Representation, Emotion, and the Madrigal in Sixteenth-Century Italy Representation, Emotion, and the Madrigal in Sixteenth-Century Italy Russell Joseph O’Rourke Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the ExeCutive Committee of the Graduate SChool of Arts and SCiences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2020 © 2020 Russell Joseph O’Rourke All Rights Reserved Abstract Representation, Emotion, and the Madrigal in Sixteenth-Century Italy Russell Joseph O’Rourke This dissertation questions the dominant role that analogies to painting have played in the CritiCal reCeption of the Italian madrigal—espeCially its flagship teChnique, the madrigalism—and argues for a more historiCally sensitive approaCh to sixteenth-Century disCussions of musiC–text relations in that genre. This approaCh centers rhetoriC, understood broadly to encompass theories of style and subjeCt matter, emotional response, and fiCtional representation, as the primary field of study to whiCh musiCians turned in their efforts to theorize musiCal expression. In its final Chapter, the dissertation suggests that this rhetoriCal saturation of disCourse around madrigals also to some degree influenced the Composing of madrigals. Chapter 1 traCes the outlines of what I call the “Galileian critiCal tradition” between the publiCation of Vincenzo Galilei’s 1581 Dialogo della musica antica, et ella moderna and the present. This tradition is charaCterized by a tendency among writers to dismiss the madrigalism on expressive grounds and, as time passes, increasingly in visual terms. Returning to the sixteenth century, Chapter 2 argues that the phrase “imitating the words” (imitare le parole), whiCh was adopted by Galilei, Gioseffo Zarlino, and others in the mid- to late CinqueCento to desCribe those novel teChniques for the musiCal representation of text Commonly seen in madrigals, aCquires an affeCtive Connotation, in addition to its desCriptive meaning, when plaCed in the context of Contemporaneous literary studies of imitation (mimesis), espeCially those stemming from the reCovery of Aristotle’s Poetics. This affeCtive dimension of the imitation principle, first theorized by Aristotle but creatively elaborated by his Renaissance Commentators, highlights the cognitive pleasure that humans, beCause of a natural affinity for imitation, take from fiCtion—a speCies of pleasure, I suggest, relevant to the musiCal praCtiCe that “imitating the words” names. Turning from pleasure to passion, Chapter 3 makes a case for the presence of a “two-stage model for emotional arousal” (as I call it) in sixteenth-Century Italian musiC theory. Surveying this model’s foundation in physiologiCal, rhetoriCal, and natural-philosophiCal texts, I show how Zarlino adapted its principles to musiCal purposes in his 1558 Istitutioni harmoniche and then traCe the afterlife of Zarlino’s theory aCross a number of texts, including both musiC theory treatises and an epiC poem. Chapter 4, finally, analyzes a late CinqueCento madrigal Cycle—the three settings in GiaChes de Wert’s Ottavo libro de madrigali a cinque voci (1586) from the “Armida” episode of Torquato Tasso’s Gerusalemme liberata (1581)—as a series of musiCal “stimuli” for listener responses patterned on the theoretiCal disCussions studied in Chapters 2 and 3. In its attention to the Close-knit relationship between the expressive qualities of Wert’s musiC and the emotions they invite, this chapter follows the example of the ancient rhetoriCal tradition and its sixteenth-Century inheritance, whiCh emphasize the role of human psychology in determining the orator’s art.     UMass Amherst Department of Music & Dance presents Tasso at Ferrara – La Compagnia del Madrigale This concert highlights the distinguished musical legacy of late-Renaissance poet Torquato Tasso (1544-1595), with an emphasis on madrigal settings composed by musicians associated with the Este court of Ferrara (Italy), where Tasso spent a substantial part of his career. The concert is inspired by Prof. Ricciardi’s Tasso in Music Project (www.tassomusic.org), an NEH- funded digital edition of the early modern settings of Torquato Tasso’s poetry.     1 MIT Student Trecento Cacce and the Entrance of the Second Voice Most school children today know the song “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” and could probably even explain how to sing it as a canon. Canons did not start off accessible to all young children, however. Thomas Marrocco explains that the early canons, cacce, were not for all people “for the music was too refined, too florid, and rhythmically intricate, to be sung with any degree of competence by provincial or itinerant musicians.”1 The challenge in composing a caccia is trying to create a melody that works as a canon. Canons today (think of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat,” Pachelbel's “Canon in D,” or “Frère Jacques”) are characterized by phrases which are four or eight beats long, and thus the second voice in modern popular canons enters after either four or eight beats. One might hypothesize that trecento cacce follow a similar pattern with the second voice entering after the first voice's four or eight breves, or at least after the first complete phrase. This is not the case. The factors which determine the entrance of the second voice in trecento cacce are very different from the factors which influence that entrance in modern canons. In trecento cacce, the entrance of the second voice generally occurs after the first voice has sung a lengthy melismatic line which descends down a fifth from its initial pitch. The interval between the two voices at the point where the second voice enters is generally a fifth, and this is usually just before the end of the textual phrase in the first voice so that the phrases do not line up.

    A 16th Century Publication Who-Dun-it: Exploring implications of the double attribution of the madrigal “Canzon se l’esser meco” to Andrea Gabrieli and Orlande de Lassus. Karen Linnstaedter Strange, MM A Double Attribution Why was a single setting of “Canzon se l’esser meco” published in 1584 and 1589 under different composers’ names? For centuries, music history has ascribed this setting of a text from a Petrarchan madrigale to either Orlande de Lassus or Andrea Gabrieli, depending on the publication. It has been assumed the two original publications contain distinct creations of “Canzon se l’esser meco,” and to support this confusion, slight differences in notation between the two modern editions induce an initial perception that the two pieces differ. (See Figures 1A & 1B.). With a few moments of comparison, one can see that the madrigal published under Orlande de Lassus’ name in 1584 is the same piece attributed to Andrea Gabrieli by a different publisher five years later. In fact, no difference exists in the original publications beyond incidental choices by the two publishers, such as the number of notes printed per line and the notation for repeated accidentals. 1 (See Figures 2-5 A & B.) Suppositions and Presumptions The exactness of the two publications provokes interesting questions about issues of personal composer relations and influence, study by copying, and misattribution. In exploring all the possibilities, some quite viable, others farfetched, we can perhaps gain a clearer overview of the issues involved. On the less viable side, perhaps the piece was written simultaneously by each composer and, through some miracle, the two pieces turned out to be exactly the same.

Davies, Co-Chair Keyboard instruments are ubiquitous in the history of European music. Despite the centrality of keyboards to everyday music making, their influence over the ways in which musicians have conceptualized music and, consequently, the music that they have created has received little attention. This dissertation explores how keyboard playing fits into revolutionary developments in music around 1600 – a period which roughly coincided with the emergence of the keyboard as the multipurpose instrument that has served musicians ever since. During the sixteenth century, keyboard playing became an increasingly common mode of experiencing polyphonic music, challenging the longstanding status of ensemble singing as the paradigmatic vehicle for the art of counterpoint – and ultimately replacing it in the eighteenth century. The competing paradigms differed radically: whereas ensemble singing comprised a group of musicians using their bodies as instruments, keyboard playing involved a lone musician operating a machine with her hands.

However, modern vocalists in the United States often overlook or misrepresent Indigenous features in performances of New Spanish repertoire. Vocalists typically must make choices about vocal techniques alone and, largely for lack of resources, in uninformed ways.

If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This lay have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.
