f1CS I THE DALE WARLAND SINGERS A professional choral ensem ble, The Dale Warland Singers was organized in 1972. Under the direction of Dr. Dale Warland, the Singers present a su bscription concert series each year in Minneapolis/St. Paul, as well as performing in other concert series throughout the state. Plans for the 1984-85 season include performances at Orchestra Hall, the new Ordway Music Theatre, as well as a two-week tour of Germany. Marking its thirteenth season in 1984-85, the ensemble hall an extensive repertoire of standard a cappella music representing a broad variety of styles. The Singers have also made significant contributions to the performance of twentieth century music through numerous performances of contemporary literature and the ensemble's involve- ment in world premiere performances and commissions of works by local composers Dominick Argento and Stephen Paulus, as well as Lukas Foss, William Schuman, and Danish composer Bo Holten. The Dale Warland Singers have appeared with the Saint Paul Cham ber Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, and are heard regularly on Minnesota Public Radio, National Public Radio, and American Public Radio broadcasts. In 1977 the ensemble toured Scandi navia at the request of both the Swedish and Norwegian governments, and during that tour made recordings for both Swedish and Norwegian Radio. The ensem ble has made ten recordings, including the very first digital recording of choral music. In the spring of 1984, the Singers began work on their eleventh recording, a recording of works by Dominick Argento. Stephen Paulus John Saw the Number Spiritual Dale Warland Dale Warland, Music Director of The Dale Warland Singers, is Professor of Music at Macalester College in St. Paul. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Olaf College, his Master of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota, and his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California. His academic honors include a Tanglewood scholarship, and a Ford Foundation grant which made possible a nine-month study of choral music in England, Sweden, and Norway. Under Warland's leadership, The Dale Warland Singers has received . extensive national and international acclaim. In addition to conducting many major performances by the Singers, he has prepared the ensemble for appearances with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Minnesota Opera, and the American Brass Quintet, ensembles led by such internationally-known conductors and artists as Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, Neville Marriner, Dennis Russell Davies, and Dave Brubeck. The Dale Warland Singers have also worked with guest conductors Robert Shaw, Norman Luboff, Eric Erickson, and Elmer Iseler. Warland has distinguished himself as a composer and arranger, and is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (AS CAP). Jenson Publications, Inc. publishes his choral music series. Warland was awarded an Individual Artist Grant by the Minnesota State Arts Board in 1981 to work with Robert Shaw, the music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. He guest-conducted the Swedish Radio Choir (Stockholm) in January 1981 and the Danish Radio Choir (Copenhagen) in January 1982. Currently a member ofthe Recording Panel of the National Endowment for the Arts, Warland has also served as co-chair of the NEA's Choral Panel. As the recipient of a Bush Foundation Award, he spent a month in England studying English choral literature during the summer of 1984.
