AUDITION INFORMATION

WHEN: Saturday, March 10, 2018 – 10 AM to 5 PM; Auditions are made by appointment

WHERE: Recreation Program Center, 64 E Walnut Street, Westerville, OH 43081.

HOW TO REGISTER: Please visit www.westerville.org/arts and click on the audition registration link. This will take you to a form where you may enter your information and preferred time of audition. You will receive a confirmation email/phone call of your audition within two business days.

WHO: All participants must be 18 years or younger. Children must be 8 years old at the time of audition.

COST: All participants will pay a $100.00 registration fee if cast. Scholarships and payment plans are available for those in need of financial assistance.

HOW TO AUDITION: Groups of 10-12 performers will sing, dance, and read if needed in one hour blocks. You may audition for a specific role or for the ensemble. The dance audition will be movement based. No formal dance training is necessary.

● Please prepare 16 bars of “Prince Ali” AND 16 bars of “Finale/”. The sheet music is attached to the back of this packet. You will not need to bring sheet music to your audition. Links to the music will be available on the audition registration website so that you may listen to the music as you prepare for your audition. ● Wear clothes that are comfortable and appropriate. Please keep your hair tied back and away from your face. Wear shoes you can dance and move in. No flip flops or boots. Sneakers or smooth bottom shoes work well. ● HEADSHOT/RESUME: A picture is REQUIRED for your audition. Professional headshots are not necessary. A school photo or other clear photograph will be accepted. While resumes are not required for this audition, it is always encouraged to have a resume at the audition. This is particularly helpful if you have extensive dance or vocal training. There is a sample resume attached to back of the packet.

CALLBACKS: Callbacks for leads will be held on Sunday, March 11th from 2 PM – 5 PM at 64 E Walnut Street. You will be notified by email about a callback the evening of March 10th. You may be asked to prepare additional materials that we give you at the callback.

CONFLICTS: Please be sure to complete the attached conflict calendar. You will not be considered for casting if you do not record your full list of conflicts on this form.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTORS Hello Actors!

We are looking for energetic singers and movers to bring the story of Jr. to life. We want to see and hear your joy and energy through your song presentation, as well as demonstrate your most beautiful singing voice and breath control. On the day of the audition you will learn a short movement sequence- come prepared to give your best. Show us that you are willing to listen, learn, and most of all- enjoy your time to shine. It would be smart to review the characters and plot by viewing the animated movie or clips from the Broadway adaptation while you are preparing your audition. We can’t wait to see you on March 10th!

Disney’s Aladdin JR. is based on the 1992 Academy-Award®-winning film and the 2014 hit Broadway show about the “diamond in the rough” street rat who learns that his true worth lies deep within.

The story you know and love has been given the royal treatment! Aladdin and his three friends, Babkak, Omar, and Kassim, are down on their luck until Aladdin discovers a magic lamp and the who has the power to grant three wishes. Wanting to earn the respect of the princess, Jasmine, Aladdin embarks on an adventure that will test his will and his moral character. With expanded characters, new songs, and more thrills, this new adaptation of the beloved story will open up “a whole new world” for your young performers!

ALADDIN Aladdin, a poor street urchin, longs to make his mother proud, but sometimes loses his way. He’s the playful thief with a heart of gold, a prankster, and a romantic lead. Gender: Male Vocal range top: E4 Vocal range bottom: G2

BABKAK, OMAR, AND KASSIM Babkak, Omar, and Kassim are Aladdin’s three loyal and playful pals. Babkak is the Agrabahn foodie who loves to snack, kindhearted Omar has a sensitive soul, and stubborn Kassim yearns to be a leader. Gender: Both Vocal range top: E4 Vocal range bottom: G2

GENIE Genie is the fast-talking, fun-loving, scene- stealing wisecracker who lives in the lamp and yearns to be free. Genie should have great comic timing and a flashy and fun sense of showmanship. Gender: Both Vocal range top: D#4 Vocal range bottom: G2

IAGO is the fawning and funny and sarcastic sidekick to Jafar. Gender: Both Vocal range top: E4 Vocal range bottom: Bb2

ISIR, MANAL, AND RAJAH Isir, Manal, and Rajah, Jasmine’s devoted attendants, keep the Princess grounded with their honesty and openness. Isir, whose name means “inspiration,” is optimistic; Manal, “achievement,” is assertively encouraging; and Rajah, “hope,” is the most protective. 2 JAFAR Jafar is the power-hungry and crooked Grand . Jafar should bea strong actor who can sing and portray both sides of Jafar’s two-faced personality – loyal advisor to the Sultan and scheming villain – as well as pull off delicious comedic moments with his lackey, Iago. JASMINE Jasmine, the Princess of Agrabah, longs to experience the world outside the palace walls. Curious and assertive, she knows what she wants and craves the freedom to make her own choices. Jasmine is a singer who can portray both the romantic lead and a young woman caught between her responsibilities to her people and to herself. SULTAN Sultan, the warm-hearted ruler who dotes on his daugther, is committed to upholding the ancient laws of Agrabah. Gender: Male Vocal range top: C4 Vocal range bottom: Ab3

AGRABAHNS Agrabahns are the citizens of Agrabah who help to create the bustling marketplace – merchants, shoppers, beggars, guards, etc. Included in this ensemble are the following featured roles:  THE BEGGARS are a small group with whom Aladdin briefly interacts.  THE APPLE VENDOR is a merchant who reviles the beggars and from whom Jasmine unintentionally steals an apple.  THE FORTUNE TELLER unwittingly helps Aladdin escape the guards in “One Jump Ahead.”  THE SHOP OWNER is a marketplace vendor from whom Aladdin steals bread.  RAZOUL, the rough and commanding head of the palace guards, answers to Jafar.  THE GUARDS follow Razoul’s orders.

PRINCE ABDULLAH Prince Abdullah is one of Princess Jasmine’s haughty and arrogant suitors. Gender: Male

SPOOKY VOICE The mysterious Spooky Voice, conjured by Jafar, reveals the location of the lamp. This voice can be recorded, come from offstage, or with creative staging, come from an ensemble performer onstage.

CAVE OF WONDERS The Cave of Wonders is the ominous voice that instructs Aladdin to fetch only the lamp from the treasures within. This voice can be created in a variety of ways, much like the Spooky Voice.

ENSEMBLE Includes ATTENDANTS to Prince Abdullah, ENTOURAGE, and more.

3 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What if I have vacations/conflicts? A: We understand that conflicts will happen. Please bring any conflicts with you to auditions. If we are aware of conflicts in advance, we can be sure to plan around them. However, the weeks of May 20 and May 27 are mandatory and cannot be accommodated. Please keep open availability.

Q: Why do I have to pay? A: Registration fees are paid to the City of Westerville Parks and Recreation Department. The purpose of this show is to educate and to train. You are registering and paying a fee for a course offered through the Parks and Recreation Department. Registration fees include: Qualified instruction, all rehearsal materials, a t-shirt, two complimentary tickets to the performance of your choosing. Scholarships and payment plan options are available for those who require financial assistance.

Q: When are rehearsals? A: Rehearsals will begin for everyone APRIL 9. The breakdown is listed below. Please note: Rehearsal dates and times may shift due to availability of space and personnel. ● Rehearsals will take place 4 days a week, with days varying throughout the process. Please see the attached conflict calendar for exact rehearsal times. o All rehearsals will take place at the Westerville Senior Center and/or the Alum Creek Amphitheatre. o Please note that you should plan to be as available as possible for all rehearsals. However, you may not be called for all four nights of rehearsals. A final rehearsal schedule will be published shortly after casting and weekly updates will be announced. ● Beginning May 20 rehearsals will begin to take place 5 days a week. ● June 7 and June 8 o Please note that these days are scheduled as rain-out dates for the performances. In the event a regular performance must be canceled, the rain dates will be utilized. Please keep open availability for these dates. Q: Do I have to find my own costume? A: There is a working costume shop that will provide costumes. Cast and crew members are encouraged to volunteer. Shop hours will be posted once rehearsals begin. You may be asked to bring in basic items. These include: Undergarments, undershirts, socks and shoes.

Q: How can other members of my family or my friends get involved without being in the cast? A: We are always looking for volunteers to help with the following: ● Set building ● Costume construction ● Painting ● Ad sales and poster distribution ● Providing snacks and setting up meals ● Helping to look after kids during tech week, dress rehearsals, and performances
