II The Dale Warland Singers Twenty-three years of subscription concerts, tour and festival appearances, radio broadcasts and critically acclaimed recordings have given the Dale Warland Singers recognition as one of the world's foremost a cappella choral ensembles.

Based in /St. Paul, the Dale Warland Singers have earned a reputation for their commitment to commissioning and performing 20th-century choral music. This pioneering effort fosters a greater awareness and appreciation of contemporary choral literature and helps develop emerging and established composers, especially American composers. The Singers have helped keep the choral genre fresh and alive with new musical ideas by commissioning such composers as , , Carol Barnett, Mary Ellen Childs, Anthony Davis, Edwin London, George Shearing, Peter Schickele and Bernard Rands, among others. The Dale Warland Singers' New Choral Music Program commissions works from emerging composers. Through this program, commissions have been awarded to eight talented musicians, with a ninth to be awarded in 1996.Last year's call for scores yielded 146 submissions.

In 1992the Dale Warland Singers became the first-ever recipient of the Margaret Hillis Achievement Award for Choral Excellence. Their extraordinary efforts on behalf of composers and new music also resulted in back-to-back ASCAP Awards for Adventuresome Programming in 1992 and 1993.

Among the Singers' acclaimed recordings is their 1994release, Cathedral Classics, which critics from around the country called "An unmatched musical experience," "peerless," and "...one of the most astonishingly beautiful CDs." Another recording, December Stillness, has just been released. Other recordings include Fancie, A Rose in Winter, Christmas Echoes and Carols for Christmas as well as Americana: A Bit of Folk, Choral Currents, and many others.

Dale Warland Music Director and Conductor, The Dale Warland Singers The 1995-96concert season marks founder Dale Warland's twenty-fourth year as Music Director of the Dale Warland Singers. Warland has devoted his professional life to attaining the highest artistic level in choral singing. Consummate musicianship and attention to detail have been his tools in building one of the finest choral ensembles in the United States. Under Warland's leadership, the ensemble has thrilled choral music lovers, not just in its Twin Cities home, but throughout North America and Europe. Warland's outstanding achievements in the field of choral music were most recently recognized in June 1995,when he received the Michael Korn Founder's Award at the annual Chorus America Conference in Seattle. This award, which ranks as the "Grammy" of choral music in the United States, has previously been given to luminaries such as , Dominick Argento, Margaret Hillis and Roger Wagner.

Beyond his active schedule as Music Director of the Dale Warland Singers, Warland is in demand as guest conductor, lecturer and composer. He has served as co-chair of the choral and recording panels of the National Endowment for the Arts and has received major grants from the Ford Foundation, the Bush Foundation and the Minnesota State Arts Board.
