    GOYA AND THE WAR OF INDEPENDENCE: A VIEW OF SPANISH FILM UNDER FRANCO (1939-1958) Diana Callejas Universidad Autónoma de Madrid At the end of the 1950´s, and with the Franco regimen solidly established in power, Spanish society would commemorate, without excessive display, the 150-year anniversary of the 1808 War of Independence. This conflict had brought the defenders of the monarchy into confrontation against those of liberal constitutionalism, and the conservative tradition against the ideals of progress. For many historians and intellectuals of the era, the war symbolized the authentic redefining landmark of Spain. It was an expression both of a people, who with their minimal military resources were capable of overthrowing the most powerful imperial force of the time, Napoleon, and of the extremely radical opposition to the pressure imposed by foreign ideals. The substantial volume of movies about Goya and the War of Independence in Spanish cinema demands a needed reflection on the importance of this topic. The characteristics found both in the image of Goya, a key figure in Spanish culture who fused in his work the secular and the sacred, and also in the War, a conflict characterized by traditional social change, will be decisive references when this time period on the big screen. They will serve additionally as metaphors in subsequent years. Few studies exist on this topic, and there are fewer still that treat the Franco period; hence, this article offers fundamental insight on how to interpret a period of such change in the Spain’s cultural and ideological history. Understanding this time period is essential to understanding the evolution and development of this view in a year such as 2008, a year which marks the 200-year anniversary of the War of Independence and consequently that of May 2, a date inextricably linked in today’s society with the life and work of Francisco de Goya.

    Nicole Terrien From Goya to the writing of madness: Then Again by Jenny Diski 41 FROM GOYA TO THE WRITING OF MADNESS: THEN AGAIN BY JENNY DISKI Nicole Terrien RÉSUMÉ L’intrigue de Then Again, de Jenny Diski, s’organise sur un double niveau, invitant le lecteur à voyager du XIVème siècle au XXème siècle, de l’Allemagne à l’Angleterre. Les épisodes du rêve, situés au Moyen Âge, tirent une grande partie de leur force évocatrice d’une série de tableaux de Goya. La mise en place des images de la peur s’opère à travers une transposition verbale de La procession des flagellants (1816). Le tableau se dessine peu à peu aux yeux du lecteur. L’effet de perception sur les personnages donne forme aux chapitres sur la contagion de la peur, véritable mise en mouvement des images. Le tableau unique cède alors la place à une véritable galerie de tableaux, dont les fragments reconnaissables constituent notre mémoire collective. Avec une grande économie de descriptions, le texte combine des réminiscences qui transgressent les limites temporelles et donnent à voir un héritage visuel. La filiation entre des peintres tels que Bruegel, Bosch, Goya, Munch ou Picasso, offre une nouvelle définition de la peur où causes et effets se superposent. La peur, ainsi intériorisée comme un réservoir d’images, se retourne contre les bourreaux, déjà ridiculisés par Goya dans Le tribunal de l’Inquisition (1816). Perçue en focalisation interne, elle donne à la victime le statut de héros/héroïne unique. Le texte, comme l’œuvre de Goya, s’éloigne du tableau panoramique pour présenter un dessin, une sorte de gravure en profondeur où l’humanité martyrisée prend la place du sacré à jamais détrôné.

Living a long and productive life, Goya was able to participate in and contribute to many contemporary and future international art movements, while remaining a traditional Spanish artist. If this seems to be a contradictory statement, all one has to do is examine his life and work to discover a man capable of astonishing transformations. He was a chameleon, changing his colors against the political and artistic landscape of his world. However, he never did this in an obsequious way; he was just not content with the status quo and was always open to new ideas. Hilary Macartney, University of Glasgow Abstract: This article considers an aspect of the complex relationship between the two best-known British Hispanophiles, Richard Ford and William Stirling, as the starting point for an examination of their response to Goya’s art, in particular, his Sta. Justa and Sta. Rufina, 1817 (Seville Cathedral). In February 1845, William Stirling went to Spain to carry out further research for his Annals of the Artists of Spain (1848), taking with him one of the very few copies of the suppressed edition of Ford’s Hand-book for Spain (1845). Among the paintings he made notes on was Goya’s Sta. Justa and Sta. Rufina, which Ford had attacked as a ‘David-like abomination’, claiming also that the models for the virgin martyrs were strumpets. Stirling disagreed with Ford’s assessment but, by the time his Annals were published in 1848, he had come much closer to Ford’s view. The article ponders the reasons for Ford’s attack on this work by Goya, and for Stirling’s change of mind.
