Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri inaugurated the newly constructed office building of the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) situated near ISBT on Saharanpur Road here, on Thursday. The office complex with a built up area of 1618 sq m, has all the amenities, and has been constructed at a total cost of about Rs. 11 crores. In his address on the occasion, Chief Minister Shri Khanduri said that Dehradun has a rich and glorious ancient history and tradition. The city which houses several world class educational and research institutions is known throughout the world for its beauty and grandeur. He said that in view of the rising population, the role and responsibility of the MDDA assumes greater significance in order to bring about an orderly and planned development here. The Chief Minister said that MDDA’s employees should work by showing greater sensitivity to the people’s problems. On the occasion, he also laid emphasis on making the single window system more effective so that the general public is not put to any inconvenience. Chief Minister Shri Khanduri said that as much as the MDDA employees, the citizens too have an equally important role to play in maintaining the natural form and beauty of the city. Praising the magnificence of the newly building and its ambience, the Chief Minister said that he expected the employees to show similar spirit in terms of work culture too. Chief Minister Shri Khanduri said that Darban Singh Negi – the first Victoria Cross recipient; Gabar Singh; Veer Chandra Singh Garhwali – the hero of independent Peshawar incident; Som Nath Sharma - the recipient of India’s first Param Veer Chakra; Gajendra Singh, who attained martyrdom in the terrorist attack on the Mumbai’s Taj Hotel on 26 November, 2008, and, Surjan Singh Bhandari, who attained martyrdom in the terrorist attack on the Akshardham Temple in Gandhinagar, Gujarat on 25 November, 2002, were all from Uttarakhand. He said that altogether 255 soldiers from Uttarakhand laid down their lives in the 1971 Indo-Pak War which yielded historic win for India while 68 others soldiers from the State were decorated by the Government of India with different gallantry awards, he said. The Chief Minister said that in 1971, Pakistani forces had launched a planned attack on India’s borders in response to which the country’s armed forces gave a befitting reply.

These facilities, which form part of the Chakrata Road Widening Project, were dedicated to the people at a glittering function held on the occasion. Addressing a large public gathering comprising of the displaced traders and residents of the narrow part of Chakrata Road starting from the Clock Tower, Chief Minister Shri Khanduri expressed his gratitude to them. He said that the development of the country and the state is possible with the assistance and cooperation of all the sections of the society. He said that many a times, personal interest is sacrificed for the sake of public interest. The Chakrata Road traders and businessmen have come forward to lend a helping hand and have paved the way for a new beginning in the shape of the ambitious project to widen the Chakrata Road, he said. He said that Dehradun is a favoured destination of travelers from the country and abroad but owing to rising population pressure, the city was unable to cope with the associated environmental and traffic conditions. The State Government is committed to develop Dehradun as a city of international standards, he said. Chief Minister Shri Khanduri said that while it is quite natural for the inhabitants of this section of the Chakrata Road to have developed emotional attachment to their respective places of living, the Government on its part has taken note of this fact and has kept their interests in mind while doing the needful.
