflection to carry it wide. The early Rovers dominance was for naught, as with their first meaningful effort on goal, Corby scored. A long, punted ball down field bounced awkwardly for the Rovers back line, allowing Stephen Diggin to nip in and opportunistically loft the ball over the advancing James Martin on the stroke of the quarter hour. After the goal, Rovers continued to press, Shane Bush tested Dan George in the visitors’ goal with a stinging shot, parried for a corner then Nathan Tshikuna curled a dangerous free kick wide. Ten minutes before the break, Joel Carta went to ground in the area. A large section of Corby support behind the goal were baying for a penalty but the referee was unmoved. A second goal did come for the visitors, shortly before half time. A deep cross from McWilliams wasn’t dealt with effectively and Crawford’s shot was deflected out to Carta who drove through a succession of bodies to beat the unsighted Martin. Rovers were forced into a change at the break, Cameron Hyde suffering a shoulder injury during a challenge with an opponent in the first half was unable to continue. Barely six minutes into the half and the change of shape payed dividends for Kempston. A long raking pass from Nathan Tshikuna found Scott Joseph bustling with two Corby defenders, the forward lifted a beautiful left-footed lobbed half volley from outside the area into the opposite top corner, Dan George managed to get finger tips to the shot but could do little more than help it into the net. After the goal, the game became attritional in midfield with neither side keeping the composure on the ball needed to break the other down. As Corby began to press forward more, Evan Beldon tangled with Crawford on the edge of the box. The referee deemed it to be worthy of a spot kick. Leading marksman Elliot Sandy stepped up and dispatched the penalty calmly to restore the visitors two goal lead. James Martin produced a fine save to deny Crawford moments later after Sandy had been denied by a Jordan Wright challenge. With fifteen minutes to go, Scott Joseph was put clear down the left, bursting infield and leaving his marker behind him. Unfortunately for Rovers, his finish didn’t match his superb build up play. Corby could’ve added a gloss to the scoreline in stoppage time as McWilliams broke away, but dallied on the ball in the area, allowing Rovers to get bodies back to cover and the chance was gone. Match Report Rovers battle for a solid pint

By Matthew Wilmot Dunstable Town 0 – 0 Kempston Rovers

Kempston put the disappointment of Saturday’s defeat out of their system with a resilient display at Creasy Park against Dunstable Town, but it could have been so much better. A late change to the starting line up saw Lewis Jones handed his first start for the club after Akubuine pulled up in the warm up. Rovers had the first sight at goal after just two minutes play. Great work down the left from Cameron Hyde saw the ball fall to Scott Joseph, but his volley was saved well by Coulson. Moments later, Goldbourne should have put the hosts ahead, getting in behind the Rovers back line only to skew his shot just wide. James Martin produced an amazing reaction save shortly after the quarter hour as a cross from the right was deflected back into the danger zone off Hyde, where Chris Wreh was waiting to stab the ball home, only to see Martin spring across his line and divert the ball out of harm’s way. Joseph had another chance on the half hour, but his speculative volley was over the mark. Martin produced another top save moments later when Wreh again threatened with a deflected shot, but Rovers giant keeper again proved his worth. Shane Bush, acting as a target man for this game, forced Coulson into action late in the half with a flicked header into the far corner that needed a reaching save to keep it out. Rovers perhaps shaded the latter part of the half, but failed to find the decisive cutting edge. Ten minutes after the break, Dunstable should’ve taken the lead. A whipped free kick from Okito found the head of Saul Williams, completely free in the six yard box. Somehow the Town man contrived to head wide when it appeared easier to score. The same player then did force a smart save from Martin when he shot through a crowd of bodies in the area, Martin gathering cleanly at the second attempt. Midway through the half a deep Kempston cross was nodded down by Scott Joseph in to the path of Shane Bush. The Rovers’ skipper lashed his shot just wide of the mark with what was perhaps the clearest opportunity of the night for the Walnut Boys. Nathan Tshikuna found the side netting after neat work following a throw in down the left hand side, before he released a glorious cross field ball to sub Evan Beldon, who drove at the heart of the Dunstable defence, before stinging the palms of Coulson in the home goal. Beldon then very nearly turned provider, breaking away down the right and cross in for the sliding figure of Shane Bush. The faintest of toe-ends on the ball sent it onto the post. Firmer contact would have resulted in a certain goal and the perfect smash-and-grab away performance, but both sides had to be content with a point. The result keeps both sides where they were in the table, fifteenth and sixteenth respectively. Rovers next encounter is on Saturday when they host Corby Town. Kick off at Hillgrounds is at 3pm.
