DIMITRIS PAKSOGLOU – Tenor Born in Greece. Dimitris Paksoglou first embarked on a career as an actor and studied at the National Superior School of Drama. As an actor he went on to appear in important Greek theatres, including the ancient theatre of Epidaurus, the Greek National Theatre and the Athens Megaron. He then decided to make a career change and studied singing at the Athens National Conservatory under the guidance of the famous baritone Kostas Paskalis and Marina Krilovici, graduating with distinction. He moved to France where he appeared with several opera companies and his success lead Greek National Opera to offer him a contract as a principal tenor. He continues to appear in leading roles with the company, which he combines with guest appearances abroad. Greek Dimitris Paksoglou does not sing Cavaradossi with the usual slightly emotional Mediterranean glow. His tenor is more powerfully virile, but also with beautiful splashes of tenderness. He makes his famous song for life with considerable intensity. AFTONBLADET – Lennart Bromander - Monday 10th February 2020 Dimitris Paksoglou who sang Cavaradossi is a real Italian tenor (although he is Greek) with plenty of power and clear tone up to the highest register. 1 The Greek National Opera is funded by the Ministry of Culture and Sports GNO LEAD DONOR: 2019/20 Introductory note The programme of the 2019/20 season of the Greek National Opera, including the celebration of its 80th anniversary, marks a new era of dialogue and interaction with the global developments in the art of opera, while focusing on the support of the artistic creation of major Greek artists. The programme designed by the Artistic Director Giorgos Koumendakis aims to increase the GNO’s artistic outreach through strategic co-operations and co- productions with international partners, invests in new creations through commissions, takes decisive steps towards the expansion of the operatic repertoire, investigates the interaction of lyric theatre with performance and visual arts and brings on stage unique opera, operetta and ballet masterpieces in ambitious productions. Four world premieres, one Greek premiere, seven new opera productions, two new ballet productions and three revivals of productions, as well as concerts, performances, projections accompanied by live music, shape the programme that will be presented at the Stavros Niarchos Hall and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus from autumn 2019 until summer 2020. In the new programme, along with the great artistic staff of the GNO, we will have the chance to enjoy the fruits of our cooperation with major artists, such as, among others, Yorgos Lanthimos, Olivier Py, Anita Rachvelishvili, Marina Abramović, 2 Graham Vick, Dimitris Karantzas, Nikos Karathanos, Katerina Evangelatos, Marco Arturo Marelli, Benoît Jacquot, etc. The season’s inaugural production is Bellini’s La sonnambula, directed by Marco Arturo Marelli, an historic production of the Vienna State Opera that will be presented for the first time by the GNO in October 2019.

  • DISCOVIDEOGRAFIA VERDIANA Aggiornamenti 2004-2005

  • Bizet's Carmen
Bizet’s Carmen - A discographical survey by Ralph Moore Given that Carmen is one of the two or three most popular and frequently performed operas in the world, it is remarkable how many misfires it has had in the recording studio; it seems that it is nowhere near as easy to bring off as the easy appeal of the music and visceral impact of the story might suggest. There are in total well over two hundred recordings of Carmen to choose from; of those, if live and radio broadcast versions are included, there are approximately one hundred complete recordings in French available on CD, of which in turn over twenty were made in the studio. I discount those sung in anything other than French, as if ever an opera demanded to be heard in its original language, it is Carmen; there are even performances such as one with a wonderful cast in Moscow in 1963 which, as I say in my review, is sung “in Russian by all apart from Del Monaco, who sings in Italian except when the whim comes over him to drop occasionally into bad French”- fun, but hardly a serious candidate. Despite the plethora of recordings available, I would suggest that only a handful really do the work justice; it is so easy to trot the old warhorse round the paddock without regard for its dignity. Another consideration is the eternal debate over whether the original spoken dialogues, Guiraud’s recitatives, or a hybrid of the two can or should be used and which edition either best represents Bizet’s intentions or is most effective musically; I do not propose to tie myself up in purist knots over that as so much depends upon the performers’ familiarity with the French idiom and the conviction of their delivery.
