Upper / Head Job Description

Title: Upper School / Middle School Head Reports To / Evaluated by: Headmaster Education: Master’s Degree - Doctorate degree is preferred.

The Upper School / Middle School Head is responsible for the overall administration, coordination, and development of instructional policies, programs, and curriculum/instructional resources in the Upper School / Middle School. This position is responsible for creating and sustaining an environment of academic and professional excellence for students and faculty and a collaborative working environment with educational team members. The Upper School / Middle School Head is a key member of the school leadership team. The Upper School / Middle School Head leads the continued development and growth of grades 5 through 12, with support from the leadership team. Creativity and collaboration permeate the Upper School and Middle School learning experience. This person must be detail oriented, highly organized, and self-driven. A start date of a June 1, 2021 is desired.

This includes being committed to God’s biblical standards for sexual conduct (Luke 6:40). • Regularly attends a local, evangelical church, which has a Statement of Faith in harmony with the Davidson Academy Statement of Faith. • Shows by example the importance of Scripture study and memorization, prayer, witnessing, and unity in the Body of Christ. • Reflects the purpose of the school, which is to honor Christ in every class and every activity. • Motivates students to accept God’s gift of salvation and help them grow in their faith. • Leads students to a realization of their worth in Christ. • Has the spiritual maturity, ability, and personal qualities to “train up a child in the way he/she should go.” • Recognizes the role of parents as holding primary responsibility before God for their children’s education and is prepared to assist them in that task. • Maintains a personal appearance that is a Christian role model of cleanliness, modesty, and good taste, that agrees with any applicable school policy. Statements of Faith • We believe God has revealed Himself, His purposes, and His ways in the Bible, which is therefore absolute in its truth and authority over daily living. • We believe God is one, absolute in power and authority over all people. He has revealed Himself as Heavenly Father and is the first person of the Trinity. • We believe Jesus Christ is the second person of the Trinity, the physical embodiment of God; He is fully God and fully man, a mystery that calls us to worship. • We believe the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Budget: • Oversee middle school and high school teaching supply budgets • Approve all purchases for teachers • Oversee events based on budget • Oversee athletic, fine arts, STEM, STEAM, and theater budgets Professional Development: • Approve Middle School and High School teacher requests for professional development • Approve leave for professional development • Collaborate with Academic Dean to plan school wide professional development • Prepare for and lead Thursday morning professional development for both middle school and high school Management: • Approve time off requests for middle and high school staffs • Manage substitute teacher coordinator, and address problems with substitute teachers in the classrooms • Hiring for teaching and non-teaching positions • Assist with hiring of coaches • Holding faculty and staff accountable for daily expectations • Manage long term subs • Coordinate with elementary principal to allocate Title I resources • Assist in the management of all athletic events, especially parent concerns Academic Leadership: • Complete faculty evaluations for both middle school and high school faculty • Provide feedback to each faculty member based on evaluations • Establish clear and attainable expectations and goals for faculty • Hold faculty accountable for the fidelity of the instruction • Work with subject area department head to select appropriate curriculum • Monitor the academic and behavior goals for students to not impede the learning process Operational Roles: • Participate in planning the yearly calendar • Coordinate events between competing programs for the facilities • Supervise Prom, Homecoming, Coming Home, Fall Ball, 7th and 8th grade dance, etc. • Coordinate with DAA leadership to plan events • Attend DAA meetings • Supervise the planning of both US and MS chapel • Coordinate with security officer to plan emergency drills Communication: • Send needed communication to faculty • Send monthly communication to families • Provide information for admissions and marketing • Communicate on behalf of DAA to teachers in the middle and high • Coordinate Friends of the Arts (FOA) events • Communicate with DAAB • Work with Director of Communications to communicate all MS and HS events • Coordinate announcements in the morning and within the school day to keep interruptions to a minimum

Parent Relations: • Establish relationships with parents • Keep parents informed of important school events, both academic, athletic and the arts • Meet with parents at their request • Support teachers with difficult parent interactions Blackbaud: • Supervise the middle school and high school enrollment • Coordinate Blackbaud activities between IT, scheduling, counseling, etc. Discipline: • Supervise High School Dean of Students • Investigate behavior infractions • Determine consequences for student behavior • Communicate with parents regarding behavior infractions • Supervise In-School Suspension • Coordinate all discipline decisions between the Headmaster, Dean of Students, and the Director of Security for all middle and high school students • Manage the random drug testing program • Assist parents in determining a course of action when a child test positive on a random drug test Student Relations: • Build relationships with students • Walk through all middle school and high school classes on a random basis • Attend athletic and other student performance events Spiritual Life: • Approve chapel activities for the middle school and high school chapel • Consult with Dean of Spiritual Life to make course adjustment as needed • Coordinate activities between student counsel and spiritual life to plan service projects and ministry opportunities Administration: • Variable tuition committee meetings • Admissions committee meetings • Reviewing admission files • Academic leadership meetings • Consult with Headmaster on situations that might be problematic in the media or public relations • To perform other duties as assigned.
