One characteristic of the Jarmel family of North Caldwell is that they always have a triumvirate of canine companions. Right now, Sookie, Shannah (pronounced Shay-nah) and Virgil are brightening their days. Shannah came to the family when an older dog, Chelsea, passed away, Maggie, the other dog at the time, was getting lonely. In turn, when Maggie passed away and Shannah got the hound dog blues, Sookie, a hound-beagle was welcomed into the Jarmel family. Virgil came to the family on a whim, while they were in Virgil, N.Y., they saw a sign for pup- pies and the rest was history.

Shannah, the oldest at nine, is calm, “she has a ‘leave me alone’ kind of attitude” said Deborah Jarmel, a senior at West Essex. “Sookie is the dominant, loud one” Jarmel added. But despite Shannah’s calm attitude, the Jarmel family can’t leave food on the counter for too long. “She once ate an entire pizza” said Jarmel. The family had left it in the box on the counter, and when they returned, the box was empty and Shannah was in trouble. Even more outrageously: Shannah had a knack of eat- ing pool cleaner in her puppy days. And though Sookie is the most bombastic of the three, “she’s terrified of water”, while the other two will swim.

Dinner time is somewhat of an ordeal at the Jarmel house as each dog has his or her own special dietary needs. “Virgil just wants everyone else’s food in addition to his own” said Jarmel.

Jarmel has gotten used to a lifestyle with dogs, “It’s never quiet, but I like it that way” said Jarmel.
