Scott Shafer Dr. David Scott This study is an exploratory look at the social world of indoor rock climbers, specifically, those at Texas A&M University. A specific genre of rock climbing originally created to allow outdoor rock climbers a place to train in the winter, indoor climbing has now found a foothold in areas devoid of any natural rock and has begun to develop a leisure social world of its own providing benefit to the climbers, including social world members. This study explored this social world of indoor rock climbing using a naturalistic model of inquiry and qualitative methodology, specifically Grounded Theory (Spradley, 1979; Strauss & Corbin, 2008). This research borrows from the literature on social world theory, serious leisure as well as specialization. This study confirmed indoor rock climbing to be a form of serious leisure for some participants. Furthermore, it found the social world of indoor rock climbing at Texas A&M provides a deep sense of belonging to some members who were found to coalesce at a mesostructural level into a confederacy of iv peers (R. A. Stebbins, 1993). Bouldering was found to be an avenue for social world entry for men but the female experience in social world entry was found to be different. The most prominent finding of the study was that the facility itself provides a place of belonging for social world members, even diverse and different groups which, outside of the social world, may be expected to come into conflict. Lastly, it was found that the social world has the ability to mediate conflict or negative experiences arising from competition and feelings of risk and fear. This exploratory study is expected to provide a framework for which to conduct further, more in depth studies into phenomena affecting the lives and experiences of indoor rock climbers. Furthermore this study has practical significance in assisting climbing wall managers to better understand the culture that surrounds and utilizes the facilities they operate. What began with mountaineering, participants striving to reach the top of key mountain peaks around the world, has evolved, in its most recent form, into participants climbing artificial structures housed inside warehouses, university recreation centers, summer camps, workout facilities and even malls and cruise ships. The unique social world that has evolved around the participation of some individuals in the climbing of these indoor structures is the focus of this study. In reality, how different is indoor rock climbing from outdoor rock climbing? Unfortunately, few studies of indoor rock climbers have been undertaken. At least one study incorporated both indoor and outdoor rock climbers (Rapelje, 2004), but no studies were found that looked expressly at the social world of indoor rock climbing. This paucity of available data is one reason for embarking upon this study. If one looks at anecdotal data from non-climbers and some novice climbers, they would suggest that indoor climbing and outdoor climbing are one in the same, however anecdotal data from experienced climbers reveals the groups are very different. ___________ This thesis follows the style of Journal of Leisure Research. 2 Indoor climbing

Bouldering walls General training walls with a duel function of allowing for the pursuit of physical excellence, as well as offering a relatively safe ‘solo’ climbing experience which is fun and perfect for a grass-roots introduction to climbing. There are two styles: indoor venues and outdoor venues to cater for the general public as a park or playground facility (Boulder Parks). Dedicated bouldering venues are particularly successful in urban areas* where local access to natural crags offering this style of climbing is not available.

    Analysis of the accident on Air Guitar The Safety Committee of the Swedish Climbing Association Draft 2004-05-30 Preface The Swedish Climbing Association (SKF) Safety Committee’s overall purpose is to reduce the number of incidents and accidents in connection to climbing and associated activities, as well as to increase and spread the knowledge of related risks. The fatal accident on the route Air Guitar involved four failed pieces of protection and two experienced climbers. Such unusual circumstances ring a warning bell, calling for an especially careful investigation. The Safety Committee asked the American Alpine Club to perform a preliminary investigation, which was financed by a company formerly owned by one of the climbers. Using the report from the preliminary investigation together with additional material, the Safety Committee has analyzed the accident. The details and results of the analysis are published in this report. There is a large amount of relevant material, and it is impossible to include all of it in this report. The Safety Committee has been forced to select what has been judged to be the most relevant material. Additionally, the remoteness of the accident site, and the difficulty of analyzing the equipment have complicated the analysis. The causes of the accident can never be “proven” with certainty. This report is not the final word on the accident, and the conclusions may need to be changed if new information appears.     1ŋ),%ŋŋČŋŋ1ŋ ,-3ŋŋČŋŋ&1,ŋŋČŋŋ ,3&(ŋŋČŋŋ#,!#(# MID-ATLANTIC COASTAL AND OCEAN RECREATION STUDY The Surfrider Foundation, in partnership with Point 97, The Nature Conservancy, and Monmouth University’s Urban Coast Institute, (the Team), and in collaboration with the Mid-Atlantic Regional Council on the Ocean (MARCO), conducted a Coastal and Ocean Recreation Study (Study) for the Mid-Atlantic region in 2013-2014. The Study engaged recreational users and the public in providing data on “non-consumptive” recreational use, including surfing, diving, kayaking, beach going, and wildlife viewing. This data was previously unavailable and fills a key gap in our understanding of coastal and ocean uses in the Mid-Atlantic. METHODS The Team used a web-based survey accessible by mobile phones, tablets, or desktop/laptop computers to collect data from respondents on recreational use patterns, trip expenditures, and demographics. To obtain this data, the survey included a series of questions and an easy-to-use interactive mapping tool, where respondents could mark the places they went to recreate over the last year. The Team then analyzed the resulting spatial data to develop maps indicating intensity of use for recreational activities in the region (see map insert). To promote participation in the Study, the Team conducted outreach to over 300 recreational groups and businesses throughout the Mid- Atlantic region. In total, Mid-Atlantic respondents completed nearly 1,500 surveys resulting in over 22,000 unique data points. STUDY FINDINGS Coastal and ocean recreation encompasses a popular and diverse group of activities in the Mid-Atlantic (see graphic below), resulting in major economic and social benefits to coastal communities.

We overnighted in Durango, stocking up on “essential ingredients” for a two-night camp in an area called the Chicago Basin, which as you will see, takes some doing to get to. Durango, founded in 1880 by the Denver & Rio Grande Railway company, is now southwest Colorado’s largest town, with 15,000 people. Left to right: Brett, Rick, Wayne provisioning essentials. Chicago Basin is at the foot of three fourteeners in the San Juan range that can only be reached by taking Colorado’s historic and still running (after 130 years) narrow-gauge train from Durango to Silverton and paying a fee to get off with back-pack in the middle of the ride. Once left behind, the next leg of the excursion is a 7 mile back-pack while climbing 3000’ vertical feet to the Basin where camp is set.

Purpose. To establish procedures and responsibilities regarding the administration of the Climbing Wall at the United States Naval Academy. 2. Cancellation. DIRATHINST 11100 . 5. 3. Background . The physical mission of the Naval Academy is to develop in Midshipmen the applied knowledge of wellness, lifetime physical fitness, athletic skills, and competitive spirit so as to endure physical hardship associated with military leadership and to instruct others in physical fitness and wellness. As part of this mission, the Naval Academy has added an artificial rock climbing wall, which will provide high quality and challenging physical education to its students. A thorough understanding by all faculty members and Midshipmen of their responsibility is necessary. 4. General Policies . a . Authorized Use of the Climbing Wall and Required Qualification: (1) The climbing Wall will be open to belay­ qualified Midshipmen and PE button holders during the DIRATHINST 11100.SA JAN 3 1 2014 following hours, except during periods of military drill, holidays (as promulgated by the PE Department) , and academic final exam periods: (a ) Monday-Friday: 1600-1800 (b) Saturday: 0800-1200 (2) Belay-qualified button holders will be permitted use of the wall only during established weekday lunch hour and evening climbing hours. Only belay-qualified Staff, Faculty, and their dependents over the age of 16 may climb during these periods.
