Christmas is with us once again and with it the usual rash of social functions. Not to be left out, the Club also puts forward its offerings for the season. Firstly, the annual Meroo Point weekend and, since we do not hold monthly meetings in December or January, we plan to hold barbecues at Weston Park this month and Uriarra Crossing in January. These events beside being relaxing get-togethers for members are also good opportunities for involving other family members especially those budding bush bashers of tender years. Java Natural Historq Tour

The Club has been approached by Robert Cribb of the ANU Research School of Social Sciences and Pacific Studies with an offer to organise a walking tour of Java around July or August next year for members. The fifteen day trip will cost approximately $asoo per person which will cover all travel, accommodation and some of the meals. To make the trip possible at this price it will be necessary to have around 80-22 people going. I have been given a detailed proposed itinery. If you are interested please contact me and I will arrange to send you a copy. I hope you have a great Christmas and a New Year with lots of pleasant Summer walking thrown in. S Greg Ellis poll NO ONN Q000 Krr.oc p4. Our December and January club meetings are outdoor events. Since there is no particular programme there mee4- erc will be more time to spend with your friends than at regular meetings. These two gatherings are centred on a smorgasbord, you bring your own BBQ (or otherwise) plus a dish to share- A pot luck trial run at a committee meeting was to everyone's satisfaction. If the December get-together is anything like it you will wish there be one every month. The Club will provide refreshments. After that play sport, talk shop or see the Walk Secretary about your plans. The December meeting is at Weston Park Varralumla on the 16th from 6pm onwards. A tarpaulin was left behind at the last meeting, if it is yours please see me I about it. Eddy IDe Wilde ZcwtLs s4-

Do you own an inflateble (no, not a lilo), or are considering buying one in the near future? If you would like to go on a trip with the grading L/R/W but are not up to joining the ranks of the tigers, then perhaps rafting is for you. I will be organising one or two half-day warm-up trips on our local waterway, with a view to having a three day trip on the Snowy or Shoalhaven during the Australia Day long weekend, if enough people are interested. I am currently changing addresies and work locations, so it may be a bit difficult to contact me. however try ringing 382517(h), or 413041(ah) and leaving a message or write to Ri-tB 151, Hoskintown, NSW 2621. FETTUCINI ALLA CABONARA

Inqredient5

376g packet of fettucini Powdered egg BOg grated Parmesan cheese 4 or 6 rashers of bacon 2Sg dried mushrooms Pepper Directions

1/ Soak the mushrooms, the longer the better. 2/ Chop and fry bacon (it helps if you are using a Trangia or similar contraption with a fryingpan lid). Add mushrooms. 3/ Take about 6 dollops of powdered egg and mix in approx. 3 dollops of water, just enough to get an almost egg like consistency. 4/ Mix in most of the Parmesan cheese (retain some for sprinkling over the ) completed dish) and add the pepper. 6/ Cook the fettucini (takes about 10 min once the water is boiling). 6/ Once cooked, drain the fettucini and tip it over the egg, parmesan and pepper mixture. Mix the egg thoroughly through the fettucini. By this stage you will probably be using both bowls if you are using a Trangia, or one fairly large billy. 7/ Add mushroom and bacon mixture. 8/ It is now ready to serve. Sprinkle grated Parmesan over the dish. It will feed three. John Xyatt

The Correspondence Cohinin

Have you thought about bushwalking in the Northern Territory. If so there is a professional group based in Darwin which runs bushwalking safaris specialising in the Kakadu area. The Federation of Bushwalking Clubs of 149W has a reunion annually and for 1988 the get-together is at Diggers Flat south of Danjera Dam (near Nowra) and is hosted by the Fairfield Bushwalking Club. The reunion is on the weekend of 9-6th of March and there is not only walking but skill and novelty events as well. This is a good chance to catch up with other bushwalkers. More details will be given nearer the time of the event. The Canberra Bushwalking Club library has just received some "mud maps" of various walks available (through National Parks and Wildlife) in national parks in 149W. These may be of interest for those who feel like walking further afield. If you want any more information about any of these items of interest contact me or any of the committee metbers. Kate Moore Concerning Conservation

All three representatives of the Canberra Bushwalking Club, that is Margot, Warren and myself, attended the Conservation Council meeting on November the 19th. Again, another call for volunteer workers to help with some administrative functions of the Conservation Council was made. Times when volunteers are most useful are when big mailing lists are being prepared etc. Why not organise to assist in good company and bring a few friends along. Tony and Chris (477808) would be happy to take your hames and contact numbers to organise a time for you to help them with their important work. The recent rally, held in Civic to demonstrate the concern of many Canberrans about NCDC planning decisions, has been one of the many areas where the Conservation Council has been busy

The consultants' report on options for the Rocks area (around Kingsley Street, Acton) is nearly finished. The view that this area should be retained for community use and not car parks or sale to commercial interests is maintained; it is the means by which current groups can do this that presents the difficulty. Although. our Club makes little use of the present Rocks facilities it is worth considering the general need for space community groups should be allowed in the central Canberra area. For instance should the Dickson Library not always be available to us space in Civic at reasonable cost would, I am sure, be most welcome.

On the forestry dilemma, the Victorian Government has declared some new national parks for the East area; Rodger . Errundundra and Coopracambra. A decision on 149W south-east forests should be made soon, hopefully securing the fate of many beautiful places. Have a relaxing Christmas. Julie Andro';i Cungoning

Nick Bendelli will be canyoning on most weekends during the school holidays If anyone is interested in going along please give Wick a ring on 319711(h) øøw vnvisHs

Friday January 8th - After work picnic and urban fringe ramble - S/E Map: ACT 1:100000. For this evening ramble along the corridor bring a picnic tea Cnot a barbecue) and some cool drinks you can carry in a backpack. We will meet at 6pm at the start of the walking track from Fine Island to Kambah 4 Fool. (This is at the most downstream of the Pine Island carparks.) We will walk about half an hour to be away from the hordes and their ghetto blasters and have tea by the riv!r. Continue another 1.6 hours along the track to Kambah Pool in the twilight. Phone bookings only, please ring the day before if you require transport to Pine Island of if you can offer to help with the car shuffle. Margaret Roseby (8B3679h) 0AW< ur00c5

Sundag November 22nd - Murramarang National Park - M/M Map: Kioloa 1:26000. Under clear blue skies a party of about 16 set off from Pebbly Beach along the fire trail to Durras Mountain. After walking through forest for most of the way we emerged into open grass land near the summit. This gave us magnificent views of the coastline from Montague Island to Jervis Bay, these were enhanced by the clear sky and azure blue sea. To the west could be seen the familiar shapes of the Budawangs. Pigeon House, Currockbilly. Mt Budawang etc. We continued along the fire trail now slowly descending towards the sea. To avoid the hordes at Pretty Beach we left the fire trail and battled our way through a short distance of leech infested scrub before arriving at Island Beach in time for lunch. Here we had a swim and a cup of tea before sauntering on to the next beach which we had to ourselves. Here we had another prolonged stay with more tea and more swimming and sunning before strolling along the foreshore rocks till we reached the fire trail back to Pebbly Beach. The one disappointment of the day was that the Baker's Paddle in Braidwood was closed so there was no pumpkin soup, but the fare at the Monkey Duck was not too bad. Many thanks to Rod for organising and leading this very pleasant and relaxing day out. Vance Brown

Editor's Notes

As this is the last IT of the year I would like to wish all members of the Canberra Bushwalking Club a very merry Christmas and good walking for the New Year. One slightly disappointing feature of this IT has been the lack of walk previews and especially walk reports. During the month there must have been between 100 and 200 people-trips and yet the only report is one I wrote myself. Surely a few people who can spend a whole day or a whole weekend out walking can spare half an hour or so to write about their trip. So how about making a New Year resolution to write the occasional article and thus contribute to your magazine. I would like to thank, though, all those who have contirbuted to IT during the year especially those who contribute regularly. It is they who make the magazine what it is.
