Enjoy as a world TV premiere Giuseppe Verdi‘s complete operatic works and his Requiem in High Definition and with Surround Sound. All 26 operas, which were produced in coproduction with the Verdi Festival, the Teatro Regio di Parma and the Teatro Verdi di Busseto are presented in chronological order, giving the viewer the unique chance to discover the grand composers musical development as well as the musical and historical influences he was under. On the birthday itself the great composer is honored with the broadcast of his Requiem in a special open air concert starring D’Arcangelo, Grigolo, De Young and Di Giacomo. The L.A. Philharmonic are conducted by no less than Gustavo Dudamel. He gets engaged with Barezzi’s daughter Margherita. -

Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera
Verdi’s Un ballo in Maschera - A survey of the studio and selected live recordings by Ralph Moore Given the popularity of Un ballo in maschera, it is surprising how relatively few studio recordings it has received: only a dozen, considered below. I have added to those, for their worth and interest, five live radio broadcasts and two recordings of live performances. The most recent was recorded twenty-five years ago. I have excluded any not sung in Italian. It is performed and recorded under two guises: its original version, narrating the assassination of Gustavus III of Sweden and, recast to avoid the spectacle of a monarch being assassinated on stage, its adaptation under pressure from the Roman censors to a new location in Boston, Massachusetts, with the characters’ names changed accordingly; thus Gustavus rather absurdly becomes Riccardo, Earl of Warwick, governor of Boston during the British colonial period. Modern stage productions tend to revert to the Swedish setting but the only recordings below to do so are Karajan’s in 1989 and the live production with Pavarotti in Vienna in 1986. It is expertly structured, paced and balanced – close to flawless as operas go and nowhere as far- fetched in the action or as unbelievable in motivation as some others, as long as you make allowance for a bit of jiggery-pokery to do with fortune-telling and magic herbs. Its trio of main characters are credible and sympathetic; Riccardo/Gustavo is a likeable tenor-hero whose character is portrayed in some depth; he evinces the usual romantic ardour but also a sense of humour; Amelia is passionate and principled without being sentimentalised; Renato/Anckarström is not the vengeful monster of the type we see in Don Carlo in La forza del destino but a man wracked and tormented by the betrayal of his wife and best friend. -

DECCA DISCOGRAPHY >>I ITALY & Monte Carlo Until the mid-1960s it was taken for granted that the place to record Italian opera was Italy. After a few sessions in Milan (lost to EMI in 1954) and a recording with the Turin Symphony Orchestra during a visit to London in 1947 (AR11722-47), Decca settled on Rome from 1950-70, plus Florence from 1955- 63, with an excursion to Naples in 1964. Monte Carlo followed from 1967-69 and Bologna from 1973-77, but by then London had become the world’s capital for recording operas, whether Italian, French, German or English. Del Monaco was the reigning tenor from 1952-69 and Tebaldi the reigning soprano from 1951-73. Their successors Pavarotti (1964-99) and Sutherland (1959-87) recorded mainly in London and regular sessions in Italy only resumed with Chailly, in Bologna from 1986-93 and Milan since 1995. In the twenty-first century opera recording in Italy has regained something of the status it enjoyed fifty years earlier, though both Bartoli (from 1988) and Flórez (from 1998) have also recorded extensively elsewhere. >RVI VENUES Thirty-eight different venues were used, but only four (those in bold ) hosted ten or more entries, whilst twenty-one were only visited once. Evidently finding satisfactory locations in Bologna and Milan proved difficult. AULA ABSIDALE DI SANTA LUCIA, BOLOGNA, Emilia Romagna (1988), a 300 seat hall set in the apse of a church (1659), was visited twice in 1991-92 to record the local chamber orchestra. Puccini’s Suor Angelica - A survey of the studio recordings By Ralph Moore There are only ten studio recordings of Suor Angelica, all considered below. I have limited my survey to those with the sole addition of the 1951 radio broadcast – the first considered below – as a kind of halfway house between a live and a studio performance; it is one of only two mono recordings here, the other being the early EMI one. Two conductors - Bartoletti and Gardelli - have recorded the opera twice with a twenty-year interval between their interpretations, which is interesting. Post 1980, there are half a dozen live DVD recordings available which I have not considered, having confined myself to CD issues of studio recordings, the last of which was made as long ago as 1998 by Antonio Pappano – the final review here. In some quarters, my love of Suor Angelica will probably be considered the equivalent to expressing an attachment to André Rieu or to cherishing a collection of “My Little Pony” merchandise, as anything smacking of overt sentimentality is anathema to the modern, cynical Zeitgeist. However, one of opera’s most potent attributes is its ability to exploit the transformative power of music to ennoble or validate that which might otherwise appear trite or mawkish. It was Puccini’s favourite of the three works which make up Il trittico, and forms the climax of that triptych of one-Act operas. It is much gentler and more contemplative than the melodrama Il tabarro and the robust comedy Gianni Schicchi which precede it but if performed by a great singer-actress can produce an overwhelmingly heartrending effect, provided the listener surrenders to its power to move rather than exercising ironic detachment. -
