Bajo el amparo de una ley de inversiones extranjeras que eliminó las res- tricciones al giro de utilidades y un régimen de promoción industrial que esta- bleció una fuerte protección arancelaria y diversas ventajas impositivas, el gobierno desarrollista autorizó la instalación de 23 empresas para un mercado interno de reducidas proporciones. Aunque ello supuso un fuerte deterioro de las economías de escala que condicionaría a la industria al mercado interno durante las siguientes décadas, el complejo automotor impulsaría el crecimiento del con- junto del sector industrial durante los años sesenta1. No fue esa, sin embargo, la primera vez que la industria mereció la atención oficial. Ya a principios de la década de 1950 se plantearon medidas en esa dirección. Pero, aunque éstas se presentan a menudo como un antecedente de la ley de promoción de 1959, no han merecido el interés de los analistas porque se sostiene que no estaban entre las prioridades de la política industrial peronista. Este artículo analiza los orígenes de la industria automotriz durante la presi- dencia de Juan Perón (1946-1955).     When Ford and Chevy Were Argentine: The Great Era of Turismo de Carretera David M.K. Sheinin Trent University Abstract: This article focuses on Argentine car racing, and more specifically, the car racing class that from the 1930s through the early 1970s was the country’s most popular racing event, Turismo de Carretera (touring car racing or TC). For decades, TC drew thousands of fans on paved freeways, on closed speedways, and along rough-and-tumble dirt routes through cities, towns, and the countryside. In the performance, consumption, and narratives of TC, Argentines made U.S. car brands their own. American autos became Argentine. In part, this is an analysis of a culturally constructed hybridity, the Argentine-American car. But more than that, the paper argues that in the 1950s and 1960s, TC transformed quintessential U.S. brands and cultural markers into representations of Argentine daring and mechanical know-how. The central figures in that transformation were the legions of local mechanics who made American cars Argentine through their brilliance under the hood and sometimes, behind the wheel as well. There were 16 fine antique cars displayed on their large lake‐front lawn. This event was especially favored by sports cars owners, there were: three Morgans—including an early 1953 “Flat Radiator”, 1957 Fuel‐Injected Corvette, 1954 Kaiser Darrin, 365 Porsche Coupe, 1956 T‐Bird, MGB GT, & Mercedes SL. Everyone enjoyed excellent the food and wonderful car conversations. ‘64 Morgan Porsche 365 ’53 Morgan Mercedes SL FEATURE STORY: 1954 KAISER DARRIN When people in Hawaii think of “Kaiser”, most people think of the Kaiser Perminante health care system, or perhaps Henry J. Kaiser’s personal role in the creation of the Hawaii Kai community on east O’ahu in the 1950s. Students of American history will often find in their history books that Kaiser built ships during World War Two—nearly 1500 of them. And some more obscure Kaiser information includes his role in building the Hoover and Grand Coole dams and many important road projects. Unfortunately, today few people know that there was a Kaiser Motors, which along with Frazer, actually built cars, hundreds of thousands of them, but only a mere 435 beautiful Kaiser Darrins. Henry J. Kaiser would eventually build a personal business empire of more than 100 companies, but arguably his greatest “gift” was his organizational skills. He could create a new company out of nothing and quickly make it successful.
