Ragga verdween in de jaren tachtig nauwelijks uit dancehall als de dominante vorm van Jamaicaanse muziek. DJ Shabba Ranks en zanger team Chaka Demus en Pliers bleek blijvende dan de concurrentie, en hielp te inspireren een bijgewerkte versie van de Rude Boy cultuur genoemd Raggamuffin. Dancehall was soms gewelddadig in lyrische inhoud, en verschillende rivaliserende artiesten haalden de krantenkoppen met hun vetes in heel Jamaica met name Beenie Man versus Bounty Killer. Dancehall kwam voort uit baanbrekende opnames eind jaren zeventig door Barrington Levy , met Roots Radics- steun en Junjo Lawes als producer. The Roots Radics waren bij uitstek de begeleidingsband voor de dancehall-stijl. In de jaren tachtig nam de reggaemuziek van buiten Jamaica toe. In de jaren tachtig kwam het dubtijdperk in Jamaica tot een einde, hoewel dub een populaire en invloedrijke stijl is gebleven in het Verenigd Koninkrijk, en in mindere mate in Europa en de VS. Dub in de jaren tachtig en negentig is samengevoegd met elektronische muziek. De late jaren zag groot lokaal succes voor dancehall-artiesten als Popcaan , Vybz Kartel , Konshens , Mr. Vegas en Mavado. In het volgende decennium zouden andere artiesten zoals Tommy Lee Sparta , Alkaline en Cashtro Troy ook opkomen in de dancehall-scene. Eind zag muziek op westerse markten invloeden van dancehall in de popmuziek, waaronder Drake's " One Dance " en " Controlla " en Rihanna's " Work " Reggaefusie ontstond eind jaren negentig als een populair subgenre.
